InactiveI might sound silly but I’m scared to even think of having another child. Our first 4 months were such a nightmare b/c of Ariella’s reflux, that we’re afraid our second child will have it as well and we’ll have to go through all of that all over again.
We originally wanted three, but now…I don’t know. Do you know if there is a link between siblings in terms of reflux? What are the chances of having baby #2 with it? I don’t even know if there were studies done to research it. Oh, and no, we’re not thinking of having another one now….we’ll probably wait a year before trying again.April 24, 2007 at 3:05 pm #31341Anonymous
InactiveUgh, tell me about it. I’d say the first three months almost made me sterile. No way did I want another child. But now, at almost 9 months, she is doing so much better (unless she’s teething or has a cold – which she has both of right now). As you continue to see Ariella grow and blossom, I’m sure you’ll have the itch to have another child. We actually started talking about trying in about another year.
I’m also concerned about the possibilty of having another child with reflux. But, as my mother said, you’ll be so informed with the next one and you’ll know what to ask for and your child won’t needlessly suffer like the first. And another nugget of wisdom from her was reflux sucks, but there is worse out there. I’m starting to feel that way myself too. There were so many things I worried about during pregnancy and reflux wasn’t even on my radar. Looking back, I’ll remember how hard it was, but knowing I did the best I could.

InactiveWe are in the same boat. I would love to have another child soon but with the possibility of reflux and Entercolitis, it scares me to death! We couldn’t afford Neocate with a second child and are lucky now that dh’s work is paying the $405 monthly bill!!!
I do not know if their are any studies done but know there are a couple on this board whose 2nd child did not have reflux so there is something positive!!!

My dh and i are back and forth on this. We are so scared that #2 will have the same problems. Plus we owe children’s hospital way too much $$April 24, 2007 at 7:35 pm #31367Anonymous
InactiveIt is a scary thought to have another one when all you know is stressssssss! A co worker was due a few months after I had Sarah and I always felt so guilty after talking with her because I was so NEGATIVE about everything! BUT it was really hard to deal with her screaming/fussing/being a prisoner all day (as you well know). I felt like I always ended my conversations “oh, but I DO love her so much and it’s amazing”…I just didn’t want to scare her!
We laugh about it now because she admits even her non reflux little guy is a lot of work. Actually I was 4 days late last month and about had a complete nervous break down because of the reality of having another one!!
Maybe that means we’re not QUITE ready yet.
Don’t fret…the time will come when you’ll be ready.April 24, 2007 at 7:57 pm #31375Anonymous
InactiveWe didn’t feel ready for another one until about a month before we started trying again. Then, we both kind of had that “a-ha” moment when we realized that we were ready. There have been a lot of discussions about this on the board in the past and we came to the realization that the parents on this board make repeat refluxers look really common, but there are actually tons of parents who had a gerdling and then had babies without reflux. They just never post about it because they are busy with their new babies and didn’t “need” the site anymore. Laura is the exception to the rule.

Our second baby was a refluxer, but she was tons easier than Kaelyn. So, you can be “blessed” with reflux more than once, but it’s not always a nightmare.

InactiveBoth of my boys had reflux and we are actually talking about having a third. I have no dought that number three will have it and it makes me really sad. I would love to have one cuddly, great sleeping baby, but maybe if we adopt number 4 we will have that. The good thing is I now know what I’m doing. Our plan is to wait until Justice is 3 before having our next one. It is very tough to have a two year old and a refluxer. We haven’t prayed about it yet, so God may want us to adopt instead of having our own, but we will see.
As far as the money goes, you could always breastfeed.
With Luke my oldest I didn’t bf and it cost so much to do nutramigen (sp) with Justice I was determined to bf and it has been such a blessing. Also, we had Justice at home with a midwife. The hospital bill would have been 10 thousand or more, but at home was only 3 thousand it was the most beautiful experience ever. I am a wimp when it comes to pain too. Somebody recently said to me, ” the reflux lasted only a short period and now look at the wonderful baby you have now”. They were so right. If you read my begining posts you will see it was pure hell for us, but I would do it all over again. I can’t believe I just wrote that.

InactiveI don’t know when we will try for #2. We have the same fears. Thenlast night my 4 year old nephew spent the night and Adriana is teething so I was up ALOT with both of them. (He ate a bunch of candy and was very restless during sleep). So I was thinking, How do people handle more than 1 kid?

InactiveI’ve had the same worries about having a 3rd, especially since our first 2 have had reflux and intolerances. In some ways, the second time around was easier because I knew what I was dealing with much earlier on, and how to help her. But in other ways, it has been harder because I have a very busy toddler to care for at the same time, and often I worry that I’m not able to give him all the care and attention he deserves. Oh, and of course, I thought I was tired with one child, now getting a nap with two kids is nearly impossible! They are very rarely asleep at the same time, but somehow they both seem to need to be fed or changed at the exact same time!
I still want that number 3 though….April 25, 2007 at 10:19 am #31410Anonymous
InactiveMy feeling is that if reflux is the only thing holding you back you should just go ahead and have another baby if that’s what you really want because that yearning to have another baby may never go away, but the reflux is only a short (albeit miserable) period of time in the big scheme of things. Of course this is easy for me to say since I’m done having babies and my last refluxer has been reflux free for 9 months now.

InactiveI have felt much the same way as you. I want another one but know that one child with seizures and one sleepless child with reflux and a feeding aversion is more than I can handle. But I haven’t ruled out the possibility.
I would follow you heart, and wait until you get the “urge” and feel the time is right. You will know when that is.
Some people have multiple babies with reflux, others don’t. My first child didn’t have reflux and was a great eater.
The thing is babies is that you never know what you’re going to get, reflux or otherwise. We all hope for the best, but never know what the outcome is going to be. Good luck in your decision.

InactiveI felt the same way when Brianna was younger, but now, I would love to have more children. DH and I aren’t in any hurry per say, but there was a time during the midst of the reflux nightmare that I said no more, now I say, if God leads us there, it is right.

KeymasterMAYBE mspi/allergies are more likely to be amongst siblings rather than reflux from an immature LES???
who knows?
But look at me
– Ari is reflux free, whoo hoo!!
As Kim says, there might be more ‘like me’ out there, but they’re all off leading normal lives, not addicted to this site
, so they’re not here to post of their non-refluxers…April 25, 2007 at 9:37 pm #31482Anonymous
InactiveMy first had reflux; I prayed my 2nd (they are 22 months apart) wouldn’t, but he does. Interestingly, we thought my first’s was from immature issues, but my 2nds is from MPI and it makes me wonder if my first also had MPI issues and we just never knew it (to this day he doesn’t like milk). My 2nd was MUCH harder than my first. We wanted three — no way now. It was just too hard the 2nd time. That being said, wow am I so glad I have 2. The way my boys interact, even now, it’s priceless — worth every minute of lost sleep and every day spent in stained, smelly, thrown up on clothes!
I, too, wonder about genetics. I’d be very interested in any studies pople know about and if there is a link.
Good luck to all of you with your decisions.
