when has everyone started sippy cups with their children? and what did you find works best in them? whenever i have given him a little water because he has the hicups he seems to throw up.. and i didnt know if juice would make the reflux worse, because most are acidic.
any info or experience i would appreciate
thanks

he seems a bit young to me anyway??
November 27, 2006 at 12:47 pm #19044AnonymousInactiveohh, because i saw in a gerber article to start introducing a sippy cup around 6 mos. and not to put anything but formula in their bottle.

November 27, 2006 at 1:04 pm #19045AnonymousInactiveMy sitter started Brodie with plain water in a sippy cup around 6 months. My only regret is that is the only thing he would drink out of a sippy and even now, he still won’t drink milk out of a sippy, just a straw cup. I said if I have another child, I will put formula in the sippy cup, instead of water. They develop such preferences at an early age.
November 27, 2006 at 1:45 pm #19048AnonymousInactiveI guess I started trying a sippy cut around 8 months for my three. None of them took to it well. They all learned to use a straw cup long before a sippy cup. 5 1/2 months probably is a little young.
November 27, 2006 at 6:45 pm #19081hellbenntKeymasterI started w/ a sippy w/ water at about 6 months
I only put water (I was breastfeeding Jonah)

She had been “playing” with a sippy cup at daycare for a few weeks before that. I’ve been giving her one at home every once in a while but she hasn’t really gotten the hang of “drinking” from it yet. She just chews on it.
Sarah doesn’t really care for water…so I’ve been at a loss for what to put in it. I know this sounds stupid, but I didn’t really think of formula…DUH! Guess I could try that!

November 27, 2006 at 8:52 pm #19100hellbenntKeymasterput an ice cube in with the water; it’s fun to clang the cup around & make noise
November 27, 2006 at 8:59 pm #19104AnonymousInactiveOoooohhhh, good idea Laura – She’ll love that!
November 27, 2006 at 9:30 pm #19111AnonymousInactiveyep, i thought i heard 6 mos. ! it does seem young though, i am in no rush. i just thought it would be fun. but, has anyone else experienced water not agreeing well? and juice being too acidic? or am i crazy?
i will def do the ice cube thing once we try!
November 28, 2006 at 10:51 am #19156AnonymousInactiveWe started Brianna on a sippy cup around 6 months…she didn’t really love it or hate it…but we kept it around…it wasn’t until a few months ago that she really took off using the cup…I only put water in it now (i am breastfeeding) but when she did have a round of diarrhea, my Ped. said I could give her diluted apple juice…I asked about the reflux and acid thing…she said the only juices she really worried about were citrus ones. However, I wasn’t in a huge hurry to get brianna on juice, so we only did that for a bit. Also, I know it sounds silly, but I was told not to do juice until 6 months (I am sure that a lot of people have heard different, but just from what I heard). I know that is only 2 weeks away for you, but babies can do a lot of development in 2 weeks. 🙂 The ice thing was key for us! Or maybe try formula…
November 28, 2006 at 1:19 pm #19171hellbenntKeymasterwe don’t do juice…I just did the ice thing & always kept the sippy available for Jonah to have around. As he got ‘used’ to it he began to really drink water from it & then I introduced a straw maybe at 10months?
November 28, 2006 at 3:06 pm #19188AnonymousInactiveMy daughter couldn’t figure out a sippy cup until I took out the valve that keeps it from spilling. It made a mess everywhere.. on her and in the house, but I just used water. Once she figured out what was in there and how to get it, I put the valve back in.
November 28, 2006 at 5:23 pm #19207AnonymousInactiveNaomi – That’s a good idea b/c I don’t think Sarah realizes that she can get anything out of it. I have one sippy cup that is really similar to bottle (the nipple is) and that’s the only one she actually drinks out of, the rest of them she just plays with/chews on. I’ll have to try that.

November 28, 2006 at 9:18 pm #19231AnonymousInactiveI think that’s part of the problem with sippy cups. They have to suck so hard on them because of that spill proof valve. I don’t use the valves either for that reason.
