InactiveHopefully I am posting this under the right category…
My doc had told me that “as soon as Jacob can start solids” the reflux would improve, but I have done a lot of past-posts reading and that doesn’t seem to be the general consensus with Moms, huh? When do you start them? Jacob is 5 months and my doc said to go ahead….I am SCARED! Things are bad enough around here….

Inactiveyep its a bunch of bologna!!! i just tried last week, carrots! its a no go. he was gassy and moaning for 2 days, he was very uncomfortable! our reflux babies are sensitive and need to start solids later than “normal” babies.
solids can actually make things worse if started when theyre not ready.November 10, 2006 at 9:48 pm #17674Anonymous
InactiveI started Aidan at 6 months, he did alright, but I’m not sure id did much to help his reflux. However that being said Aidan had a TON of cereal in his formula until 2 months ago, 3tbs per 4 oz, which really did help his reflux. Now that he’s almost one he eats anything you put in front of him…except cheese..I don’t get that one Ithought everyone liked cheese!!! You could start with one food for a week, just to see how things go? Carrots wreaked havok on Aidan’s reflux so did bananas, but he did well on sweet potatos. You could try him on cereal to start out with, It’s a tough call, you don’t want to start too soon, but then again it’s not good to wait forever!!! My oldest started solids (other than cereal) when he was 7 months (no reflux w/him). Jacob is still little, it wouldn’t hurt if you wanted to wait!

Inactivesorry – i probably should have said “cereals” specifically. does starting cereal make sense at 5 months? i tried adding it to bottles about a month ago and it was a HUGE disaster, let me tell ya.

Inactivewhat formula is he on btw?
my son has had beechnut cereal in his bottles since 1 month old and he has been fine with that.November 10, 2006 at 10:23 pm #17684Anonymous
InactiveWe are stuck in formula h**l right now and I am still trying to find the right one. He has been on Gentle Ease, then Alimentum, then I tried soy. All of them were good for about 5 days and then it went down hill. I am thinking either RTF nutramigen or neocate next. The cereal I gave him was NOT the beechnut (as I did not know about this until after I took him off the other stuff) and was too gun-shy at that point to try another cereal. I just don’t know what to do anymore. I am so upset about this!

InactiveReally Beechnut is so much more sensitive on their stomachs. Gerber has soy and I know some babies just don’t do very well with it. Did you try rice or oatmeal? Rice sometime is harder on their bellies than oatmeal but I think its trial and error as it everything when it comes to reflux babies.

Inactivei would def not jump imto solids until you have this formula issue resolved

InactiveAidan has been on gerber oatmeal since he was about 2 months old. Never had an issue with it, it actually just has the soy lecithin in it. He had issues with the rice cereal though, very hard on his tummy. I tried beechnut once, but it was after he had been on the Gerber for a while, and he didn’t like it, plus the gerber is cheaper, so I’m glad he did ok on it! Aidansmom792006-11-10 22:52:47

InactiveJohanna,
I think this is just another one of those things that just depends on the baby and their individual situation. My little brother had horrible reflux with projectile vomiting. As soon as my mom started him on solids it totally went away. However, that wasn’t the case for my son. I would just try whatever you feel comfortable with. I think she’d be fine waiting if you feel better about it. A lot of people (me too) like to wait until around 6 mo. to start any solids, but sometimes reflux babies with sensitive or underdeveloped systems need to wait even longer. I also don’t really think it would hurt to try some cereal though…see what happens. If she reacts badly, then stop. What happened when you added cereal to the bottle though??November 11, 2006 at 6:13 am #17710hellbennt
KeymasterIf you’re havng so much tummy problems, I’d get everything as settled as you can before adding mroe to the mix…
frpm ‘Groupie Intro’ there’s links to formulas, starting solids etc

InactiveHeather, when I tried him on the rice in his bottle it was because he was doing MUCH better on the prevacid, which we had started a few weeks prior,…but still had a little ways to go (was having some pain)…so the doc said to try rice. Within a day of starting it, it was like we were right back to where we started. He was as worse as ever. I was SO MAD about it! But it was Gerber…I had no idea at the time that Beechnut was better!!!

InactiveI, too, am having problems getting my daughter to accept solids by a spoon. She has been taking cereal in her bottle since 3 weeks old, so it doesn’t appear to be a taste issue, but texture. Solid feedings are horrible… she spits it all out, cries, whines, and clearly tells me she doesn’t want it!! Doc also believes its a texture acceptance issue because we have tried rice, oatmeal, sweet pots and squash. Her Doc also says that she should be getting solid feedings 2 times a day (UGH–once is hard enough!) and if things don’t smooth out by 9 mons, we will consider a “feeding clinic”??? What’s that????? OH MY! Any advise?? Has anyone stopped and started a bit later, or should I trudge along and keep practicing? Help!! I am stressed!!

Inactivechristy-
she is clearly not ready-
my advice would be, do NOT force her. things like that can lead to feeding aversions. i know several moms that are dedicated to breastfeeding and simply do not want to introduce solids until one year of age.November 13, 2006 at 11:55 am #17882hellbennt
Keymasterfrom ‘Groupie Intro’ (first/stickied post in the introduce Yourself Forum) there’s links to starting solids -just scroll down
