Inactivei just started my son on lactofree after being on alimentum. I originally breastfed but couldnt have dairy, chocolate or caffeine without al being miserable so when i started supplementing i chose alimentum ( my daughter was on it..she was mspi) thinking he was going to be the same because of his reaction to dairy . but after finding out he had gerd i realized that it might have been that causing the problems and not an allergy so i decided to try lacto free and try and save a few dollars. but its been so many years since my daughter was little, what are the signs to look for if he cant handle it????

InactiveThe main sign with Sarah is fussiness. BUT other symptoms might include mucousy stools, eczema, rashes, increased spit up. I’m sure there are others but I’m drawing a blank right now. Good luck. Let us know how it goes! Also Good Start may be a good alternative to alimentum if he can handle it. It IS milk based but it’s partially broken down (and cheaper!). Just a thought for later down the road. I wouldn’t do too many formula changes at once. Also remember to give the formula a good two weeks before you decide if it’s working or not (unless things are OBVIOUSLY bad) Sometimes it takes that long to adjust and for the other formula to leave the system.

InactiveFor my son it was just constant crying and refusal to eat after so long b/c he was associating pain with eating. I would also have his stool checked the next time you are in the office to see if there is any microscopic blood in it. My son had blood in his stool for months b/f we got him on neocate.
And all the things Amy mentioned!July 6, 2007 at 2:51 pm #38713Anonymous
Inactiveblood in stools, excessive gas, painful bowel movements and just like Amy I am drawing a blank and believe there is more.

Inactivethanks for all your answers. im thinking i might go to good start, the lacto free is still pretty expensive. its worth a try. so far hes doing good, only thing different is hes eating more and his poops arent as runny. maybe the dairy problem from breastfeeding was bc of reflux or he outgrew it..i hope so..
