InactiveI posted recently about having a little difficulty with Alana and solids. Well it has definately turned around and she is now swallowing and really enjoying them (I am to because no longer any of those runny greeny poo that those of you who have been on the semi-elemental formulas know all about
).These are not really reflux questions but I don’t know a lot of other mums and Alana is oldest in my mums group. But I was just wondering, how many times a day should you give the solids. They say start with once, but Alana is now getting them twice a day (breakfast and lunch) and really enjoying them. We haven’t seen any noticable decrease in her bottles- still taking 30-35 ounces a day- although she had got up to 40 prior to solids. Wondering if I should add a third meal. Or maybe decrease the amount in her bottles and then offer solids straight away (i usually wait 20 mintues after her bottle so I don’t stuff her like a goose).
We are only doing veges and fruits (I am reluctant to do cereals after she had a bad reaction to rice when we first started). It is getting hard because I buy my baby food (I am the absolute worse cook in the world- I tried to puree apple and burnt the pot) and so many have milk or cereal. We have tried some oatmeal today so I will see how the bowels respond to that. I was wondering if it was to early to give her the baby food that is mixed veges and chicken (we have done mixed veges with no probs)?
I feel like such a novice

InactiveI’m glad to hear she’s enjoying her solids. That’s great. I’d say if she’s still drinking that much then if would be fine to give her solids three times a day.
I’m not sure if you have the same brands of baby food as we do, but in the US all stage one foods are one ingredient only so they should be safe (free of dairy or cereals) and most of the stage 2 fruits and veggies have no cereal or dairy either. I’m not sure about the meat ones, though. I think the chicken would be fine. I was giving Myles broccoli with chicken at that age. It was his favorite baby food but Gerber discontinued it so now I have to puree my own.
Generally you should start with single ingredient foods and try one food for several days before introducing another new food so you can see if there is a reaction.
I hope she does well with the oatmeal.

InactiveThat’s so great that she enjoys her solids.
It’s always fun to try new foods with them.
I usually gave my babies solids at our mealtimes (so 3 times a day) at that age. I didn’t start any protein foods (meats, egg yolks, yogurt) until 9 months. Good luck with the oatmeal. My kids always liked that better than rice & did well with it. It sounds to me like Alana is ready for that third meal, and I’m sure as she increases her solid intake she’ll slowly start to decrease her formula intake.

InactiveWell I gave Alana the oatmeal this morning for b’fast and now about 12 hours later, very smelly mucousy stools. Hmm maybe I should lay of it and see if the stools get better.
A lot of our foods do have two together- and with the veges and fruit I haven’t had much trouble (i tried apple and pear on their own- pretty much the only single food tins you can get, with no probs so when added mixes I knew if any reaction it would be the new ingredient). It has really been the grains.
Could it be just getting used to it and if I kept going for a few days it might resolve?
Should I worry about iron- thats why they push the cereals here?

InactiveI’d ask about the iron, but I think if she’s drinking that much formula she’s probably getting enough. Part of the reason they fortify infant cereals is that generally babies begin to take less formula when the begin eating grains, so it’s to make up for that.
I don’t know enough about food intolerances to give any advice about sticking with the oatmeal or not. Hopefully some of the moms who’ve dealt with intolerances and/or knows more can lead you in the right direction.

Inactiveohh she might not tolerate wheat well.. i have to give shane the oatmeal that doesnt have wheat, its an organic brand and its the only one i can find that says wheat free. also we give shane 3 meals a day as well. something easy to make for her would be bananas and other soft fruits in the blender so you wouldnt have to cook them before hand. and just add a bit of formula or water to it. its really easy, if you’d like to give something not in the jars. but shane gets a lot of jarred babyfood as well, and we do almost everything in stage 2’s except strawberries and corn. i think everything else should be fine.
thats great that she loves it! i hope u dont have any other issues.

InactiveIf you guys have the same baby foods as we do here, my Dr. told me the stage two meat + veggies were fine at 6 months. He also told me he wouldn’t wish them on his worse enemy and not to be surprised if Brianna didn’t like them.
He was right. We feed Brianna three times a day around that same time. I waited about 30 min after a nursing for each meal, except at night..the nursing came last. I think Alana would do great on the third meal. Good luck!January 25, 2007 at 7:14 pm #23121Anonymous
InactiveThanks everyone, I think I might leave grains for awhile and try the stage two (dairy and grain free of course
). Its funny because she really didn’t want to eat the oatmeal, but gobbles down others- maybe she is trying to tell me something. Also, I will try the blender thing- thanks Lauren. Interestingly Alana had a corn/pumkin mix with no probs- she loved it. We did the three meals yesterday

InactiveHi Therese! I agree with what the other moms have said. I’d say she’s ready for the third meal!
The thing that stinks about babies is that once you get used to what they’re eating/doing…it all changes! Just when I figured out how much formula to give Sarah so she would be content, we switched to solids. Now that I am slowly figuring out how much of that to give…it’s time for finger foods! Does it ever end???
It’s all such a guessing game! It’s hard for me to imagine that in a few short months we will be trying to move completely away from the bottle and relying soley on sippy cup and solids. Eeeeek! The start of another journey!
Good luck!

InactiveAmy- don’t get me started on the sippy cup
. I think a 100 different people have told me a 1000 different things!!!!!It is a pretty scary journey- seemed so much easier when all I had to worry about was formula!
