Inactiveif your LO is on it.
I have had it witht he prevacid- my dr wont up the dose, and we have a gi appt at the end of this month. besides not really seeming to be enough/working- i am so tired of making him scream and cry while waiting the 30 mins.please let me know what your experiences with zegerid have been!July 13, 2010 at 2:53 pm #66685hellbennt
Keymasterif your dr won’t up the dose, then I’m curious if s/he will up the dose w/ zegerid?
zegerid is prilosec w/ other ‘stuff’ so that it’s a stable compound/liquid you can administer to your baby at any time (w/o timing meals)another choice is bufferbabies which is also a way to make either prevacid or prilosec into a stable compound/liquid that you can give at any time- w/ bufferbabies you get the prevacid or prilosec rx, buy the bufferbabies, mix it up at hime…
people here have loved both zegerid and bufferbabies…

can you increase the dose yourself via bufferbabies and changing your rx from solutabs to capsules and then ‘supplementing’ to increase the dose by buying prevacid OTC? cannot tell you to self-medicate your baby…

Inactivemy dr said she would do the 20 mg of zegerid. she was hesitant to rx it though cuz she wa aware of pharmamcies not compounding it right, so i told her about bufferbabies ( she was familiar with caracream ). i thought the bufferbabies was for zegerid too?
so let me get this straight- do I HAVE to have the prevacid/prilosec rx if i can just buy it over the counter? is the otc a capsule with the little beads inside, like the packets??if i buy the buffer babies, do i need proof of a rx?my dr was willing to do the buffer babies, but felt it would be a waste of time if i didn’t mix it right, etc…July 13, 2010 at 9:51 pm #66689hellbennt
Keymasteras far as I know, the pharmacist does not compound the zegerid, YOU do…
it’s a powder packet…w/ the drug prilosec in it- you add water and a buffer- mylanta or quick dissolve tums (you can do a search)bufferbabies is a liquid that you make, too, only it doesn’t have the drug- YOU add the prilosec OR prevacid

Inactiveso bufferbabies is the same thing as adding the water and a buffer?
bufferbabies i can use OTC prevacid?zegerid OTC i can use mylanta?I guess what im getting at is do I NEED the rx versions of the ppi at all??riley has his next appt on the 20th, so i kinda wanted to get going on something else, so i could either say SEE!!! or realize that the 15mg prevacid solutab, while not great, was better than nothing…July 14, 2010 at 9:25 am #66692hellbennt
Keymasteryou do NOT need a rx for bufferbabies…as far as I know…they are selling you the kit to use w/ either prilosec or prevacid – where you get it is your business

call them to find out what you need- they are great!
personally, I’d stick w/ the prevacid as most ‘start’ w/ prilosec and then ‘move on’ to trying prevacid….zegerid DOES require an rx, because the drug, prilosec, is already IN it.
if you can get the rx you need/want, then it’s an option, as many love it.July 20, 2010 at 6:50 pm #66743Anonymous

^^^^ Laura is right about this. YOU will be mixing either zegerid or buffer babies.
You DO NOT have to have an rx to use buffer babies BUT BUT BUT most people find it is MUCH CHEAPER to have your doctor rx omeprazole capsules then to buy the omep OTC…Know what I mean?Zegerid OTC with CaracreamZ is the most cost effective version of BB available but they are all reasonable (with zegerid, prevacid, and prilosec all having coupons each week in the Sunday paper). We have done both zegerid 40mg packets AND buffer babies with Prilosec OTC and LOVE LOVE LOVE both of them. PM me if you have any other questions!July 23, 2010 at 3:11 am #66772Anonymous
InactiveAmy— I tried to PM you but it said your box if full 🙂 🙂 Here was my message below:
Hi Amy…
I’ve been searching and going through old posts to try to figure out if it is better to use Zegerid or Buffer Babies. My older son was on Zegerid as an infant as well- 4 years ago- and this must have been before they figured out it needed more buffer with mylanta. I was still much happier with the zegerid at that time than I was with our other options, but he did have some trouble with throwing it up when he was really young.
I just received a prescription for Prevacid solutabs for my 7 week old baby and I don’t want to go through the same thing I did last time around trying to figure out how to get those stupid little beads into him!
I saw that you have used both Zegerid and BB— I’m curious to know which you’ve liked better and why. I’m desperate to start something ASAP b/c zantac is not helping— waiting to see Ped GI but don’t want to wait to start meds— pediatrician I know will not know much about either of these.
thanks so much!!!

InactiveSorry Robyn! I cleared my inbox!
Zegerid and BB are essentially the same…as they were created by the same person. They each allow you to dose it WITH a bottle and not deal with the empty stomach followed by a meal 30-60 min later you have to follow with delayed release meds like prevacid. I think zegerid is probably a better option if you have good insurance and can get the rx for CHEAP. BB is usually something families are “forced” to use because their doctors are ill-informed about PPIs and dosing so they have to take matters into their own hands. For us, zegerid would have been the cheaper option (at only $10 per box) BUT we were already established on BB and doing GREAT by the time I convinced my pedi to rx zegerid and I was scared to rock the boat b/c Emma was soooo happy on BB.Zegerid 40mg rx packets STILL need the added buffer of mylana or tums.Zegerid OTC need CaracreamZ and water. (caracream has the buffers in it)The other thing that I personally liked better about zegerid rx than BB is that it is stable for longer. With zegerid I would take a HUGE dosing syringe and mix up several DAYS worth of doses at a time. Each BB dose can only be mixed together for 24 hours before it becomes unstable so each day I have to get the doses for JUST that day. (You have two bottles with BB…an A and a B…you mix those together to create your dose but the A and B are what can only be mixed for 24 hours) I’ve gotten used to it now and it’s not a big deal, I just missed being able to do several days at a time. Also, if you have issues with getting high enough doses and you want zegerid, tell your doc that the FDA states that once a zegerid packet is opened it must be used within an hour. This isn’t true, the FDA just has to be careful. So if your doc only rx’s 10mg but you know your LO needs 30mg you have the flexibility because you’re getting the “luxury” of using an entire 40mg packet each day…even though the doc will think you’re doing 10mg and throwing the rest away. Make sense?Let me know if you have any other questions. I’m sorry I’m so scattered in my thoughts! Really, they are both great choices! Best of luck! Keep me posted!July 23, 2010 at 9:08 am #66774Anonymous
InactiveBoth my dss’ are currently on Zegerid 4mg powder packets made w/ Tums Quik Paks & we LOVE them. In the past we’ve been on Prevacid solutabs, Prevacid compounded solution, Prevacid capsules w/ pureed apples, Prevacid capsules made w/ Buffer Babies… anyway, Zegerid is my favorite by far!!! Also, the script is normally $50/month w/ my insurance but Zegerid has a $30 off coupon on their website that I print off each month for each boy’s refill so we save $60!!!
Hope that helps!

InactiveAmy and Erin… Thanks for you replies!!!!
We used Zegerid last time around b/c of the timing issue and at the time, Caracream/BB was not available—- I HATED trying to figure out how to get those medicine balls into Isaac!
Silas has gotten really loose stools with using the Mylanta— which was why I wondered about the BB. And I worried that by adding Tums/Mylanta I would be adding more unnecessary “medicine”. Do you know if BB uses same stuff that is in Mylanta or Tums? I did talk to Dave from RefluxSolutions yesterday but hadn’t thought of that question yet… he’s not there until Monday.
Thanks again so much for the quick responses and all the support from this group!!!! I swear in times like this I don’t know what I’d do w/out this forum!

InactiveAmy will probably have a lot more to say on this but here’s my input…
BB’s 1st ingredient is corn syrup solids & although many babies do okay w/ that, mine are not :(. My kiddos also didn’t do well w/ the Mylanta added (made them more gassy, bloated, etc) so that’s why we do Zegerid w/ the Tums Quik Paks. There are some ingredients in the Tums QP that I worried might bother them (the coloring, flavoring & maltodextrin) but they both do very well & my 3rd ds started on it @ 3 or 4 wks old.

InactiveOh also, Amy had told me a while back that they do make a corn-free BB but I emailed Dave about it (2x) & never got a response so I can’t speak for that.

I’m not sure about CaracreamZ, if this is something you must purchase in addition to the zegerid or, if this actually is part of the OTC zegerid…
