InactiveJay did spit up a little bit when he was a few wks old so I started eliminating dairy from my diet. He had not spitted for about 4 mo.
I stayed off until last month. He was diagnosed last month and started prevacid. I started adding hidden dairy slowly. He still doesn’t spit up, but this not eating business is killing me. Do you think I should of stayed off of hidden dairy from my diet? Maybe he will want to nurse? I’m a vegetarian so soy is my main diet. Maybe soy is bothering him?Would the mother’s diet effect silent refluxer too? He does not have any other classic signs and symptoms of reflux. He is not fussy, he is a happy baby, sleeps great (except for the past few days). He JUST DOES NOT NURSE well

KeymasterDiet can affect any kind of reflux…but I don’t think it would affect spitting? Most of what I’ve read is that it can effect baby’s stools and fussiness/pain/irritablility.
The medicines won’t necessarily help with spit up, either. They are for managing pain as well so the esophogus doesn’t get damaged and can heal from all the acid.
Not eating can be because baby associates food with pain.
Maybe the higher dose of Prevacid will help.
What are his stools like? His sleeping? does he get rashes or excema?these things are more diet related, I would think.

InactiveThe higher dose of Prevacid may take a while to kick in, at least a few days but it could be two weeks since his previous dose was so low. For Myles it took 10 days.
The hidden dairy could definitely be bothering, as could the soy. Since he’s spitting more with the hidden dairy I’d try to eliminate that, and then wait two weeks to see if the higher dose turns things around, and if not then try eliminating soy. If things improve with the higher dose you can slowly start adding hidden dairy again to see if he tolerates it.
He could also be teething.

InactiveHis sleeping habits drastically changed since last week. His stools are ok, we did get it checked out for blood. He does not have any rashes or anything. He doesn’t fuss, he is a happy baby. Maybe since I started adding hidden dairy in my diet his reflux is acting up even with the meds. As of last Thursday he is getting prevacid 30 mg a day. He is teething I know, I give him tylenol, hylands tablets, frozen wash cloths etc.
Last night he was up from 1:30 to 5am, not crying or anything, he just wanted to play and climb on me, he did not want to nurse either. He did have a little stuffy nose though. I do have a cool mist humidifier going on in his room. He has been up since 7am. Today he only nursed 6 min to go down for a nap at 11am.

InactiveBrianna has silent reflux as well, but dairy and soy (especially soy)did bother her (well actually at least I think it did, and it made me feel better to avoid it…like I was dong something). She was never a fussy baby either, but she had a hard time sleeping. She would wake up every few hours at night, and couldn’t take a long nap to save her life
. If there is one thing I learned through all this, you need to take things one step at a time. (I am the worse person to say this becuase I would always say things like : OK, i am going to increase the meds and avoid dairy…then I never ended up knowing what was working
) If I were you I would give the higher dose of meds at least two weeks to kick in, and then I would try elminating the hidden dairy, and then last the soy. If none of those help, you may want to take a look at the other popular protien intolerances. Good luck!January 15, 2007 at 4:22 pm #22417Anonymous
InactiveI’m jealous of those of you who don’t have fussy refluxers. Mine is extremely fussy – that’s what made us think reflux to begin with. Other than being VERY fussy most days he doesn’t have many signs (other than the swallowing, coughing, etc.) However, I am SO thankful he eats well and is growing so well. Isn’t that strange how the symptoms can differ so much for each child?

InactiveI am the mom of a silent refluxer.
I am breastfeeding.
He’s on medication.
I tried everything I could to avoid medication. I did my own modified version of an elimination diet I found on the web. It helped his symptoms, but he still needed meds. He’s on meds now and I still have to follow the elimination diet.
It’s either 20% or 40% (I can’t remember!) of babies that have a milk intolerance also have a soy intolerance. But it is common for them to be sensitive to both.
Already I KNOW I can’t have Milk (I do eat a yogurt a day to keep the thrush at bay! LOL), eggs, chocolate, coffee or tea (even if it’s decaf), citrus fruit, carbonated beverages, beans, spicy foods, oh and my prenatal vitamins!!
I have to limit the amount I eat of these foods to very small quantities: onions, tomatoes, dairy (other than milk), wheat
I suspect but haven’t confirmed: Apples, corn, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, peppers
I’m sure there’s more I’m forgetting right now, LOL
I pretty much eat any meat, potatoes, pasta, rice, yams, carrots, green beans, early peas, salads (with just lettuce and dressing for now), peanut butter sandwiches, pears, water, non-citrus juice, bread, waffles and oatmeal.

Yeah, I know, but the yogurt doesn’t bother him, it gives me a good source of calcium and I enjoy it!
