So avocado, we think, went pretty well. Did 4 solid days of it and
other than a bit of a rash/acne on forehead (which seems to be more
from teething and rubbing the area with saliva), no reaction that we
can tell.Plan was to try carrots tomorrow (Earth’s Best since don’t want to deal
with the nitrate issue). Should I only give her carrots in the morning
and then do avocado for her second meal/evening or is it OK to do
carrot for both as long as she seems OK from the morning?February 27, 2006 at 5:14 pm #2593AnonymousInactiveNo real advice, just glad to hear it went well.
February 27, 2006 at 5:33 pm #2595AnonymousInactiveThanks Lori. I was worried about the forehead rash/acne at first but
there is nothing anywhere else like that on her and she has had her
hands in her mouth a TON and rubs that area whenever she’s tired so…February 27, 2006 at 5:46 pm #2597AnonymousInactiveI’ve noticed lots of moms give their babies avacado. Do you prepare it yourself, and if so, how? Or is there a jarred version that I just havent seen?
February 27, 2006 at 6:07 pm #2600AnonymousInactiveI did prepare it myself – got a ripe organic avocado, pitted it,
scooped out the flesh and blended it with some formula. Others have
simply mashed but Marisa didn’t like it that way. Great source of fat
and other stuff…February 27, 2006 at 6:43 pm #2604AnonymousInactiveWith my older daughter, I just cut it in half, took out the pit, mashed it in the “shell” and then fed it to her like that. In my naivety, I tried to do the same thing with Hailey- well she hit the tiniest lump, and proceeded to gag and vomit all over the place. I prepared it another time by waiting until it was really ripe, putting it in a bowl, adding a bit of water, and then using the hand blender to puree it to the right consistency. There were no lumps, but my little-miss-fussy-pants wouldn’t go near it. Maybe Noah will like it, the taste is quite mild and it’s so good for them.
February 27, 2006 at 8:45 pm #2615AnonymousInactiveKaren, we were told only to give new food once per day in the morning. Once a food has been tested for a few days then you can give it at any time of the day.
Glad to hear the avocado went well. We just finished our corn trial which I thought was going ok until we had a 2 hour meltdown last night with terrible reflux, rash and itchy eyes .
February 27, 2006 at 8:58 pm #2617AnonymousInactiveWe did new foods in the morning and stuck to “safe” foods for the rest of the day. I’m glad that the avocado trial went well!
February 27, 2006 at 9:01 pm #2618hellbenntKeymasterJonah loved avocado! now he’s becoming a little bit of a picky toddler, so it’s hit or miss here nowadays…but I still love it! Just mashed it up with some formula…
February 27, 2006 at 9:01 pm #2619AnonymousInactiveThanks guys.
Should I be concerned at all about the rash? She seems happy otherwise
(well as happy as can be expected while teething) and is sleeping well
and no rashes elsewhere or increased reflux… So assume it’s likely
NOT the avocado and is from her hands constantly in mouth and then
rubbing that area?Amber – sorry the corn trial didn’t go well. Hope Tyler is recovering!
February 27, 2006 at 9:50 pm #2627AnonymousInactiveThanks Karen. I havent given him any corn today and he seems ok so I will give him a few days off new food.
If the rash is the only symptom I wouldnt worry just yet. I would continue with the avocado and just watch the rash to see if it gets any worse. If the rash goes away as soon as you stop avocado then it might be a sign of allergy.
February 28, 2006 at 7:24 am #2637AnonymousInactiveIt’s realy just the rash – like red bumps on her forehead. Kind of
angry looking but nowhere else and she slept really well and seems her
normal self… So I guess do carrots this morning (new food) and
avocado this evening/late afternoon and then tomorrow just carrots if
seems OK and see if rash goes away?February 28, 2006 at 9:27 am #2642AnonymousInactiveEdited to add that I’m starting to worry/wonder if the rash is from the
avocado… It’s quite nasty looking and itching her. Still no other
symptoms though. Have a call into doctor’s office but my Ped is out
today so will have to see what one of the other doctors thinks. Hmmm.February 28, 2006 at 10:04 am #2647AnonymousInactiveGood idea Karen. Better to be safe then sorry. Had I waited on Alimentum-things could have gotten worse. It does sound like just a transition period though. My DH and I always have this theory that when they’re on elemental diets for so long any kind of change is bound to give them a little jolt. Actually, didn’t Thais post something about how Matthew always needs a full week of adjustment and then takes the food fine? Can’t recall exactly..
Sorry, I don’t have any advice since we’re not on solids. On a side note, however, I can tell you Ian got a rash on his face just from a day of the brown sugar (small pinch in bottles). We stopped and it went away. Not sure if there was a connection. But it did seem to get him over his hump of taste rejection. Keep your fingers crossed-I take nothing for granted.

February 28, 2006 at 10:34 am #2653AnonymousInactiveIt’s strange – you would think there would be a rash elsewhere and
other symptoms if food allergy. But yes – I always sometimes think
transition period too.I wish my Ped were in today but she’s off Tuesdays. One of the other
doctors in her practice will call back but they aren’t familiar with
Marisa and her many quirks!Hope Ian is still eating. Keep me posted.
