I’ve been waiting on my Zegerid for almost 2 full weeks now. I had to appeal my Insurance Co. (big shocker!!) and I think I won but I am not holding my breath. In the meantime I am still dealing with solutabs and working 45 hrs per week. UGH!! Anyhoo, my GI offc said that they have SOME powder packs to give me but what they CAN do is keep me in supply with Zegerid pills if I can get a pharmacy to compound them. But isn’t that a BAD idea? Wouldn’t that be the same as trusting a pharm to compound a syrup or me making my own prilosec at home with OTC stuff and alka seltzer? I thought it sounded odd. Landen is eating so little now. I just cannot afford to screw up with meds. I’ll buy Zegerid out of pocket on Friday (payday) if Insurance doesn’t pull through. I just wanted your opinion on the pill compounding thing.

I miss you ladies during the week. I have all of these questions and no internet access at work. It sucks!!

zegerid is not a pill so I dont know what the pharmacist is even talking aobut

prilosec is a pill/capsule and is used with caracream to make a stable compound, but from my understanding, zegerid is a packet that you mix with water to make your own (stable) compound

prevacid comes in capsules as does nexium…

prevacid OTC I think is a tablet?

I didn’t think it came in a pill form. My GI’s secretary is the one that suggested that. (huge eyeroll) I know she was just trying to be helpful. But she is also the one that SWORE she gave Aetna ALL of the info they needed to get Zegerid approved, but then when I appealed them, they said they got TONS more info about his health from me and needed to hear the same things from my GI. I am faxing a sweet little letter over to GI now asking for them to please send another letter stating XYZ about Landen now. ugggghhhh. I am home today now with a baby who has an ear infection b/c I guess his reflux is so bad it’s going up into his ears. rambling now…I guess I should be posting in boo-hoo..

They do now have a pill form. I would still be concerned about having it compounded. It might be worth emailing Dr. Phillips because the pills have the sodium bicarb in them so maybe you could just mix them in water and give them. I don’t know I am just guessing but I think it would be worth finding out.

Laura, I cannot believe that illustration! What gives? Poor Landen. I guess I have to keep a close watch on his ears. And Landen is always always always upright, but his reflux is just insanely out of control right now, so it must be coming up really high and backing up into his ears. *sigh*

store brand is fine

just squirt at every diaper change (no suction, just let gravity do it’s thing)

I believe it helps clear out the ears…

I’m pretty sure that you can’t use the capsules for children. They can’t be broken open b/c they don’t contain enough buffer when used that way. Maybe your GI was talking about compounding prilosec to make it like zegerid. Good luck.

Wait! I have been sifting out the beads from his Prevacid packets because he

didn’t like the strawberry flavoring. Does that mean the flavoring has buffers

in it? i have been sifting for 30 minutes every morning for no reason?

So what is the concensus here?

I thought the beads were in bead (not powder) form due to the buffers.

Yes you can just use the beads (its the same as having the prevacid capsules and just opening them up and sprinkling them on apple sauce). Yes you can put the beads in apple juice. And yes it has to be on an empty stomach. The packets are really just designed to make it more palatable…mostly for the oldies! The strawberry stuff is not a buffer or compound. If you are sifting out the strawberry I’d ask the Dr for the capsules next time…save you some trouble. The other thing is to get a little tea strainer and strain the packets…the strawberry stuff will just sift through!. We used the packets for about 6 months so any questions just PM me.
