InactiveHello all- Once again, just when you think you have things figured out, and a nice routine starting to emerge…they start acting differently! This might get long, so I apologize in advance-
My thoughts are all over this morning! I don’t know if this has anything to do with her reflux, or it’s teething- Sadie, now 5 mths, has slept through the night since she was 3 months old, swaddled- Well, for the past week, she just won’t sleep through the night- She wakes up by 1:00 am, and if you give her the pacifier, she goes back to sleep- She’ll then lose it about 2 hours later, and you go back in, put it back in, and she sleeps until about 6-6:30 vs. the usual 7-8 am she used to sleep.
She is also chewing her hands a lot, and drooling- But, I can’t see any obvious spots for teeth yet- So, my question to moms who have gone through teething: Does this sound right? is she too young for teething? Is is possible to be teething, and fine most of the day, but sleep worse at night? It’s like she needs comfort at night all of a sudden, and wants her pacifier, when she didn’t need it before-
Also, do you think that giving her the pacifier will just make her addicted to it and not learn to go back to sleep on her own? I feel like if she’s in pain, then I need to let her have that comfort, but if she is just fussy, then I am a little more comfortable letting her try and get herself back to sleep without it- I don’t think it is reflux-related, as she really isn’t crying- but, she wants to suck all the time, and chew on everything-
We also have been weaning her off of swaddling, as she was starting to wake up from struggling to get out of it- So, there is a small chance this is due to that, but I am doubtful because as soon as she has her “bink” she is fine, arms out, etc.

Does this sound like teething to anyone? Or, have your children suddenly stopped sleeping through the night, etc.?
Any helpful advice or stories would be appreciated! thanks again ladies!

InactiveAhhh…the paci dilemna! I’ve asked myself those same questions with all three of my babies.
I think it’s probably best to teach babies to sleep without a nuk, but I am a sucker at 3am so I never could do it. I still get up once or twice a night to give Myles his nuk. I just don’t have it in me to let him cry when I know that’s all he wants. So, I’m probably not the right person to give you advice in this area.

As for teething, she is definitely old enough to be teething. The average age for the first tooth to erupt is six months but it takes weeks, sometimes months for them to break through, so she could certainly be teething. The chewing and drooling are classic signs of teething and they can feel something long before we see anything under their gums.
Maybe try some Tylenol before bed one night and see if she sleeps any better.

InactiveI agree with what Christine said about teething. Brianna is a painfully slow teether, and often we can see the gums getting all white and the drool and all, but it takes weeks for the darn tooth to poke through. Brianna is the same as Saidie in that she is fine for hte most part during the day, but during sleep she has problems. I don’t know if it is becuase there are no distractions at night…they enter that light sleep stage and they feel the pain or what, but her sleep is much worse at night.
As for the pasi thing, Brianna is 16 months and still sleeps with one. But here is what we did. We only allow her to have her passy during nap time. Also, when Brianna was old enough to find her passy on her own (crawling around crib) I stopped going in to her room to give it to her. (She does sleep with about 10 passy’s in the crib so she can find one easily). Her passy is very comforting to her, and as long as she can handle the day (exept for nap time) with no passy, then I am fine for her to keep it for a while. I know not everyone agrees with letting them keep the passy, but I think, reflux is hard enough on LO’s and I don’t want to take away the source of comfort just yet. Good luck and I hope the sleep gets better.

InactiveThanks! I agree, I think it is teething, the more I really look at what behaviors she is showing- She is also coughing more, like she has all that saliva in her throat, and I just read that teething can cause cold symptoms- I know it’s not reflux, as she never did that with her reflux- She is eating solids now, and it just occurred to me that she has been fussing a little bit more when she eats them, and I am wondering if the spoon hurts her mouth- but, when we feed her cold applesauce, she is fine- It is all making a little more sense now!
We pretty much practice the same thing- only her pacifier at nap time, and now, during the night if she needs it. She can’t grab it and put it back in herself yet, but I think we’ll just give in and keep “helping her” until she is old enough to find it. Your story made me laugh, as I can just picture the crib full of binks!
I am going to try infant motrin, and see if that helps. The tylenol I gave her last night seemed to allow her to sleep a little better, but I have heard that motrin lasts longer and works better.
Ah, the fun road of teething! I am happy she is reaching this milestone, but not looking forward to the lack of sleep!
Thanks again ladies!

InactiveShelby suggested putting a cloth diaper through the handle of the pacifier to make it easier for the baby to find it at night. It sounds like a great idea to me.

InactiveHey, I just skimmed through the replies so I apologize if I’m repeating. I just wanted to let you know that Sarah’s sleep at night is AWFUL when she’s teething. We’ve figured out that when she wakes up in the middle of the night it’s either because she is teething or stuffed up.
After trying every possible teething rememdy on the market when Sarah cut her first tooth…I finally figured out that it was aggrivating her reflux (by successfully trying mylanta). I upped her zegerid dosage slightly and she popped her 2nd tooth through without any fuss or complaint…I didn’t even know it was coming. So, keep in mind that her reflux might be aggrivated because of the new tooth (especially if she’s drooling more)
Sorry this is rambling…gott an ansy baby on my hands.
Hope that helps.April 24, 2007 at 7:49 pm #31370Anonymous
InactiveDitto to everything that has been said. Alana still has not teeth but everynow and then the drool increases, she chews frantically on everything, her gums go white etc so I know she is teething. So for a few days her sleep is awful and then all of a sudden she is sleeping through the night again. I think the infant motrin helps though. Also Alana still has her dummy, I still poke it back in on the nights she is unsettled….the other nights it doesn’t seem to bother her to lose it.

InactiveKaelyn stills sleeps with her paci at night. We are getting ready to have the “paci fairy” come once school gets out (so I won’t have to work if it leads to a few sleep deprived nights). As others have said, she only uses it at nap and bed times, and it helped us get through some really rough patches. So, while I’m not looking forward to trying to take it away, I would definitely do it again.

InactiveAdriana started with those same behaviors at 5 months after sleeping good for a couple months. She got her 2 bottom teeth a few weeks later. Teething makes her reflux worse, she eats less, and sleeps horribly. She also uses a paci for naps and bedtime and I get up a few times a night to give it back to her. Fun, fun fun!

Keymasterjonah had his Dewey (he named his pacifier when he was about 12 months old!) until he was 3 & 1/2 and his teeth are FINE

he adored Dewey so much we just couldn’t take it away (only for sleeping!) and I would do it all again…
Ari, however, wanted nothing to do w/ a pacifier, go figure
…as for teething: benedryl on the gums, some orally, hylands teething tablets, let them munch on a little cup of crushed ice, etc…

InactiveWhat really worked nicely for Claire: I would bunch up a clean washcloth and wet part of it and then freeze it. She would much on the frozen portion, but the rest of the washcloth, because it was dry, would soak up all the drool!
