InactiveI don’t know what it means – probably they just felt pretty tight in the womb and they like the feeling of some pressure against their bodies. Some babies stop needing the pressure much sooner than others… but i do feel that some babies with sensory issues seem to want that pressure for longer, which is why they make all the weighed products for sensory integration.

InactivePhysical therapy – the PT was here today. I think he is also going to be pretty good. Young guy, seemed patient and seemed like he knew what he was doing. Matthew smiled at him a few times but when the PT held him, it was a different story!! HA ha.
So, he saw Matthew walk and bending down to pick up tiny toys and getting back up again (with no hand help) and saw him on his back and rolling and a bit on his tummy, pressing up with his arms. he said Matthew looks really good – he said he is certain that he can crawl but what he is lacking is endurance, because he is just 1. not used to certain movements and 2. muscles are not strong enough to support him for long.
As he is not going to be want to do tummy time, he showed me a way of holding him that is supposedly equivalent to tummy time. It is pretty weird and Matthew did not like it and if anyone is interested i can kind of explain it, but he said it worked the same muscles and we need to start slow and get him used to it…. it is going to be fun!
Then he showed me an exersice to stretch the muscles in his back, when he is lying down, so he feels the need to come up to sitting from lying.
Then he showed me another exercise to help with leg disassociation for crawling (he already has it for walking but it is not showing up when he is on his tummy, he is disorganized and does not know how to move his legs).
That’s it… if anyone is interested, let me know and i can post what we do in PT… i don’t think there are many kids here who are in PT, so don’t want to bore you all! (Heather i think you were working with Bryce on some PT stuff??) let me knwo

InactiveSounds like it went really well – I’m glad he seems so good and that Matthew
seems to like him. Hope it continues to go well!

InactiveThanks for the update Thais. Sounds like you got a good PT. Good luck.
Laura, as for the pressure… Like Thais said, it is common for babies to enjoy pressure as they are so tightly packed when they are in the womb. That’s common for all babies. Then there are babies who have some SI (sensory integrative) dysfunction. For those babies (and children) it goes beyond the normal desire for pressure. Various theorists in this area have found that deep touch and pressure calm the nervous system, and have a calming effect on children who are often wound up or who have a hard time with sensory processing. In the same way, they’re found that light touch, for many of these kids, can cause neurons to fire in such a way that activates the nervous system. Many kids with SPD or sensory issues, can’t stand this kind of touch.
(Sorry to hijack Thais!)
