Screaming while eating

Hi everyone,
I have an 11 week old that has been screaming while eating since 3 weeks old. She starting spitting up formula and what smells like stomach acid at 2 weeks. The Doc put her on Zantac and we switched her to Alimentum. (My first daughter was allergic to milk proteins and had to be on Alimentum for 8 months). An X-ray was done to check for a hernia. No hernia. Then an ultrasound was done to check for pyloric stenosis. that was Neg. The Zantac didn’t help at all so we went to a Ped GI doc. She was diagnosed with GERD. He put her on carafate and prevacid 7.5mg a day. 2 weeks later she was still screaming and refusing bottle. We basically have to force her to eat. It would take an hour + to feed her just to have her spit it up .Called GI doc, and we put her on prevacid 7.5mg 2x a day, took her off carafate and switched to Nutramigan. 3 days later some of the screaming had stopped but not all feedings. Went back to GI, found blood in stool so we put her on Elecare. A week later she was still crying, doc found blood in stool,so the doc put her on Neocate. A week later, still crying, I took her to a different GI specialist. He didn’t find any blood in stool and said she was fine to drink Elecare or Neocate. Both seem to cause a lot of gas and constipation. He did blood workup and everything was normal. He seems to think its just colic and gave her Levsin drops. I haven’t given them to her yet, and really don’t want to. I thought colic was defined as crying for 3 or more hours at a time. She doesn’t cry unless she is eating. She has been putting on weight and is starting to sleep better. The feedings are so emotionally draining for the whole family. It’s hard to feed her knowing she is in so much pain and listening to the screaming is horrible. Sometimes she spits up the whole bottle and then screams. She was also diagnosed with plagiocephaly this week. We are not sure if it is positional or caused from a fused suture. She is going this week for an x-ray. At this point we are so tired of seeing doctors without getting anywhere. Its like they don’t listen and/or don’t care. Anyone going through this? Should we just give up and deal with the feedings until she hopefully outgrows it? I am concerned that it is hurting her and will cause problems in the future. Please Help.

I’ve had two reflux babies so I sure know how hard it is. Those agonizing feeding sessions followed by puking can just tear you apart. I remember them vividly and I feel for you because I know how horrible it is. No, you should not give up. You’re baby probably needs a higher dose of Prevacid. Most docs under dose because they are not aware of some current research that shows babies need higher doses given three times per day because they metabolize these meds 3-4 times faster than adults. It took some serious work for me to convince my son’s doctor to give him a higher dose, but once I did things finally turned around. Here’s the site that convinced her. http://www.marci-kids.com I printed and faxed this info to her and then called her daily until she upped his dose. Once he was on the right dose he began to eat like a normal baby. No more screaming, writhing during feedings.

Also, make sure you give the solutab on an empty stomach and then follow it up with a feeding 30 minutes later. This will give you the best results.

Good luck and keep fighting. A baby should not hate eating, and there is help out there.
