InactiveI am just wondering if this is normal. Cooper recently has started to become very stiff at times and then he will make this grunting sound. It has nothing to do with having bm’s or really anything. He does it lying down on his back where he will straighten his legs and arms and grunt and then when he is “standing” he goes into to his “muscle man” pose as we call it where he looks like he is trying to flex his muscles and he grunts. And at times when I go to put him in the sitting position he will not and I mean will not bend his torso. Is this something to be concerned with or is it just a normal thing with babies as they are learning to stand and make different noises? My mom says that it is something that all babies do, but I am just a little concerned.

InactiveBen used to do this and, unfortunately, it was when he was attempting to keep his reflux from coming up. He still will every once and awhile… and it’s usually when he’s eating. He does the muscle man pose (we call it “hulking out”) in his high chair. Sometimes once he burps, he fine again, so maybe it’s a gas thing too?

InactiveConnor does the exact same thing quite a bit. He does display all of the Sandifer’s symptoms too. He flexes every muscle and gets a really serious look on his face. I’ve never thought it was connected with his reflux, but maybe it is b/c his reflux is not controlled right now. Sorry I can’t be of more help, but it’s interesting to hear other babies doing the same things.

InactiveI’m not convinced it is Sandifer’s b/c it doesn’t have anything to do with meal times. It is totally random and I am pretty sure his reflux is under control. He only cries now when he is hungry/sleepy or he teeth are bothering him… but I guess I could be wrong… Hmmmmmm

Keymastersandifer’s wasn’t always related to meal time w/ jonah; his reflux wasn’t necessarily realted to meal time either- for his, it appears it was an immature LES, so he would reflux anytime…

InactiveI have seen babies do this in a playful way, but they would laugh or smile, or at least have a relaxed and happy expression, so you could that tell they were just experimenting with what they could do with their bodies. If he seems stressed or uncomfortable when he’s doing it then I’d be worried, but if he seems happy and playful then it’s probably just a playful baby thing.

InactiveMy son Ian did the same thing at mealtimes and at 4.5 months. Right after he ate, it would appear he was trying to do a bm – lots of grunting /stiffness. Unfortunately it ended up being reflux uncontrolled even though on Elecare and Prevacid at the time. He started vomiting blood at 5 months.
Maybe a call to your GI? Sorry to scare you, but it was traumatic and if I can help you prevent a worse case scenario, its worth it. I’m equally sure it could be normal too though.Oh, and I always found taping for the doctors helped. -
