InactiveOk, fine…I admit that Ariella takes after me (I don’t like poulty or meat too much either) but she absolutely refuses to eat it! I already mixed it with veggies and she still spits it out. What do I do? My m-i-l tells me to add some salt but I don’t really want her to get used to salty food. I’m worried that she’s not getting her proteins. She used to be a veggie girl. Now she likes fruits more (sigh). Also, while we’re on the subject, is salmon ok for her now? Do I bake it in the oven like I normally do? Thanks.

Inactiveif you are talking about jarred baby food chicken—-i wouldn’t eat it either. that stuff is like eating wet sawdust—–only i think that the wet sawdust would have more flavor.

InactiveI never bothered with the jarred meats because they are so gross, IMO. LOL. Myles ate the chicken/broccoli which they no longer make but otherwise none of my kids had jarred meats.
If you’re trying real chicken, how about some melted cheese on top? Or grated parmesan? Liza loved chicken, but my other two were not so thrilled about it. They got their protein from breast milk/formula, yougurt and cheese for a long time before they would eat meat.July 26, 2007 at 8:58 pm #39926Anonymous
InactiveBrodie used to love the chicken and apples or chicken and pears or something like that, it was a stage 2 baby food mixed with fruit, he used to love them and I know they tend to be more on the sweet side so it might help for now… RLM4262007-07-26 20:59:00

InactiveI think she is fine at that age still w/not eating much of the meats, because she is still on a lot of formula. i could be wrong though. and there are two baby formulas that shane LOVES that has chicken in them, and you wouldnt even know. They are both by the organic brands.. one is sweet potato and chicken, and the other his a hawainn chicken by healthy times (another organic brand) , i used to order almost all my baby food from that sight, he really took to them better than gerber anyhow.
And as for chicken/meats now (after one).. the ONLY meat he will eat is these breaded chicken tenders by bell & evans. you can find it at the healthfood store, and they are just now selling them at the local grocery stores! they are awsome, and he cant get enough.hope that helps!oh yea, and you can try egg yolk for protien. we hard boil an egg and give just the yolk… he isnt too thrilled with it anymore though! 😉and i am not sure about fish under one year of age.. maybe someone else could help.July 26, 2007 at 10:45 pm #39936Anonymous
InactiveChristine (kevieb) I make the chicken myself. I make chicken soup and blend the chicken in the blender.
Christine (ndrose) thank you for the suggestion but I don’t mix dairy with meat (but I bet it tastes good). Dh is surprised how I can have a sandwich without cheese 🙂Lauren, I think I read it in a baby magazine. Salmon one of the finger foods (I could be wrong, I’m not too sure of the age they mentioned).July 26, 2007 at 11:51 pm #39938Anonymous
InactiveI think it’s best to wait on any kind of fish until after they are one year. As for chicken, my boys liked the jarred ones like turkey and green beans, chicken & sweet potatoes, etc. Does Ariella eat any finger foods yet? What about some deli meat on bread, cut into cubes? We always did the egg yolks like Lauren suggested too.

InactiveAlana will not eat chicken either! She will eat most other meats though. HAve you tried some legumes as a protein source? I’m not sure about the rules for fish but lots of my friends introduced it (in moderation) around 9 months or so. Alana still isn’t a fan but we offer her small amounts occasionally when we might have it (which is rarely because I hate Seafood).

InactiveI really wouldn’t worry about it too much. She’s still young and the texture of meet is hard for babies even when it’s blended. She’s still on BM or formula at this stage, so it’s only for exposure, really, not so much nutrition. Meat is hard one for a lot of babies at that age.
I used to make chicken for Sarah similar to the way you’re doing it- I’d get Kosher chicken (b/c they’re often more tender) and make a soup with lots of carrots. Then I’d take out the legs and use the dark meat for her food. I’d blend it up with some of the soup- adding the actual soup is what keeps it moist. Then I’d separate it into different piles- I’d keep one plain, then I’d add some carrots to another and blend, add some baked sweet potatoe to another, sweet potatoe and apple to another, etc. I found that the chicken/sweet potatoe/apple blend is really good. I think the key is not to overload it with meat. But anyhow, like I said, I wouldn’t worry about it. Neither of my kids were big meat eaters, and Sarah now loves meat.

oops
i meant baby FOOD. but yes, the sweet potato/chicken one is very good. and i once put chicken in the blender as chicken soup, and he wanted nothing to do with it too!July 28, 2007 at 2:37 pm #40023Anonymous
InactiveBen won’t eat the plain baby food meat either! Can’t say that I blame him. It looks and smells disgusting. But, as some of the others have mentioned, he seems to do ok with the Stage 2 meat and veggie or fruit combos. He really likes the chicken and apples and does ok with the chicken and vegetables.
We haven’t tried dairy with him either, so I’ve been giving him black beans to help with the protiens. He LOVES them. I just use the canned kind and heat them for a few seconds in the microwave and he eats them right up. They are the perfect size for him to pick up and eat himself. I got a can of navy beans to try next.

KeymasterI would say try roasted chicken (or boiled) and pull the dark meat into tiny strips- you can use chicken stock to keep it moist and try it as fingerfood
have you tried ground chicken or turkey (or even beef) meatballs? you can use pureed carrots in there for some flavor and make them w/ an egg yolk…you can also try making french toast w/ an egg yolk or making a soft/medium boiled egg if she doesn’t like hard boiled egg yolk & try spreading the yolk on some toast or mix it into some riceI make all kinds of rice/cheese combinations to make it easier for little fingers- you can add all kinds of things into it, like pureed veggies (carrots, spinach, squash, green beans, etc)July 29, 2007 at 9:33 am #40063Anonymous
Inactiveohlaura good idea w/the yolk and rice mix, shane kinda wont do the yolk anymore.
ohh.. what do you guys think about chicken hotdogs?? i know she is too young for them.. but Shane loves them! i do know that they are a choking hazard though! is there a safe way to give them?shanesmom2007-07-29 09:34:45

InactiveLaura, thanks. I’m getting so upset with Ariella not willing to finger feed herself. She plays with the food, smothers it all over the table, throws on the floor but it never ends up in her mouth. I’m afraid if I keep giving it to her, she won’t learn to self feed any time soon.
