Seth had a bad reflux episode last night- he woke up about 3:30 crying out and when we went in his room, we could smell pee so we thought maybe that was the problem and put him on his changing table to change his diaper. Well, he started screaming and arching and we could hear him refluxing. It was just like when he was a newborn and first diagnosed.
I am just wondering why he is having such a hard time again when he is 13.5 months old. I hate to see the reflux act up, but at least I know now we definitely need to keep him on the Prevacid which brings me to my next thing- I have noticed him lately chewing his solutabs so I am thinking maybe they are not working if he is breaking up the granules before he even swallows them.
Also, we started rice milk in the sippy this week. He is taking about 3-4 oz. once a day. Could this cause a reflux flare-up? I do think the rice milk is causing him gas but he is passing it easily and it is not bothering him like gas sometimes does.
Any advice?
February 15, 2006 at 9:48 am #1545AnonymousInactiveChewing the Solutabs will definitely make them less effective. They contain little enteric coated granules and if the coating on these is compromised by being crushed or broken, then the drug is left unprotected and will be degraded by the stomach acid. Have you tried giving the capsules in applesauce? Zegerid would obviously be the best option.
February 15, 2006 at 9:59 am #1546AnonymousInactiveThanks Joel, we have tried the capsules- they worked fine but he is going through an independent stage where he does not like to be spoon fed so that is why we switched to the solutabs. We still have some leftover capsules though and we may have to try them again. I am hoping we are almost done with the reflux journey so I do not want to switch to Zegerid this late in the game but if we were just starting out (God forbid), I would definitely consider it!

If it’s not the medicine, do you think it could be the rice milk? Owen had a HUGE cup of rice milk the other night before bed and he was up from 9:30 – 11pm just screaming his head off, and had the worst gas ever. I was thinking that it had to be something that he had eaten at daycare but after finding out he didn’t eat anything new, I think that it could have been the rice milk. He’s been having it for a while though, but I don’t know what else it could have been. But I know that whenever I tell his GI doc that he’s been refluxing they ALWAYS think it’s a reaction to something that he’s intolerant to more than anything else.
Did he eat anything else new yesterday? Is he teething? Could he be getting a cold? I don’t know – I’m trying to think of the list of possibilities that we go through whenever Owen has those types of episodes. If it makes you feel any better, he spit up all over himself this morning after I got him dressed – he hasn’t done that in months!
February 15, 2006 at 12:52 pm #1559AnonymousInactiveHi Laura, sorry to hear Owen’s had a rough time too. It has to be the rice milk giving Seth the gas since it is the only new thing he has had. I hope it is not causing the reflux- he really likes it and it is a good source of calcium for him. I think I will try making sure he gets the Prevacid in some form or another and then if the reflux continues, I’ll know it is the rice milk. I shouldn’t care what they think but I hate to tell the daycare to quit giving the rice milk to him if I just suspect it- they already think I am nuts! Mom2Seth2006-2-15 12:53:43
February 15, 2006 at 5:55 pm #1607hellbenntKeymasterhas anyone tried potato milk? there used to be a mom on here who had her toddler on it…I’m just a curious bystander…
February 16, 2006 at 8:35 am #1647AnonymousInactiveI don’t think I’ve ever even heard of potato milk, other than your mentioning it, Laura. Is it in the same area as rice and soy milk? I’d imagine it must be found at Whole Foods, right?
February 16, 2006 at 2:31 pm #1691AnonymousInactiveI’ve never seen potato milk in a store, only online. I do remember someone on the board too whose child did poorly on rice milk but thrived on potato milk. I believe the caloric/fat content is about the same.
February 16, 2006 at 4:51 pm #1706hellbenntKeymasterhere’s a link fora canadian brand potato milk; http://www.tayofoods.com/win/flash/index.html
February 16, 2006 at 5:21 pm #1714AnonymousInactiveI think Vann’s makes the one that we were trying. We couldn’t get Dylan to change because he was so used to the rice milk, but he doesn’t drink that much of it anymore anyway. I think you can order vann’s on line as well..
February 16, 2006 at 8:35 pm #1724AnonymousInactivewhat does potato milk taste like?—-i keep imagining that starchy flavor of a raw potato. (blech)
February 16, 2006 at 8:57 pm #1727hellbenntKeymasterI read that its sweet like rice milk…picture boiled potato rather than raw,lol

February 17, 2006 at 6:43 am #1742AnonymousInactiveI never tasted it, but it’s really tricky to mix. You have to get just the right consistancy or it is just bad. The Vanns comes in a powder and you have to mix it yourself, but in the long run, it was far cheaper than the rice milk we were purchasing. We just couldn’t get it right. Let’s just say I am not the most domesticated mom in the neighborhood
February 25, 2006 at 9:06 pm #2493AnonymousInactiveI just wanted to update that since I posted, I have been giving Seth his solutabs on a spoon with just a tad of water. This way, they are partly dissolving when he gets them and he can’t chew them. It seems to be helping- I don’t hear him refluxing as much and his night wakings have also improved- he even slept through the night a couple of times this week. He has not done this in months!! I really think him chewing the solutabs was a big part of our problem.
February 25, 2006 at 11:32 pm #2509AnonymousInactiveHi Tiffany,
Here’s an idea, don’t know if it would work. Michael is on the capsules and they work great. I saw in target basically plastic dipping sticks on handles. I think gerber makes them. Maybe try dipping them in the sauce then the capsule beads and then letting seth eat it on his own. He might be into them since it would be new and he could “do it himself” Like I said just a brainstorming idea, I have never tried it. Hope he is feeling better soon!
