My DS has reflux as a result of MFPI/FPIES. I think his meds need to be adjusted, but for about the last month he has had a rash on his chin and around his mouth and also has a foul odor coming from his nose and mouth. We’ve ruled out a sinus infection and any other type of infection. The rash he typically gets when he’s reacting to a food, but we’ve gone back to our baseline of the diet for over a month now and the rash won’t clear up. My theory on the rash is that when his reflux flares up it makes his saliva acid and with all the drool it irritates his skin. Would that make sense?
Has anyone else’s baby had a rash caused by reflux? Fould odor from the mouth and nose from reflux??Thanks,ValerieDecember 3, 2009 at 10:45 pm #64893AnonymousInactiveI don’t know about the rash/odor but your reasoning definitely makes sense…
I just wanted to say ‘hi’ b/c my ds (Evan) is around your ds’s age (Evan is 18 mths old) & only tolerates about 10 or so foods well… so I can certainly relate to your situation.

Dh & I just read some more info on it (after seeing your signature) & it sounds EXACTLY like him/his symptoms (reactions all GI related, no skin or respiratory; intolerant to low-allergen foods: chicken, turkey, oatmeal, pears, etc; growth issues). Anyway, who diagnosed your ds? We see ped GI, general ped, allergist & dietician & no one has mentioned this ever… does it change anything (treatment wise) to have this diagnosis?!
We actually have his 18 mth general ped appt tomorrow so I will mention it but we’ll see. Okay, sorry for taking over your post (I probably should have just PM’ed you).

They are basically the same thing really…they both cause inflammation of the stomach and gut when an offending food is eaten. I think alot of dr’s aren’t familiar with FPIES so they just stick to the MFPI diagnosis. Really the treatment is the same…avoid offending foods! However, the one key thing that my allergy dr. told us was that should he have a severe reaction to something (even those it’s not an IgE allergy, he can still have a severe enough inflammation to cause him to go into shock) that FPIES does not respond to an epi pen or benedryl….they must get steroids to stop the reaction. That’s only for severe, severe reactions where the kid is lethargic and shocky. She gave us a letter to carry with us at all times just in case he has to go to the ER for a reaction.
We are in the process of doing PATCH testing for his intolerances right now. We know for sure he had a really bad reaction to chicken and eggs with that.December 4, 2009 at 7:41 am #64897hellbenntKeymastererin: you’re not hijacking bcse it’s info that is helpful to others
valerie: have you posted about doctors w/ whom you’ve had good (& bad!) experiences? if so: thank you! if not, here are the links:
Looking for a Ped GI:

Thanks so much for the info… That’s really interesting (& scary) about the shock thing-eek! My 1st ds has peanut/treenut allergy so I’m well aware of the epipen thing but didn’t think we would need it for Evan (& obviously we don’t – but there’s still a significant risk).
I will talk w/ his dietician re: FPIES @ his next appt – he’s the specialist that I usually get the most discussion with (if that makes sense). He’s really great.
We just finished our last round of PATCH testing w/ Evan. Nothing showed up for him for blood or skin prick… but for PATCH he was positive for: milk, soy, wheat/gluten, turkey, chicken, pear, prune, cocoa, & borderline corn & borderline gluten-free oatmeal.
January 9, 2010 at 2:33 pm #65420AnonymousInactivesylvia had thrush and she ended up with a rash around her mouth and running down her neck—(and eventually spreading to other places on her body while my son was taking care of her because i was at the hospital with one of my other kids.) the thrush in her mouth appeared to be gone—but it moved to her esophagus. just something you might consider.

omelet. Keep a food diary to see if a certain food group or ingredient
might trigger your problem. Also, emotional stress can sometimes wreak
havoc on the digestive system. All things to consider. If it keeps up,
see your doctor.
