InactiveSo I am sleeping at 10:45 and I here Kierra crying and crying. Bryce (husband)has her, but she is still crying. I am lying there thinking….”good grief already! If I had her she would not be crying by now!” So I get out of bed say “give her to me”. I get her snuggled up, sit in the recliner, give her a bottle and she starts crying again! But this is clearly a pain cry. Instinct tells me to look in her mouth and sure enough a tooth is there!!!!!!!!! Poor baby! So Daddy wasn’t pinching her after all! I gave her Tylenol and slept in the recliner with her until 2:30 then she went down until 3:30 and woke up crying. Then Bryce slept with her in the recliner.
Last night was a repeat of the night before. I am giving her Tylenol, she is too young for Motrin
. Someone suggested teething tablets, but then I read something about not giving her these if she is MSPI.One last thing…it is not one of the typical bottom 2 teeth to come in first. It is one of the canines on the bottom! This is crazy, she needs some relief from pain. Any suggestions?

InactiveOkay I just got off the phone with her sitter and Kierra is miserable. She is arching back through feedings again. Sitter says she is crying while sleeping, she’ll cry a little and then pass out again. I just want to cry. Sleep deprivation is not helping my emotions today. Oh and somehow I need to find the energy, focus and patience to teach my high school students today! Thanks just needed to vent a little more.

I hate teething!! And only 9 weeks old! My heart really goes out to you. It’s true that most babies get the bottom middle teeth (central incisors) first, but I’ve heard of babies getting teeth in unusual order. My son just cut his upper eye tooth and he’s only 6 months old. He doesn’t have his middle upper teeth yet, so when the other eye tooth comes in he will look like a baby vampire!I wish I had some teething advice for you. Tylenol doesn’t work very well for my little guy either. And when they are so young like your little girl, it’s really hard because they can’t even hold onto teethers or wet rags to soothe their gums. My first daughter was an early teether like your’s. I remember how frustrating it was becuase she was so little and it seemed so unfair. On the bright side, she was done teething much earlier than most babies so we could put it behind us.
Lots of moms here say that teething makes reflux worse. Maybe that’s why she is struggling today with the sitter. Has she been doing well on her medication up until now?
I sure hope she’s feeling better soon. Wish I had some words of wisdom for you.
Hang in there.March 30, 2006 at 8:36 pm #4983hellbennt

InactiveOh boy – those canines can kill (so I’ve heard) and that is really
early. Perhaps Sarah (Isaacsmom) can help – I know her son teethed
really early too. In the meantime, you may want to try the Hylands.
They don’t aggravate MSPI per se – only if she is lactose intolerant.March 31, 2006 at 2:01 am #4994Anonymous
InactiveWe HATE teething around here, and I truly feel your pain. Hang in there and buy some Hyland’s Teething Tablets and Hyland’s Teething Gel…..you can find them at health food stores, some grocery stores, and some pharmacies, like Rite Aid, depending on where you live. My son is pretty severely MSPI and didn’t react to the Hyland’s, thank goodness. They are a saving grace.
Also, it’s not just moms who say reflux is worse when teething, it’s the docs too. The teething makes the reflux ten times worse. So, hang in there, and when this teething passes, hopefully she will get back to where she was. Was her reflux stable before? It could also be that Pepcid isn’t a strong enough drug for her. She may need a ppi, like prevacid, prilosec, or zegerid. ARound two months was when my son turned from happy spitter, to raging refluxer.
Good luck and let us know how things go.

InactiveAnne – we are on a ppi, Prevacid 7.5mg daily. Her reflux did seem better, but it is back full force and she has halfed her daily milk intake. I slept on the couch with her last night and she finally slept well. However, she is extremely congested now. I remember my older daughter getting congested during teething. But I think it is now a cold b/c her snot is green.
Thanks for the Hylands teething tips. I will get some today.
I have already been babywearing. It is a lifesaver for myself and her sitter as well. I have an awesome pouch from http://www.Zolowear.com I saw it on the Today Show when I was on bed rest.

For now, I guess we will just camp out on the couch to get her through her pain. (The couch is safest for us since our 3 yr. old sleeps with us. She firmly believes in sleeping across the bed to form an H between us.)

InactiveThat sounds like a pretty small dose of Prevacid. You may want to check the PPI dosing info at MARCI-kids.com. Many doctors under dose infants because they are not aware that babies need higher doses of PPI’s than adults and they need to take this medication 3 times daily instead of once because they metablolize and eliminate the drug 3 times faster than adults.
Here’s the link http://www.marci-kids.com/
That’s funny about your three-year old!!March 31, 2006 at 2:36 pm #5056Anonymous
InactiveMy GI wanted to start with a small dose and then up it as needed. I think the thought is to start with the smallest amount and if that works then great. However, I did argue this dosage and they did not budge. So I will try it for a full 2 wks and if I do not see improvement I will argue the point again. Thanks for your post.

InactiveThanks for the shout out Karen! Yes Isaac started getting teeth really early too! I will tell you though once you get through the first teeth the next don’t seem as bad. Teething on objects at that young of an age is laughable and the only things that Isaac would teeth on were my finger that had a burp cloth on it it and a pacifier (playtex makes it and it is called ortho something and is made for teething). The eye teeth coming first is particularly rough and that is what my nephew got first too! You can put orajel on the nipple of the bottle and that will help her to be able to drink her bottle but the orajel is very temporary. You can also try tylenol about a half hour before you anticipate a feeding (though when they are young this is a little hard). The hylands teething tablets work wonders on them! If you are having a hard time getting her to sleep give her 3 of them and that really will help her fall asleep! Isaac is still mspi (just failed a milk trial) and has no problem with the tablets.
Teething ruins the most controlled reflux. I would just wait it out on an increased dose of his medicine. In my experience as soon as this round of teething is over the dose will be ok again. You can try some mylanta in the waiting time. I used the swing alot and Isaac loves music both would distract him from the teething. Also if it is warm enough a trip to the park can distract them for a while.
I hope that those teeth come through quickly! I hope I have helped a little bit. Now I need to take my own advice b/c Isaac’s molars are coming in.
