InactiveMy son has MSPI and reflux which we had managed on prevacid twice a day and nutramigen thickened with beechnut oatmeal. We just started solids last week, and he did great with green beans, but has been spitting alot with sweet potatoes and carrots. He hasn’t been sleeping well at night or taking good naps during the day and has been throwing up a lot. Could this be a sign of a food intolerance, or is his body just adjusting to the new foods?
For now I’ve just gone back to just his cereal to see if the symptoms get any better. Curious if anyone else has exprienced this.November 7, 2009 at 9:28 pm #64465hellbennt
Keymasterit could be the carotene/orange foods…back off, go back to green beans and try something else…squash maybe or apples or pears or get a ripe (organic) banana or avocado and mash it up w/ a fork & add some formula to get it to how thick he likes it…give each new food a good 4 days…

InactiveI was very slow when we introduced foods… I did 1wk with each new food… I said slow and luckily we didn’t have any problems. I see that your son was a preemie… what is his adjusted age? We waited until 5 months would have waited until 6 months if my son would have been willing.. it may just be that his tummy isn’t ready for solids yet.

Inactivehe was 34 and 6 days so his adjusted age is about 5 months. We’ve been feeding cereal with a spoon for about 2 months now.
I stopped the carrots and fed him just cereal for 3 days and he seemed to improve. We tried peas last night and we’ll probably stick with them for at least 5 days to see how he does. So far so good.

InactiveWe’ve been on peas for 3 days now and he slept for 9 hours straight last night. His spitting up as improved as well. That makes me think that it was the sweet potatoes or carrots that was causing his problems. We will stay away from those for now.
Another thing that I started doing is giving him his prevacid directly in his mouth instead of through a medicine dropper. He is on the solutabs. I started just holding it in his cheek until it disolves and that seems to be helping as well.I am going to give the peas a couple more days then I might introduce a fruit. Any suggestions on what I should try next?November 11, 2009 at 2:37 pm #64511hellbennt
Keymasterpears always ‘seem’ to be ‘safe’ (they’re allowed in the strict diet of a breastfeeding mother who is eliminating built-up proteins to try and determine what, if any, are affecting her baby via her breastmilk)
but, that being said, there seem to always be exceptions to every rule- especially for these GERDlings!November 19, 2009 at 8:47 am #64600Anonymous
InactiveWe’ve done great with applesauce and pears, peas and green beans. We might try some squash next.
There’s not a whole lot of options when it comes to jarred food I’ve noticed, and a lot of the stuff is mixed together. I’ve been sticking with the beechnut brand because that is what my doctor recommended. I am having a hard time finding simple foods for him to try before we dive into the mixed jars.November 19, 2009 at 6:22 pm #64614hellbennt
Keymasteryou can make your own; it’s not as hard as you would think- what other single foods would you like to try?
get a ripe (organic) banana or avocado and mash it up w/ a fork & add some formula to get it to how thick he likes it. -
