InactiveMy three and a half month old has reflux and is doing well, a happy spitter now. The only way he will sleep is on his tummy or in his swing. I’ve tried elevating his mattress, but that doesn’t work. He scoots down. I finally just gave in and let him start sleeping on his tummy and he sleeps all night. All of the SIDS stuff is scary, but it is what he prefers. What position do you guys put your baby in to sleep?
Thanks
Pepper

InactiveBrianna ALWAYS slept on her tummy.
It made me nervous at first, but once she had a little more neck strength, I was better about it. I did get a video monitor, and that helped me because I could see her…for a while I even put a beanie baby on her back so I could see it rise and fall.
Also, I know some other people have talked about an Angel monitor or something that alerts you if your child hasn’t taken a breath in a certain amount of time or something like that. (sorry to sound so uneducated…hopefully someone else with the monitor will chime in)May 30, 2007 at 3:37 pm #34991Anonymous
InactiveBen slept on his tummy and so did my daughter. Now that he moves around, he’s mostly on his side, but when little, the tummy was the only way he would sleep.
I too freaked out about it, but he also had good head control, and was a big strong baby, so that helped.
He also was spitting and choking during the night when I would put him on his back, and that freaked me out. It made more sense to me anyway, for him to sleep on his tummy, so that when he threw up, it wouldn’t choke him.

InactiveCooper is on his back but mainly b/c I am so scared of SIDS. He also hates tummy time so I haven’t pushed it. I would talk with your doctor and they will probably tell you that it is okay. I think that once they hit 4months or maybe 6 the risk for SIDS is greatly decreased. And not to freak you out, but I also read somewhere that boys are more likely to have SIDS then girls. But I am really paranoid so take what I say with a grain of salt.

InactiveMy pedi actually suggested I put Owen on his stomach. I had put Griffin on his stomach from 6 weeks on, so I felt better about it with the second child. My mom actually started it with his naps when she would watch him……
My pedi said that with refluxers, they don’t have “as much stuff” running back up into their esophagus and throat on their tummies as they do on their backs.
Also, I would hear Owen coughing and it sounded like he was going to choke on his puke sometimes so I thought he was better off on his tummy.
You can only do what is most comfortable for you!

InactiveWe used the Angelcare Monitor with Addy. It has a control pad that you put under the mattress and an alarm sounds on the base monitor and the other monitor (the one you would keep with you), if there is no breathing movement for 15 seconds. I tested ours weekly just to make sure it was working and every time it worked. I also put a 10 lb weight in the bed just to make sure it wasn’t working bc of the weight but after 15 seconds with the weight in there, it went off. We actually had a big scare with it once. It went off while Addy was napping but I guess the alarm on the base monitor woke her up. The alarm stopped but of course I ran in there to check on her and she was sleeping away, just wiggling bc of the alarm waking her. It was really scary and now I always recommend it to friends with babies! It may have saved her life! Here is a link to one at target. (Oh, by the way, we couldn’t use its sound monitor bc it had to much static so we used an additonal sound monitor for that part. Hope that makes sense.)

InactiveWe have the angel care monitor and I still use it for every sleep. We also had a scare once, and Alana took a bit of gentle prodding to wake so she was defiantely deeply asleep.
In the news in Aus over the last few days, they have been discussing Sids. Apparently there has been a 50% increase in cases over the last year or so and they are suggesting it is due to complacency regarding sleeping babies on their back and concerns of getting flat spots. I think if I were to do tummy sleeping I would defiantely get some kind of monitor, but thats just my opinion

Keymasterthis is copied & pasted so plse overlook any incorrect pronouns, lol!
This is from the American Academy of Pediatrics & how they recommend that tummy sleeping is best for GERD babies. http://www.aap.org/new/sids/question.htm (thanks Sherry & Christine!)
There’s a monitor that you can use called the Angel Care Monitor that many of the parents on this board have had great success with. Jonah was sent home with a monitor from the hospital, so I don’t know firsthand about the Angel Care monitor, but here’s all about it: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/search.asp?KW=angelcare&am p;SM=2&SI=TC&FM=0&OB=2
BEANIE BABY: for day time naps I suggest this: Try putting her on her tummy & put a beanie baby on her back for 2 reasons- to see that she’s breathing (the beanie baby will go up & down )
& for the weight- put your hand on her back & then slowly leave it & the beanie baby is there instead…
For sleeping, there’s also the Tucker Sling that people rave about: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/search.asp?KW=tucker&S M=1&SI=TC&FM=0&OB=2
as well as the Amby Hammock: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/search.asp?KW=amby&SM= 1&SI=TC&FM=0&OB=2

InactiveKaelyn slept on her stomach and it was so much better for her. She was on a pulse-oximeter that would go off if her oxygen levels dropped, so that made us feel better. If she hadn’t been on that I probably would have bought an Angel Care monitor.

InactiveJust curious. I have noticed this weekend that Cooper is sleeping on his side during his naps… he hasn’t learned how to roll from his back to his belly, but he is getting really close obviously. Does the angelcare monitor work with babies that are all over their cribs. He starts on his back in the up/down position and usually when he wakes up he is sideways in the crib. I am really paranoid and may look into the monitor, but want to make sure it works if the baby moves all over the crib like Cooper does.

InactiveYes, it works as long as they aren’t completely on one end of the bed…like pushed up against one end of the crib. I think we had to take Addy’s out when she was about 9 months bc she started sleeping in the same corner all the time. But Addy has always been a crazy, roll around type sleeper. But when she found the corner of her crib to be comfy, she would squish herself in it as tight as she could be and the alarm would go off bc she was so far from the center of the bed. I think we bought ours when Addy was around 3 1/2 months bc she was sleeping in our room in a co-sleeper until then.
