Riley started Prevacid two days ago, 15MG solutabs once a day. I am splitting it in two and giving it twice a day. Here is my question, why do I have to wait 30 minutes to feed him after giving the meds? He is a silent refluxer, so he will not throw up. This is the only site that says wait 30 minutes before feeding. The instructions on meds. just says to give on an empty stomach. Any advice?

Joel explains it much better than I can, but basically the medication needs to be absorbed on an empty stomach and then eating a meal will turn on the acid producing pumps so that the medication can shut them down. The bigger the meal, the more pumps are turned on and thus shut down.

It has to do with the medicine being able to start working on the stomach acid. If there is food involved the medicine can’t work as effectively on the stomach acid… that is the short simple explaination. HTH.

Thanks for the information!! He started it on Monday and it kicked in today!!! Yeah!! He is like a new baby!! Hopefully this wasn’t just a good day!
