Inactiveas I’d hoped. Today is Day 7 and while there has been some improvement it seems to be slipping some.
The first 2-3 days I noticed a big change. Truman seemed a lot less fussy during the day and I was able to really stretch out his Zantac doses. He slept a little bit better, but not huge strides there. But I kept telling myself there was still time.
But the last 3 days or so it seems like the daytime fussiness has returned and I’m having to really keep on top of it with the Zantac. I stagger the Zegerid and Zantac–at least 2 hours apart from each other–giving each 3x day. At night its a bit better and he is still sleeping better (waking every 2-3 sometimes even 4! hours, as opposed to every 1-2 like before).

I’m really worried about the return of the daytime fussiness though, the arching of the back and crying, pulling on and off the breast repeatedly.
Tell me it will get better. I know I’m supposed to give it 2 weeks but it concerns me that it seemed to get better and then it regressed a little bit.

InactiveSaucy,
It would make it easier for the rest of us if you filled in your signature with info about your baby’s age, symptom history, medications, etc… With so many folks coming and going, it can get hard to keep track of it all.
I agree with Laura that things should get much better after a couple of weeks if he is on the right dose. Remind me his age/weight/dose.

InactiveSorry Joel, just updated my signature.

He is currently taking Zegerid 3x day 10 mg. He is probably close to 19 lbs by now. He will be 4 mos next Friday.

InactiveAt the higher end of what Dr Phillips recommends for that age/weight, he would get about 14 mg of Zegerid, given in three doses, for a total of 42 mg per day. But for now, I would give it 2 weeks at the current dose level and see if things improve. If they don’t you could see if you could up the dose a little.

InactiveGive it at least a month. After 2 weeks you should notice a definite improvement. Slowly, but surely it will get better and better. With Haden, during those first couple of weeks we would still see some break thru acid attacks but after some time his esphogeous healed and he was no longer in pain. It happens, slowly.
You have to remember Truman probably has some irritation in his esphogeous that still causes him pain/discomfort. This too will heal over time.
Hang in there!

InactiveOh I hope you are right because since I’ve written, its only gotten worse. The last two nights he’s been up all night. Last night he woke EVERY SINGLE HOUR starting at 1 AM. I am miserable and tired of being used as a pacifier all night.

I just don’t understand how he could still be in pain between the zantac and the zegerid. I don’t give them any closer together than 2 hours and I’m giving as I always have–with an oral syringe.
I feel like the light I saw at the end of the tunnel in the first few days of zegerid has completely burnt out.
but its only Day 10 so I shall try to remain hopeful.

InactiveI think I’ve seen several times on this board that PPIs and Zantac should be given four hours apart or they cancel each other out. You may want to ask Joel about that…

InactiveWow! I didn’t know that. If that’s the case, that would explain a lot wouldn’t it?
I will definitely try that then! Thanks for telling me!

Would anyone else like to confirm?

InactiveI think I read that in Laura’s intro, as well.

Keymasterjonah’s ped GI said 2 hours apart is fine, & that’s what we did w/o any problems, but others have posted that their ped GIs have told them 4 hrs or 5 hrs apart…

InactiveI just had to post an update and let you know that Truman is doing MUCH better. He’s sleeping in at least one block of 4-6 hours (which heretofore was unheard of!) and then every 2-3. So a huge improvement! Also he’s a much happier baby during the day. So Yippeee!! Yay for Zegerid. It just took the full two weeks.
Also, I don’t know if it’s coincidence in timing or what but Day 12 is about when I found out that you were supposed to space out the Zegerid and Zantac 4 hours, so I have done that ever since and gotten good results. And also on that same day, I bumped up his dosage from 30mg to 35mg (using one packet of 20mg and less than half a packet of the 40 mg). It was my first time leaving him with someone and I was afraid that his reflux might act up so I gave him the larger dose. And that was the first night he slept for 6 hours, and then another 4!
So I don’t know what it was, waiting the 2 weeks, spacing the Zantac farther out or upping his dose a tiny bit but its working and I’m thrilled!
Thanks so much for everyone’s support! Oh and we just saw the ped today and he weighs 19lbs 4 oz so I think I will recalculate the dosage and see where we are.

InactiveYea!!! Once Zegerid kicks in, it kicks butt!!! Oh how great that sleep must have felt – both for you and for Truman.
Hope it keeps going well for you!!
