InactiveMy daughter is 11 months old and is very uninterested in purees and very interested in table food. I wanted to see what other mothers were feeding their children this age. We thought Brianna might have been MSPI, but I think now she has outgrown it. ( Long story, but both she and I have had dairy and it hasn’t seemed to cause the same problems as before.
) But I am still cautious about dairy. I give her chick nuggets, hotdogs, any fruit and green beans (she doesn’t like carrots) and her favorite is bagels (she is a carbo-addict, like her momma
). But I am sure this stuff gets old…any other ideas? She only has two teeth, but she eats like she has 12!November 13, 2006 at 12:17 pm #17884Anonymous
InactiveWow! She’s really eating well for her age. I can’t believe she can eat chicken nuggets with only two teeth!

My little guy just started eating table food at 13 months. His absolute favorite food is whole grain crackers. (I try to avoid white flour as it is addicting for some people and it really does start young. I’ve known plenty of toddlers and pre-schoolers who would eat nothing but crackers, toast, bagels and other white flour foods, so I am trying to avoid this trap with my carb loving kids).
That’s great that she eats fruit!!
Anyway, Myles is just starting out but he loves:
grilled cheese sandwhiches
almond butter and jam sandwiches (almond butter is healthier than peanutbutter…less sugar/salt etc.)
dry cereals (cheerios, puffed wheat and others whole grain cereals)
He’s starting to eat dried fruits and veggies from http://www.justtomatoes.com (I love their products)
My girls used to eat (as toddlers and still do)
All types of fruits, melons, berries and veggies (Myles isn’t yet, but hopefully soon)
pancakes (whole grain of course
)french toast
scrambled eggs (a little cheese can make them a little tastier)
broiled or baked chicken breast
meatballs
Noodles with tomatoe sauce or butter and parmesan cheese. Usually when I make tomatoe sauce I cook it with some ground turkey, beef or veggie meat to add some protein. Also you can add some pureed veggies to the sauce and they will never know.

Pizza (homemade on pita bread, english muffins) or Frozen.
Vegetarian (Morning Star Farms) chick patties, veggie burgers, sausage… (We’re not vegetarian, but it’s nice for some variety and we’re not big meat eaters. Also these products seem to have a good consitency for toddlers, I think).
Ravioli…a big favorite (white flour so we don’t eat it often but they love it).
I think Laura’s intro link has some links for toddler foods…I should check it out myself.

InactiveThanks to you both. Christine, I wanted to ask you about the Almond Butter…I was told to avoid peanut butter until age three, but is almond butter OK? I would love to give Brianna that as I LIVED on PB and J as a child, and know she would love it too! 🙂

InactiveMy daughter was the same way at 11 months!!!
Other finger food ideas:
1. gerber puffs
2. any well-cooked veggie…spinach is a house favorite over here, although I have avoided it lately 🙂
3. cheese (another favorite)
4. toast (in small pieces)
5. mac and cheese (i buy the wheat kind)
I am sure there are others….can’t think of them right now!

InactiveB’s mom,
I never asked the doctor about almond butter, but I’ve never read anything about avoiding it in infants and toddlers, so I’ve always assumed it was fine. Myles sure loves it!! He ate 1/3 of a sandwich tonight!!

InactiveFYI – just remembered that babies under one year should only have eggs yolks (not the whites).

InactiveAidan is also 11 months old (also just 2 teeth!!)and he LOVES frozen cherries (bagged ones from kroger) They are soft even when frozen(no pits or anything) and I cut them up in tiny bites. He also likes frozen mango, another one that is still soft even right from the freezer, and it thaws out VERY fast. Good for teething. Any kind of pasta is right up his alley, loves ravioli (have to overcook it a bit though for him). Black eyed peas, grilled cheese-he’ll eat anything, the other day we were a bit frazzled and I had to give him chic fil a nuggets (the inside, not the fried coating) and he ate 3. Yogurt is a favorite. He wants whatever his older brother is eating, and most of the time, it’s usually something he can eat. He’s eaten meatballs (not tomato based or heavily spiced) loved those, really likes those nasty gerber meat sticks. But I’d have to say that those frozen cherries are tops on his list, he gets them for “dessert” and sometimes for breakfast with a waffle.Aparently he likes ritz crackers, I found out they feed those to his class at Sunday school!

InactiveOH! And that reminds me….they make those mesh bags and you can put anything at all in them…I used to give Isabella (my baby girl) ice cubes in them when she was teething. And pieces of things that I couldn’t just give her due to choking hazard, like apples and grapes. Those things are the greatest….I forget what they are called, but can look it up if you want.

InactiveI’ve always been told to wait until age 2 for any kind of nuts, peanuts, soy, and seafood; and if you have any history of food allergies in your family then wait until age 3.
We just barely started giving Parker nuts butters & nuts (he turned 2 in Sept.)

InactiveJill, the frozen cherries sound great. I’ll have to look for them.
Heather, thanks for the info on nuts….I didn’t know that. Now researchers are actually saying it’s better to give kids these things earlier to avoid allergiies. There was a recent thread about it. It’s one of those things that keeps changing so we’ll probably never really know.
I guess I wasn’t too worried about it because there’s no real food allergies in my family except that my mom is allergic to shell fish. But I think you’re probably right….if there’s a history of food allergies you probably need to be more careful about what you give your children.November 14, 2006 at 3:16 pm #18021Anonymous
InactiveWow, those are great ideas for foods..I do have one of those mesh bags, but Brianna is so funny.,..she wants to be just like the adults, that she won’t eat out of the mesh bag! 🙂 Christine, I ordered some of those just veggie things last night…I think that is a great way to give Brianna variety. You know, I think it is funny about the food recommendations pediatricians give out.. my mom told me that she gave my brother solids when he was one month old because that is what the pediatrician said to do! Go figure
…but he is still alive. 🙂 I think I might try the almond butter and meatballs would be another good one. Thanks again everyone!November 14, 2006 at 5:06 pm #18031Anonymous
InactiveAidan loves the mesh baggie thing as long as there’s a popsicle in it. The poor kid is teething very badly and they’re sugar free. He flips out when he sees them…but tosses the bag down if there’s anything but a popsicle in it!!!!! I had one for austin when he was little and was always making veggie and fruit smoothies (veggies and fruit together, he hated veggies) freezing them in an ice cube tray, and popping one or 2 in the teether for him.

InactiveAnother idea…the baby goldfish! I thought of it while I was feeding them to her today! Finally a subject I can ANSWER vs. ask questions! Ha! Ha!

InactiveB’s mom,
You’ll love the just veggies!! They’re great. My girls love the peas…they won’t eat frozen or canned peas but they go nuts over these!!
About the almond butter, I’ve tried a few brands and some are pretty bland or dry. The best of the ones I’ve tried is the Kettle Roaster brand. I find it at my local health food store. When you get it you’ll want to scrape it all out and put it in big bowl with a tight fitting lid and then mix it thoroughly to get the oil blended well. Since it’s not highly processed like peanut butter the oil tends to rise to the top and you end up with a useless cake of dry almond butter on the bottom of the jar. That’s where the big bowl comes in….it gives you room to mix it up really well. A PITA, I know, but it really will make your almond butter experience much better.
Myles won’t use the mesh bag either. He looks at me like I’m nuts when I give it to him.
