InactiveDS is four months old and I think he weighs about 15 pounds. He is on 7.5 mG Prevacid in the a.m. and another 7.5 mg PM. Our biggest issue has been feeding aversions. He was doing pretty well on Prevacid but feeding was a real struggle. From the 29th until Monday, he actually finally was eating OK, but recently started to spit up more and have more reflux symptoms again and now we’re back to fighting feedings. He’s mostly still breastfeeding okay when I’m home (but a bit less, has started to be fussier and did refuse one feeding with me yesterday–afraid it will get worse again), but is refusing the bottle. He had an ounce to an ounce and a half in a 12 hour period yesterday but otherwise seems happy. Last night, he ate with me but had a couple huge spit-ups including one choking/gagging one that was more like vomiting. Spit up all his medicine twice last night and I didn’t re-dose after that.
My doctor will not prescribe Zantac in conjunction with Prevacid. She doesn’t want to do Zegerid. She is not comfortable increasing his Prevacid dose as it’s at the top of the usual dosing chart they use (not the Marci-Kids chart). She recommends seeing a GI specialist as a next step. DS isn’t that BAD compared to a lot of stories I hear about kids not sleeping and screaming in pain all the time so I feel like this is overkill. On the other hand, my mom says my idea of “normal” is now skewed and I should have him seen. We’re at a point where he’s generally seeming pretty happy…although he’s getting fussier again…and we can’t have him not eating!!! It is frustrating to feel like we’re so close to having this under control but not have options.
I called the hospital today and the first available GI appt is May 9. I can call my doctor to try to have them get us in sooner and am debating doing that but am not sure how much difference it will make. I feel bad for DS and don’t want to cause long-term issues, but I think this is the peak and by May 9 he’s likely to have improved. WWYD????

InactiveHi Nicole,
I say go to another doctor that is comfortable with upping your son’s dose of Prevacid. That is exactly what my husband and I had to do. I loved our Ped. and she tried to help, but she would not put our son Jordan on more than like 7 mgs of Prilosec a day. Of course back at that time, most doctors didn’t have experience with using PPI’s on babies. We went out of state to a Pediatric GI when Jordy was four months old (felt like it took forever for that appt. to roll around). She ended up increasing his dose to 30 mgs of Prilosec a day. Once they are on a proper dose, they do so much better. Always trust those mommy instincts… and do what you have to in order for your child to be comfortable and not be in pain or discomfort!Michelle2011-04-07 12:02:58
