I took my 9 week old twins to a pedi gi dr today for the first time. They’re on zantac and mylanta and NOT working. He takes a short history, listens to their chests and then says go up .2 on the zantac and see him in 3 weeks. Oh yeah and add rice cereal(1 tsp) to all bottles. He then tells me if I want to continue giving them bm I cannot eat any milk or soy or stop bfing. My pedi and I were just starting to add dairy back. And he said that had I held them in for 3 more weeks they probably wouldn’t have reflux. They were 35w2d. I was flabbergasted and insulted. I am afraid to feed cereal or any solids because of food allergies and asthma and he just dismissed my concern. And he refuses to even try prevacid or prilosec because they haven’t been tested in preemies. I tried explaining that feeding times are a nightmare but he refused to listen and just dismissed my concerns. Help!

While yes, reflux does seem to occur in a higher percentage of preemies than full term babies, it still happens to a lot of full term babies. Kaelyn was born just 5 days early and yet she still had a horrible case of reflux. No doctor should dismiss your concerns without giving you legitimate medical reasons!

And as for your docs opinion that they wouldn’t have reflux if they were full term, Hailey was almost a week late, and her reflux is AWFUL!!!!- so so much for that theory. I hope that you find a doc who will listen to you and help your little ones.

March 8, 2006 at 10:45 pm #3355AnonymousInactiveit just seems like some gi docs are not up to date on their info—–not sure why, since they “specialize” in pediatric gastro problems. i wish i could send you to our ped gi—-he was up to date on info with sylvia’s reflux, and he is up to date on celiac with my other girls. (although it was my detective work that first suggested celiac as a problem) i’d go for another opinion. kevieb2006-3-8 22:46:20
