InactiveI’m so glad to hear that Matthew is doing so well these days, so I thought I’d see how you got him to turn around in the sleep department. Did you do anything lately (I know you mentioned CIO in another post, but not sure if that was a long time ago, or recently) to help him start sleeping or is it just the fresh Spain air?
Lately Hailey’s sleeping seems even worse- impossible to put to sleep, and up on and off during the night at least 5 times. After 15 months of no sleep, it’s really starting to wear me down and my patience is wearing thin!

InactiveOh Lori
I am so sorry that you are still dealing with no-sleep. You must be exhausted because i am still exhausted and he has been a great sleeper lately…
The CIO was in NY, but it has definetely contributed to the better sleep. He used to wake up at 4am or 5am and we knew that there was no way he was up for the day…i used to have the monitor noise on (we also have the video because we thought it would help when we fed him at night with pump) and i used to just wake up at every little sound he makes. Then i decided it was enough, so i turned the sound down which means i only hear him when he is crying. I donĀ“t go to him (or did not use to) and sometimes he would cry for an hour and sometimes just 5 minutes. I could just watch in the monitor that he was alright (sometimes he manages to take his tube out of his Tshirt)…. i think he got used to it and the crying became less intense.
I think that then he got the double ear infection and he was on antibiotics and my ped here recommended i give him some antihistamine to help him settle and sleep and that helped him a lot for a couple of days. Then we got to Spain and his ears were so swollen he was back in pain and another ped gave me some meds to put in his ears but also some antihistamine to sleep for a couple of days (i know it sounds crazy for all of you in the US prob, but it is pretty commom practice here)… and then after that i guess he got in the rythm?? Also, we are by the sea side and i think he is just more tired than he was before.
Unfortunately, it has really just happened overtime i think. He is a much less fussy kid, less nervous, does not need to move around so much anymore and does not throw up… so i think he was in pain somehow?? I was pretty sure he was not but now looking back, everything coincides with him not vomiting.
Can you ask the doctor for something for Hailey to help her sleep? I know that there are babies who take melatonin and i know that Darshani gives Abi (not Nitara) some supplements that work really well…

InactiveOur peds commonly suggest the antihystamine also to help when they have fallen into bad habits or just to get them back on track. Some peds are much more conservative, but ours also believe this is an appropriate thing to do to help them sleep.

InactiveThe antihistamine doesn’t really help her for some reason (if I can even get it it in her). Thanks for the advice though. I’ll ask Darshani about it as well.

InactiveSometimes it has the opposite effect on some kids….. My friend’s child gets wired any time they give her the Benadryl…..
Sorry it doesn’t help, Lori, as sometimes it is our life saver here…..
Does the Peractin that I keep reading about have the same effect? I think that’s an antihystamine also….

InactivePeriactin typically makes them very sleepy, but isn’t considered safe for use in children in Canada. Figures, because it might be able to address two of our problems, the not eating and the not sleeping.
I don’t think either of my kids react normally to those kinds of things. Sarah get wired on valium!

InactiveThanks Laura. I’ll check it out. How’re your little ones doing?

Keymaster[jonah is great- he’s in preschool
so I’m going to enjoy my babymoon & do mommy/baby stuff with ari: fingers crossed, holding my breath, knock on wood: he seems fine (phew!)- I keep thinking I see reflux signs (he glerps & cries out & does some things I’d consider to be sandifer type symptoms), but then he’ll be ok within a few minutes, where when jonah would show the same signs, he’d shriek/howl unconsolably for hours on end…ari’s diapers are ‘normal’ so no mspi (jonah wasn’t mspi either)- I think he just has a normal newborn immature digestive track & I just have NO clue as to what ‘normal’ is

InactiveGlad to hear it! Enjoy your time off with Ari.

InactiveI wish they would allow you some periactin. From what the ped here told me, not all antihistamines will make them drowsy or sleepy… it is like adult medicine i believe (I have metal allergies and soem of them i could not take while working and others were fine). Spain is def a country where people enjoy their sleep i think (LOL) because all peds recommend the same med… i will look it up tomorrow for you… all my moms friends even have given it to their children etc….it is really well known here! What Darshani gives Abi is a herbal remedy i guess pretty much like what Laura has posted.
Ann Marie – glad to hear your ped is onboard with sleeping….last time i went to the ped here and Matthew had the swollen eardrums the ped looked at me and said it was more important to treat me than to treat Matthew (I guess i looked horrible) and he said the only way i could rest was if he slept….!!

InactiveLori,
I have no new ideas but lots of sympathy. I hit a MAJOR wall at 17 mos when I just couldnt’ BELIEVE I was still waking every 1.5-2 hours….it was so depressing. that was when we started our chiropractor visits, took all gluten out of Lucas’ diet, and began probiotics. Did you ever try probiotics? I can’t remember!
