InactiveI talked to the pediatrician today and he wanted to know if we are seeing any improvments on prevacid. I told him no, if anything, I think things are getting a little worst but today we are on day 4 only. He wants to have Gavin’s stool tested. He wants to get stool samples over 3 days and test them for blood. He said in some extreme cases even breast milk is not well tolerated by some babies and we have to go to somethign that is more easily digested like neocate. I am off dairy now and want to wait to see if there is any improvments. I don’t really want to switch Gavin to any formula but if he is really in pain because of something in my breat milk, then so be it.
Please those who have switched their kids to this formula, how was the MSPI diagnosed? Was it through the stool test?January 7, 2008 at 5:58 pm #47057hellbennt
KeymasterI have a bit to say…
first of all, you need to give the prevacid a chance- it takes up to 2 weeks before you see results- it was day 12 for Jonah.also, are you giving it correctly, is it a good dose?as for blood in the stools- this doesn’t necessarily mean you have to quit breastfeeding…if you think it’s something in your diet, I highly recommend doing the Dr. Sears Elimination diet. this way you will know for sure IF and what you’re eating might be affecting your baby. it may or may not be your diet.if you’re eliminating dairy, there is ‘hidden’ dairy as well- ingredients like whey, casin, etc…please skim through this post https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=2697&PN=1&TPN=1 & the MSPI forum & the breastfeeding forum and the Elimination Diet forum…also, if you’re eliminating dairy you might as well go ahead & eliminate soy as well (the ‘s’ in MSPI)…that’s why you might just want to go ahead with the elimination diet…an EXCELLENT thread to read is this- it’s all about switching to elemental formulas (like neocate or elacare) from breastfeeding:Misconceptions about how Neocate & Elecare work: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=6013January 7, 2008 at 8:14 pm #47064Anonymous
InactiveI was going to suggest trying the TED too before you stop breastfeeding. I did this for several months. TOTALLY SUCKED, but SO worth it in the end!

InactiveI totally regret quitting b/c we fought my son to take Neocate, but I was totally uneducated and my doc suggested it and so I went with it desperate for relief for my son. I would say try TED and see if it helps, BM is best for your baby and if you have tried that and it doesn’t work for you THEN got to a plan B. If you haven’t even tried TED, I would suggest it. It truely sounds like you want to continue bf’ing.

InactiveJust thought I’d share my Neocate story.I had to put my daughter on Neocate for the reason of a milk-protein “allergy.” I have twins and did not breast feed, but from what I understand (and what is confirmed in that link posted by hellbennt), she could not have done breast milk, either. By her third week after birth, she had started developing collitis. We did not know that initially, and tried her on Soy formula, then Nutrimigen (which most infants do fine on if they have a “milk allergy,”) and then at three+ months old, Neocate. That is what finally did the trick.Granted, we still have Reflux and some colic we’re dealing with, plus behavioral stuff (won’t go to sleep without a huge fight) because she’s used to being held. We held her to soothe the pain from the collitis. She’d been such an easy baby! Now we’re dealing with that end of things. -
