Inactivei have heard that putting rice cereal in with the formula can help with the reflux. anyone tried it and found it to work?
my husband really wants to try it with our daughter but she’s only 3 1/2 weeks old and i’m afraid that it’s to early to start giving her rice cereal.

InactiveOur dr told me to start Aidan on cereal at 2 months, I started him on rice but ended up on oatmeal b/c the rice was constipating. He had a LOT in his bottle, 3 tbs per 4 oz, others only do things like 1 tsp per ounce. Just depends.

Inactivewe did 1 tsp per ounce at 2 mos. as well and it worked well.. you may have to do oatmeal as well… but we were fine w/rice.

InactiveThis is just an opinion and I really don’t want to upset anyone
, but rice cereal is a food. They don’t recommend it to 6 months in aus. Peads will not reccomend rice cereal to thicken formula/milk in Aus. I read on the boards that many have success with it though?December 3, 2006 at 8:46 pm #19474hellbennt
Keymasterthere are those who swear it helps. there are others who tried it and then stopped because they didn’t see a difference & didn’t want their babies on cereal so early. there are still others who never wanted to try it…
from the ‘introduce yourself’ forum there is a sticky (top post) called ‘Groupie Intro’
from there, look at the ‘section’ about what to feed your GERDling- & there’s a ‘section’ about the different formulas-there is information there so you can make your own educated decision…

Inactivewhat formula is she on? if she is on regular milk based, you can try enfamil AR, it has the rice starch added to it. we did that until 2 mos. old, when i felt more comfortable adding the rice cereal to the bottle, and wanted to change to goodstart anyhow. So, you can always try that one instead, i think its a bit gentler than adding the cereal.

InactiveWhen I was a nanny I learned that MANY babies (with or without reflux) became constipated immediately after starting rice cereal. For that reason I started all of my babies on Oatmeal. I’m sure some babies do fine on Rice cereal but I do think 3-4 weeks is awfully young.
Is she choking on her feeds? Or does your dh want to try the rice to help her keep her food down because she’s spitting up? Is she in pain? On any meds?

InactiveI also wasn’t really comfortable trying cereal at a young age (we started at 3 or 4 months I think), but we tried it in desperation. I did notice that the times I didn’t add cereal the amount he spit up would be HUGE. So I definitely think the thicker milk helped a little with Bryce. We would alternate each bottle with rice & oatmeal.

Inactiveshe’s on prevacid 15mg and nutragenmin (sp?) and after talking to friends with reflux babies they suggested the rice cereal so i was looking for more info. i think 3 weeks is way to young to start it so i’ll wait and talk to the doc at her 2 month appt. we are just looking for anything to help her feel better. this is our first child and we hate to see her cry and in pain. today she started crying while she was eating which is new for her. usually she starts crying about 20-30 minutes after a bottle. EVERY feeding she would take about 1oz then start screaming and spit the bottle out. if she keeps this up tomorrow i’m going to call the doc AGAIN.

InactiveIt is really hard to see them cry and in pain
, so it is very understandable that you would want to try everything
. The first few weeks when I was waiting for someone to tell me what was wrong with my baby were absolutely terrible. But she is so much better now. Hang in there, I am sure you will find she gets better, you are already making a good start with the meds and the special formula
.Who diagnosed the reflux and prescribed the meds- was it your GP or a specialist? How long as she been on the prevacid? If it is only a few days you might need to wait a little longer for a positive effect. How are you giving it to her- 1 dose or 2 or 3. Are you timing it around meals. I would definately give them a call if your baby has been on the meds for a few days (say 10-14) with no improvement.
You could try some mylanta when she is feeling really bad?.I used this for a little while when I was waiting for the meds to kick in. I have read some people give it just before a feed to stop the acid a bit. Some people also use Zantac whilst they are waiting for the prevacid to work- as youcan see from my signature, Alana is still on both (Zoton is prevacid in Aus).
Above all, know you are doing the best you can. Give your babe lots of support, love and hugs when they are feeling bad and know that whilst it is awful for both of you, this time together is cementing a loving and caring relationship- your baby will know you can be relied upon for comfort when they aren’t feeling well.

Inactive15 mg may not be enough to stop the acid and make her comfortable. Here’s a website with some current research that shows infants need higher doses of PPI meds than adults because their metabolism is so fast that they eliminate the drug from their systems 3-4 times faster than adults. http://www.marci-kids.com
Myles was on 15 mg for weeks and he continued to be miserable. It wasn’t until I finally convinced his doc to raise his dose to marci-kids standards that he finally improved. I printed and faxed the marci-kids info to her and that’s what finally swayed her. Once he was on the right dose it really was like night and day…he was a new baby.

Crying during feeds is a classic sign of reflux so I’d definitely try to get her Prevacid dose increased.

InactiveAidan was on 15 mgs for 2 weeks with no improvement then he was upped to 30, that was when he was about 3 months old. The cereal REALLY helped him, he ate a lot less than most babies his age, (the cereal filled him up) but there was deff. an improvement!

InactiveWe started rice with Kaelyn at 3 weeks. She needed 1 Tbsp of rice for each ounce of formula. It made a huge difference for her. It was somewhat constipating. We ended up switching to oatmeal.
I’ve read some articles that link early introduction of cereal to food allergies. So… I’ve refused to introduce cereal to Alexandra. With all of Kaelyn’s food allergies, Alex has an increased chance of having them, so I don’t want to do anything to up those chances.

InactiveWe started at 2 months thickening with 1 tsp per 1 oz formula. We were just told by GI doc to go up to 1 tbsp for every 2 oz. It does seem to help. But your ped should tell you if its ok or not. Probally a little young.

Inactivewell after 2 days of her crying WHILE she was eating, i called the doc. they said to try 1/2 a teaspoon of rice cereal per oz. so she just had her first “serving” at lunch and so far so good. she took the whole 3 oz w/o having a fit or spitting the bottle out. and shes had much less spitup this time. hopefully this will be the breakthrough we have been looking for.
