InactiveHey there. My son has severe reflux. He is 6 months old, 3 adjusted. Only on formula no solids yet. He spits up at least 1/4 of his bottle each feeding. He just got switched to Prevacid from Zantac. He is also on Reglan. I was told to open the capsules and put it in his milk and then feed him the milk. I can’t figure out how I am going to do this. I will call the doctor tomorrow but I am so stressed i can’t sleep. If I put it in his milk and then he spits up, what is to prevent him from spitting the med up? Does it work immediately or does it take time to work. Also, he takes it 3 times a day and eats 4 times a day so most of his doses are between feedings. I can’t exactly give him a few sips of milk between feedings just to give him meds. He’ll freak out. Please give me your thoughts and also let me know if your child took this med, how you did it.
Also, he is supposed to take it 3 hours a day. He eats 4 times a day with the bottles spaced 4 hours apart starting at 7 am . How would I space the meds?thanks!September 7, 2007 at 5:47 am #42274Anonymous
InactiveI have responded to your other post. Do not put the prevacid beads in his milk. Milk is alkaline and will degrade the coating around the beads and reduce the effectiveness of the meds. They need the coating to protect them from the acid in the stomach so they can sneak down the GI tract ready to activate and turn of those acide pumps.
PRevacid in this form needs to be given at least 30 minutes prior to his bottle. So sneak in at 6.30 and syringe them in (say in a few mls of water or applejuice) then 1/2 hour prior to the middle of day bottle and 1/2 hour before nightime?GoodluckSeptember 7, 2007 at 12:38 pm #42295Anonymous
InactiveAsk your doc for the solutabs. You can dissolve them and then syringe it in using a medicine dropper to get all the beads in. The beads in the capsule are bigger and will not dissolve to go in with a syringe. They also don’t taste great. The solutabs are strawberry and taste pretty good. Good luck.

InactiveOK, so I got them to change the script to the solutabs but I was mistaken about the dosage. He is getting 15mg once a day. I don’t think that’s enough based on the marcikids calulator and what I’ve read is that the doses should be split up. How do others take it? He is 17 pounds or so.

InactiveIf you can get your doctor to up the prescription, then i would. Otherwise. Try splitting the solutab in half and giving half in the morning and half before bed.
