Hi there–
I was on the forum with DS #1…now I have DS#2 (5 weeks) and I’m wondering if he has reflux or MSPI.
This time around I have an overactive letdown. He is EBF. For the past
couple of weeks his stools are still yellow, but very mucus-y. He is
more fussy every day–lot’s of gas. Some spitting, but not a huge
amount. He only sleeps well when carried in the moby wrap or other carrier. During the night he sleeps on DH or me.
He’s also had a stuffy nose since birth.I started the dairy/soy free diet 2 days ago.
What do you think? I’m so paranoid b/c of my experience with DS #1!

I haven’t been noticing if the gas is stinky or not…I forgot about that.
Question: what if there’s mucus but no stinky gas? Would that still indicate food intolerance…or what else could it indicate?
I did TED for months with DS #1 with no success. I’m reeeeally hoping that the milk/soy will take care of this one 🙂
What did work for Finn (DS #1) was an HCl supplement and then a surgery for inguinal hernia– but as I mentioned above–Bodhi is different–seems less severe.January 23, 2011 at 6:45 pm #67708hellbenntKeymastercopied from ‘erin’s sticky’ link above:
The key to your diet & exclusively breastfed babies is that if she is having stinky gas, then she is reacting so something in your diet. If she isn’t having stinky gas, then she isn’t.
Where it gets tricky is that it’s very possible to not have stinky gas (so you’re on the right diet) but to continue having mucous &/or blood in the stool. It takes a while for the LOs colons to heal (fwiw, it took my 2nd ds 6 wks of TED & no stinky gas before the blood & mucous stopped). So… I would track the stinky gas. I would also go back on TED. While tracking stinky gas, I would wait until 4-5 days of no stinky gas, then call that your ‘baseline’. Then, continue that diet until the blood & mucous goes away. Then, your db has baselined. Then, you can consider adding something to your diet. If after you start TED again after 4-5 days she’s still having stinky gas then she’s reacting to something in the TED & you’ll need to adjust (my dss reacted to 3-4 things in TED)… but don’t worry about that yet- we’ll deal w/ that if we need to.
January 26, 2011 at 3:18 pm #67726AnonymousInactiveI did see this, but I’m a little confused– what if there was never any stinky gas, but lots of mucus? What would mucus alone indicate?
January 27, 2011 at 4:48 pm #67735AnonymousInactiveMy LO never had any stinky gas (he had lots of gas but never stinky) but he did have mucuous and nasal congestion from the get go…then at 7 wks old he started having green stools with even more mucous and blood. That’s when I started eliminating dairy and soy, with little improvement. Finally I ended up doing TED and after about 4 wks (seriously!) he was finally having yellow mucous free/blood free diapers. His diapers are still fairly runny though, I don’t remember my other two being that way. In any event, I’ve been able to determine he was reacting to dairy/soy/eggs/tomatoes.
Funny enough he just started having “stinky gas” the other day (he is now 6 months old) and I remembered Erin’s post about it so now I’ve been looking over anything new in my diet to see what could be bothering him, if anything? His diapers are still fine though, so I’m definitely less stressed trying to figure the culprit out this time!
Anyway, I would try continuning with your elimination diet and see if it helps. It may take some time to get rid of the mucous.February 3, 2011 at 12:26 am #67759AnonymousInactiveSo I went to the doctor the other day and she didn’t know much about infant reflux or mucus in stools– but I did get her to do a hemoccult test of his mucus-y stool– and there were no traces of blood.
Does no blood= no intolerance? Or can you have intolerance without blood in stool? He’s still thrashing around at night and definitely has gas pain and some reflux. Sleeping is the biggest issue. I’m still on MSPI diet but I’m wondering if it’s worth trying TED :(. … I’m really needing sleep.
Thank you!February 3, 2011 at 6:22 pm #67763AnonymousInactiveOh my goodness I completely forgot about the thrasing around at night until you said it!!! My LO thrashed around so much it was crazy! I’m guessing it was all that painful gas he had. I think it’s definitely good news that there was no blood in your LO’s stools. How long have you been MSPI free? I can’t remember. It may be that you’re seeing an improvement but still need to give it more time? My guy had mucuousy diapers for about a month after I started my elimination diet. The blood went away fairly quickly but the mucuous took forever!! I think it takes time for their gut to heal, YKWIM? I guess it doesn’t hurt to try TED but maybe wait it out a little longer with MSPI to see if the mucous improves?
February 4, 2011 at 1:55 pm #67770hellbenntKeymastertry meds, too?
you can always try to ‘back off’ meds later on… -
