Inactivemy dd is now a year old, and has been to the GI dr. once when she was 6 weeks. Since then I have followed the advice and eliminated all types of dairy from my diet and other things following a strict elimination diet. But, at her year checkup I was told she now needs to try milk, and what’s more needs 16-18 oz daily!! The Gi said she had milk allergies. I am scared to try out milk (I know I eventually have too but still)and bring back all the reflux syptoms for her. How do I go about doing this?
Before the np mentioned trying milk she asked if she still has ger symptoms, I said yes, but hardly, and that’s when she said to try to give her some milk. I hate the thought of her suffering
. Has anyone else gone through this? What were the results? Or did some of you skip milk and go to rice milk etc?? Please respond, thanks.June 26, 2006 at 4:23 pm #10570Anonymous
InactiveThere is nothing saying you have to have your baby on milk at a year old. I absolutely hate when doctors say that. It really bothers me, sorry!! I see that your breastfeeding, that is the best nutrition that you can give your baby and if that is what you are comfortable with don’t let anyone change your mind. I wish that I could have done it for even half the time that you did but I dried up in one week. My Emma has been on Alimentum since around 5 months and it has worked great. We tried hidden diary at 13 months and it failed horribly. I don’t mean to scare you b/c I have seen success stories at a year old but some don’t. I did the trial when I was ready not when someone told me I had to. My GI actually recommended that I wait until she was 15 months. If you do want to do it I recommend to do hidden diary first; yogurt, cheese, then ice cream. They are much easier to digest. It took 2 weeks of these for the proteins to build up in Emma for us to see a reaction. We are starting our 2nd trial now. Our GI said yogurt for 2 weeks, if that goes good continue the yogurt then try cheese for 2 weeks. If cheese goes good continue and try ice cream for 2 weeks. After 6 weeks or so and everything is good then add maybe ½ oz of milk to formula. It should be a very slow process to make sure it goes smoothly. Some mothers that have babies that eat solids very well do go to rice milk (can cause constipation) or 2% milk. I haven’t tried either since Emma doesn’t eat, and she needs the nutrients from the Alimentum. Hopefully they will post their transition. Don’t let them worry you!!

KeymasterI totally agree!
you do what you think is best!!
what I would do is for YOU to introduce milk into your diet and see what if any reactions your daughter has. then, after let’s say 3wks of her being fine with milk proteins in the breastmilk then you can introduce hidden dairy into her food- like cheese crackers, etc…then after let’s say 3 wks of that, you could try processed dairy like cheese & yogurt and then, after 3 wks of that you could try actual milk…
toddlers do not need milk per se. they need the calcium. there’s calcium in all kinds of foods…
if you go to my welcome/intro there’s a link about mspi & from there there’s links about how to reintroduce into your diet from the elimination diet, and more…HTH
(I breastfed jonah to 15months- by 12 months we were at 2 nursing sessions- 1rst thing in the a.m & before bed. he barely would even touch milk until he was 18 months old…but, he could eat dairy products…)

InactiveI agree that there is no reason you HAVE to switch her over to milk because she’s a year. My dd was on formula until 18 months and luckily at that time we had a successful milk trial. I really thought she’d be on formula even longer. Stick to your gut and do what you think is right.
