My little one, 9 weeks old, has reflux, is on medication but just cannot sleep and is always unhappy. The problem is that the milk refluxes up into her nose and the back of her throat and gets stuck there preventing her from breathing easily. She sounds like she is snoring when she is awake let alone when she is trying to sleep. She also refluxes milk into her lungs and is always coughing, which wakes her as well. Does anyone have any tricks or remedies I could try to prevent this from happening?

Addy does this…I put some rice in her bottle, keep her elevated 30-45 min after she eats and elevate her bed. I never lay her flat! It doesnt always help, but it cuts down on the severity

What do you mean when you say it “gets stuck there?” If she’s not able to clear it, or if it’s affecting her breathing, or you think she may be aspirating, I would bring this to the attention of her doctor if you haven’t already. Maybe she needs to have testing done to make sure that she’s not aspirating. My daughter was always congested from the reflux and it made it hard for her to sleep. Some people have had success with a tucker sling/wedge. Good luck.

I would ask about getting a swallow study done, like what Lori mentions, to see if baby is aspirating- this is done by a Speech Pathologist- sounds funny bcse babies dont have ‘speech’ but anyway the way the baby swallows & how s/he swallows is looked at

also what are the medications? forms (ie: compounded prilosec, prevacid solutab, etc) and amounts (in mgs)? and how much does baby weigh?

the reason I ask is bcse unfortunately many many babies are not medicated ‘properly’

I agree with everything that everyone else says.

Also, are you putting her to sleep on her stomach or on her back? Both of my girls did much better on their stomach.

i would try to elevate her at least 45 degrees at all times. We use a tucker sling for this purpose and has worked well for us.

A swallow study is a very good sugestion.

Yeah, I would have to agree with the others. I would ask for a swallow study to see if the reflux is causing the issues.
