Inactivemy son will be 7 wks monday. he has been diagnosed as a silent refluxer but the word silent to me is ironic…..he is not SILENT! he screams throughout the day. we took him to his pediatrician @ 4wks & he diagnosed him then & we followed up w/ testing a week ago.his pediatrician has now switched him to prevacid(the zantac did not work) & we have been on that for 3 days now. still not seeing any results but i’ve heard that can take awhile. we werent even able to be with our family for Christmas because he screamed the whole day (he was on relgan then also & has since been taken off…we think that made things worse!). he had 4 good hours yesterday of awake time where he was smiling & cooing….thats the longest he’s gone since week2. we were so thankful for those great hours & he was even able to sleep in his own bed (elivated) for his naps & for the night. however, today we are back to square one…he has been fussy the WHOLE day & just had about a 30 min episode of screaming so we have been giving him mylanta some today
i know everyone keeps saying hang in there & he’ll grow out of this but my gosh! it wears on you so much. it is so frustrating & so hard to see such a tiny baby in pain.
i just cant imagine dealing with this at this intensity for another 10 months (i say 10 b/c i hear things might get better when they are closer to the 1 yr mark).

InactiveHi and welcome,
I hope things start improving soon. Prevacid often takes up to 14 days to show improvement. For us, things dramatically improved on day 12. Long time to wait, I know, but hopefully there is some light at the end of the tunnel for you. My son not only had reflux issues, but also protein intolerances, which made things even worse when we started solids. I notice you’re already giving cereal, did things improve at all with that or get worse? There are a LOT of things out there with both pros and cons for adding to bottles so early on, and I’m not trying to comment either way, but wanted to ask if it had caused improvement or not.
Also, ppi drugs are usually more effective when given in multiple doses, broken up throughout the day. Like instead of giving 15mg at one time, giving 7.5 adn 7.5 both morning and evening. Babies metabolize the drug so quickly that it leaves their system pretty rapidly. A great site with info on dosing and reflux: http://www.marci-kids.com
Here’s Laura’s intro link so you can read about all things reflux (including breaking up doses and correct dosing, etc.):

I hope things improve!

Inactivewhat form of prevacid? what dose? and how are you adminstering it? these 3 things make all the difference.

Inactivewe are giving him 15 mg of prevacid 1x/day (solutab it comes in tablet form & we dissolve in h20 1st fill syringe w/ 4cc’s of h20 & then shake up, then after he takes that we fill syringe up w/ 2cc more of h20 & then he takes the rest of it. i have looked @ the marcikids website. do you suggest we give this a try first & then if we dont see improvement maybe suggest to the dr to change it to split the dose up? did you split the tablet in half or how does that work?
we did notice a difference in adding the cereal to his formula. he wasnt screaming the whole time he was eating & he wasnt arching his back or pulling away so much.
we are just getting so frustrated! i know we have to give it time but the crying, really its more like screaming, all day/night is so hard to handle! i’m glad we have support & people to help relieve us at times. my husband & i were talking tonight about how difficult this whole experience has been. we’re both so grateful to have him & so thankful this is just a condition he can outgrow….but it is still hard. we are only 27 & 29 and have already talked about not having more children. i just dont think i could go through this again.
i have 3 best friends who have recently had babies & they all have perfect angels. i know your not suppossed to compare children but at times i find myself wishing my son was more like theirs & then i start feeling guilty like i’m not appreciating or thankful for him.

i just feel like there is no light at the end of the tunnel.

InactiveI agree that it might help to split the dose. My son did much better with two doses of Prevacid, & even better when we started giving him three doses.
Good luck, and I hope these two weeks go by quickly for you and the Prevacid starts helping by then!

InactiveSchmitty,
I really sympathize, I really really do. But trust me, there is light at the end of this tunnel. You are really at the beginning and there are still so many things you haven’t tried and your baby is also very young. The chances that this will improve dramatically in the very near future are very good. But I know that doesn’t really help when you are in the thick of it and pacing the floors all night long.
This is where babywearing comes in. Do you have a baby bjorn, sling or something where your son is somewhat upright while being held against you? The more upright or inclined he is, the better. (I used to joke that I just needed a huge velcro sleeper so that I could velcro my child to my shoulder.) Here’s a link if you don’t already have one: http://www.thebabywearer.com These things are invaluable.
Here is also a link for tips on dealing with reflux– there are excellent suggestions, this is really worth reading:
http://www.askdrsears.com/html/10/T106004.asp
Also, on giving the ppi broken into two doses– this is a confirmed medical fact that it will be better for the baby. convincing your doc of htis might be the tricky part. Did your pediatrician rx the meds or are you seeing a ped gi specialist? You probably need to be seeing a pediatric gastroenterologist– they specialize in these things. Sometimes the specialist doesn’t even get it– but often (not always) peds don’t know a lot about reflux. That’s where Dr. Phillips at Marci-kids.com comes in handy. I communicated with him directly about meds, dosing, etc. and he gave me his recommendations which I printed out and gave to my ped. This helped tremendously. However, in the interum, it depends on how willing you are or how desperate you are, to split the dose and see what happens. You could probably start a new topic called “splitting prevacid solutabs” and just ask a one sentence question about how to do this and you’ll get lots of answers. I never did the solutabs, so I can’t answer you on that one.
Sorry to throw so much at you at once. Trust me, things should improve with the ppi drug– your prevacid. It’s the most helpful drug for infant reflux at this time– in my humble opinion, after reading postings on this site for two years. Here’s a site on ppi drigs: http://www.ppiknow.com that explains exactly what’s going on in your body when you take a ppi drug.
What day are you on for prevacid? Seriously, it was day 12 for us. Use that mylanta cherry supreme, but try to space it out from the prevacid, the marci-kids website talks about this. I would space it three hours apart. I’m just going on memory with the three hour thing, but it’s been a long time since I had a newborn on reflux drugs! Maybe someone else will chime in on this?
Hang in there.

InactiveI understand perfectly how you feel. I used to say things like “I wish I hadn’t had another baby.” Of course, I didn’t mean it…I was sleep deprived and stressed to a point I’ve never experienced in my life. And I used to be envious of people whose babies didn’t throw up all day, who ate like “normal” babies, who slept and didn’t scream day and night. No matter how much you wanted a baby, or how good a mother you are, a reflux baby can really wear you down.
It’s only natural to feel the way you do somtimes. We all know you love Oscar and wouldn’t trade him for anything in the world.
And, it really does get better. I agree with Anne about Prevacid. It was the absolute miracle cure for Myles, and I hope it will be for Oscar too. Hang in there and push for a higher dose if he doesn’t get much better on his current dose.

InactiveI would just echo what everyone has said about the two doses…that really helped Brianna. Also, I found that when I dissolved the prevacid in H2O too many of the granuals where stuck in the syringe and didn’t get into her mouth. So I actually hold it against her cheek and let it dissolve (I know some other mothers have not had luck with this, but it might be worth a try to make sure he is getting the entire dose. Good luck!

InactiveSchmitty,
I completely understand how you feel about your little guy and his silent
reflux. I have a 15 wk old and we’ve been working on his reflux since he
was 5 wks old. He’s been on Zantac, Axid, and now Prevacid. He also has
intolerances to milk and soy so he’s on a hypoallergenic formula by
Similac called Alimentum. That mixed with 2tsp rice cereal (Beechnut
brand) seems to help out a lot.
For my little guy it took exactly 2 wks for the Prevacid to work and that
was a terrible time. He would cry at every feeding and I could barely get
food into him. We couldn’t really leave the house…and still have a hard
time now feeding him in public. The meds have helped but sometimes he
has good days and sometimes he has bad days. Sometimes naps are long
and sometimes he barely naps.
I’ve struggled with the same things you have about not wanting more
children and I’m 31. Lots of my friends have perfect little babies who love
to eat and are doing all the things that baby books say that they should
be doing at this point in their lives. And now that my maternity leave is
ending, I’m finding that I’m looking forward to going back to work.
Then I think to myself…what kind of mother am I. I want to go back to
work and leave my precious little boy in the hands of someone else? How
selfish of me. But at the same time, reflux is really, really hard on you. I
think that when we can finally figure out the right mix of formula/
breastmilk and meds that life truly will get easier. Then we can really
really enjoy our little babies and lead the lives that we thought we’d lead
when we got pregnant.
Having said that, we need to realize that just because our babies have
reflux and it’s hard for them that they are precious and we need to enjoy
EVERY moment. Even the hard ones. I know things will get better for your
little one, mine, and all of our sanities.
Hang in there. We’re lucky to be mommies…reflux or no reflux.
Take care,
Janet

InactiveEveryone has given you such good advice so I won’t add much except to say the 2 x daily worked so much better for us too. We used a pill spliter and split the dosage that way. If you have any Zantac left you might try adding it at least four hours apart from the prevacid just until the prevacid kicks in.

InactiveHang in there chick. It takes a little while to get the right kind of mix of meds/feeding happening but when it does work you will a new woman. yeh you will still have ups and downs, day by day, but your little one will start to feel like entering the world and getting going!
No doubt when he is 21 and a rocket scientist those other perfect babies will be (insert the blank…didn’t want to insult anyone!)I would support the whole two doses a day idea. Alana is only on one dose of Zoton per day, which is really more convenience because she is going to daycare 3 days per week and I didn’t want them messing around with her meds. I would like to give her two but it just isn’t going to happen with me working (so much to feel guilty about so little time) I have to give her Zantac later in the day for the breakthrough acid though. I am sure two doses would work better for her, but circumstances mean I just do what I can do.
Also babies reach there peak crying at around 8 weeks, so hopefully the non-reflux screaming and crying will settle soon, no doubt that is adding to the whole
“SILENT”
picture.I am sure Oscar thinks you are the best mum and dad in the world
