switching from one med to another–effectiveness

My daughter has been on Prevacid since 7-31. On 8-7 she was prescribed Axid b/c we were seeing no results from the Prevacid. On 8-14 she was hospitalized for failure to thrive. Dealt with a horrible pedi GI doc. She didn’t explain much but proscribed Prilosec. The day after leaving the hospital, she seemed to start eating. I have 3 hypothesis for this (1) she had gone a couple days without eating much allowing the esophagitis to heal some and (2) the prilosec kicked in. I have questions about this 2nd hypothesis. I have heard, correct me if wrong, that prolosec takes 2 weeks to kick in. Is this still the same if she has been on a similar PPI such as Prevacid. Could the Prilosec just take over so that there is no wait period.? (3) the prevacid kicked in at 2 weeks. I have questions about this too. My pedi said she prescribed prevacid vs prilosec b/c it kicks in faster?

So even though teh pedi GI prescribed prilosec, she seemed to do better when we came home from the hospital. I attributed this to the prevacid working, so i gave her prevacid (but i gave it to her 2 x a day instead of once as it was prescribed). But now she has taken a step back and isn’t that interested in eating and fussy when she does. Screaming for about 30 min. vs 1 hour without meds at all.

So i’m not sure what to do. Help??

Also…the doctor prescibed Axis a week after she started Prevacid. The GI in hospital didn’t say anything about this. Am I supposed to be keeping her on it? Do i give it the same time as teh prevacid or prilosec?

You need to give the Axid 4-5 hours away from the prevacid or prilosec. Prilosec in general does take up to two weeks to kick in but being on a ppi may have helped. Some babies do better on one or the other. I would keep her on the Axid until you are sure that you get a high enough dose of prilosec or prevacid and try and get it so you can give more than once a day. Babies matabolize prevacid faster than adults so they need it 2 or 3 times a day. You can take a look at http://www.marci-kids.com and it will explain this better than me. Hope this helps

If you are on enough prilosec and it isn’t doing the trick at all, it makes me wonder if something else is going on. Milk/soy intolerance? What formula is she on? I know she is little but Erythromycin given 3x a day will help empty her tummy and she may feel hungry then. Do you have a new doc? A visit with someone you trust and that will listen to YOU may be needed.
