Shrimp poppers show up on Seth’s daycare menu every few weeks. I have not let him have them yet but I’ve noticed children younger than him eating them. I thought shrimp was an allergen. Do you think it would be ok for him to have them or should I keep holding off? Does anyone else feed these to their kids?

We’ve never done shrimp with Owen for the same reason – we thought it was an allergen and it wasn’t worth it to us to try. We have given him salmon and fish sticks with success, but I think that’s all we’ve done with him in terms of seafood. We haven’t even done tunafish yet so I guess we’ve been pretty slow as far as seafood goes. What does the daycare say about it?
May 30, 2006 at 1:15 pm #8771AnonymousInactiveI wonder if it may be imitation shrimp. I can’t imagine they’d give real shrimp to babies. I wouldn’t let him eat it yet either.

They will provide an alternative on the shrimp days. Seems like such an ordeal but apparently the kids really like them and Seth seemed to want them last time. The only fish he has had is fish sticks and is fine with that but I still may hold off a little longer. I tried tuna fish once but he wanted nothing to do with it. I keep meaning to try it again. So, Owen liked the salmon? I have lots of things to talk with you about but will post under “keeping in touch” so I don’t get too far off topic.
Christine, good point about maybe them being imitation shrimp although I bet they are based on the daycare policies above. I will have to check on that. Thanks for always answering my posts!

May 30, 2006 at 2:49 pm #8788hellbenntKeymasterI’ve just now, at almost 3yrs old, let Jonah have shrimp. We have seafood allergies in our families, though- my mother’s brother & sister and dh’s brother- so I didn’t want to chance it. so far so good…
May 30, 2006 at 4:34 pm #8799AnonymousInactiveIf there are any issues with seafood allergies in your family then I’d wait. If not, and he seems to want them, I might let him try them. With all of Kaelyn’s other allergies, we’ve been afraid to try much of anything lately!
May 30, 2006 at 8:18 pm #8814AnonymousInactiveI haven’t given Hailey shrimp either. I don’t know why really because Hailey hasn’t had any allergic reactions since she was a year old and no one in our family is allergic to shrimp. We did tuna salad pretty early on and Hailey loves it. She doesn’t like it on bread but likes to eat it with a spoon. We introduced the dreaded peanut butter yesterday and no reaction so I’m thrilled. Shrimp may be next!
I’d be inclined to trial it if he’s not having other allergies and no one in the family has any trouble.
P.S. I miss talking with you guys! Hope all is well with everyone!

Stacey, that’s great Hailey did ok with the peanut butter! That’s another one that has me running scared although we don’t have any history of any food alleriges in the family on either side.
June 2, 2006 at 10:32 am #8994AnonymousInactiveamelia has had salmon, tuna, mahi mahi, blue hake, trout & cod, but i just don’t want to deal with the exposure to shellfish yet. she’s got issues with milk & soy so i’ll be holding off shellfish until somewhere around 3-5.
just a handy site to make sure if your feeding fish that they aren’t getting to much exposure to mercury. it’s a little calculator, just put in babies weight & amt of fish eaten.
