I have a compounded prevacid question for you guys. I am sure the answer is on here somewhere but for some reason I cannot find it!
We went to the GI today and I asked for Zegerid but was shot down Anyway, I did get him to write for the Prevacid compounded as we are having stomach pain/gas with the Solutabs. The compounding pharmacy is making it unflavored and in the 16.8% sodium bicarb, with a concentration of 3mg/ml….so I think that is all correct. My question is since we are getting it in the sodium bicarb, do we need to give it on an empty stomach and wait the 30 minutes like we did with the solutabs???? Thanks so much!
February 24, 2006 at 5:01 pm #2386AnonymousInactiveI think that is a yes. I think with any form of Prevacid you need to wait the 30 minutes. I hope someone else will chime in but I think it will also only be stable for maximum of 2 weeks, so you should have it refilled (or the prescription written) two weeks at a time.
There is information somewhere here regarding that, so hopefully someone will chime in.
Good luck!!

I will mention though that Isaac had stomach issues with 2 forms of prevacid (solutab and powder packs). I know that people keep saying that compounds are only good for 2 weeks but we have never found that the medicine has stopped working. We have been using it for months now and LOVE it!
February 24, 2006 at 6:07 pm #2401AnonymousInactiveHi there –
Owen has been on compounded prevacid for a year now and it has been GREAT. With the compounded you don’t have to wait for 30 minutes – something about the sodium bicarb turns on the proton pumps so the food doesn’t matter. You can tell I’m not a pharmacist but I know there is a chemical reason why you don’t have to wait with the compound.
We’ve also heard over and over again that it needs to be refilled after two weeks, but we have never had a problem. The pharmacy DOES tell us that it expires after a month so we get it refilled right on time and it always works great. We actually tried packets for a few days this summer because Owen wasn’t liking the taste of the compound and it was a DISASTER. I have been in love with the compound ever since.
Good luck!!
February 24, 2006 at 6:11 pm #2404AnonymousInactiveOkay,
I just got off of the phone with the compounding pharmacist and she said that the flavorings that they use are not acidic…they are basic… and that they have never had a problem with anyone coming back and saying that the med was ineffective after 2 weeks. So, to flavor or not to flavor??? what do you think?
February 24, 2006 at 9:05 pm #2418AnonymousInactiveWe don’t flavor. I’ve heard that the flavoring is what can really effect the stability of the med but I don’t have any experience with it. I do know that we haven’t and have always had good luck with the med – and that while Owen went through a short phase of not liking it, he now sucks it down. I guess I’d lean toward not flavoring, just because it’s worked for us, but it can’t hurt to try either.
February 25, 2006 at 1:53 am #2437AnonymousInactiveI have to disagree. I too at 1st never saw a problem with the meds losing its stability. I thought that Ashtyn was always doing so well. Then one time on day 18, it was like she had no medicine. Same for day 19, 20, 21. Then I figured it out. I still had some Prevacid capsules & the compounding pharmacist agreed to make me a 2 week supply at a time & just charge me the one copay. Ashtyn did SOOOOOO much better with having it refilled every 2 weeks. I always thought that the days she had problems were just “problem days”. Now that I looked back, it was always those days were the days at the last week & a half or so of a 1 month supply. WHen we changed it to 2 week refills, my dd even seemed better & people never knew she had reflux while on meds.
Unfortunately, my dd is still on Prevacid (solutabs now) & she is 27 months old. But, that is a whole other story………..
February 25, 2006 at 9:34 am #2446hellbenntKeymasterI believe it’s better to be safe than sorry…I’d just ask them to humour you and get it done every 2 weeks & I’d get the flavoring seperately, again just tell them to humour you-I’ve read entirely too much from posters here, like sherry, about there being problems with stability…(that’s how I ‘found’ caracream, but that’s a moot (sp?), bcse you can’t even get it anymore-more about it from my welcome/intro)
February 25, 2006 at 11:30 am #2462AnonymousInactiveWe have a sweetener added to ours. We only go to this certain pharmacy to have it mixed. We have 3 other babies at the that pharmacy that use the same compound as Isaac and they all love it too! I have never noticed any difference in day 1-30 but if you are really worried you may want to start at 2 weeks and then decide later if you should move to a 4 weeks.
Laura, Great info on why this can be given on full or empty stomach! Thank you!
