Success with Carafate?

Hi-

My son is on 22.5 mg Prevacid Solutabs but he still starts screaming when we burp him during a feeding and then won’t go back on the bottle. We have been giving 1 ml of Mylanat Supreme before feedings but it wasn’t helping much. The pedi GI just prescribed Carafate for him today (0.5 ml 4 x day before feedings) which she said would coat his esophagus and heal any irritation. Anyone else use this and have success with it? She said we should see improvement within a few days or else we should call her.

carafate is a great short term solution

we used it w/ jonah when his reflux was at it’s worse

it is not meant for long term use so if things don’t improve then

it’s probably time to increase the prevacid to marci-kids recommended dose (maybe he’s taking marci-kids recommended dose)

We had some luck with the carafate, but I always had trouble timing it correctly, as you can’t give it within a couple of hours of the prevacid…

Carafate seems to help Dagney. She was on it for a short period back around 3 months ago, but is now back on it following an unsuccessful wean. She is on 2ml 3x/day. Since she’s still having some issues, the GI wanted to move up to 4x/day, but that would interfere with the prevacid dose timings, so we’re sticking with 3x/day and hoping that gets her through. I can really tell it works because she would have 1/2 hour naps when we didn’t give it to her, but 1 – 1 1/2 hr naps when we did!

Thanks for your responses! Denise, do you know how far apart the Carafate dose needs to be from the Prevacid dose? I know the GI said they had to be a few hours apart but I’m not sure exactly how far apart and I want to make sure I don’t give it too close to a Prevacid dose. Thanks!
