InactiveHi All. DS got put on prevacid yesterday. The doctor ordered it in granule form (I’m assuming) because over the phone she told me I would sprinkle it in a little bit of his formula and give it to him that way. Well when I went to the pharmacist he told me that it would be way too difficult to break open the capsule and figure out how to give him half of it at a time. He told me he had to compound it and that is what he does with all pediatric doses. So I get it compounded, come home and do some research, and find out that it isn’t even recommended to get it compounded. The pharmacist did not flavor it with anything so I know that is better but I also found out that it will most likely lose its effectiveness after 2 weeks! So now I have this whole bottle of compounded prevacid. To make matters worse, I tried to give it to DS this morning and he absolutely hated the taste and didn’t swallow any of it. I ended up squirting it into a little bit of formula and giving it to him that way just to get it in him. So much for waiting 20 minutes before eating! Does anyone have experience with giving prevacid this way? I’m concerned it isn’t even going to do anything for him. Not sure if I should call my doc and ask her to call in another script for it or what. Help! Thanks.

KeymasterHi & welcome. I’m sorry you’re dealing w/ BOTH a doctor AND a pharmacist who are not helping you! First of all, your Dr was wrong telling you to put the med in formula. Then the pharmacist was ‘wrong’ about the compound.
I ‘need’ you to please go to the Introduction Forum & read ‘groupie intro’ & refer back to it often. From there, please find the link to ‘prevacid 101’ and please read through this. Also, from groupie intro, please read the link to finding a Ped GI near you. Sorry to be so ‘bossy,’ but I am away from my computer…

InactiveWe used a compound and it was terrible for us. Didn’t work b/c they weren’t making it correctly. Check out Laura’s intro to find the link about how meds should be compounded… I can’t remember the details anymore. But I think that each dose needs to be at least 3.5mls in order to have enough buffer, and I can’t remember the amount of sodium bicarb needed to make it work. If it’s not made correctly tha it won’t work. In a compound, you don’t need to wait if it’s made correctly, but typically they’re not. I’d ask the pharmacist for how he made it, including a printout of all the ingredients and amounts. If you can’t get him/her to make it correctly, then maybe you can try prevacid in buffer babies. We used caracream, which is the older version, and it worked well for us. It’s a way to compound the prevacid at home so it’s made correctly. Check out http://www.marci-kids.com for more details.
