InactiveLanden is so gassy! I’ve tried rice and he was really gassy so Sunday I changed to oatmeal and he is still really gassy! Is it too soon to assume the oatmeal is what is doing it? it’s been 3 days!
I am wondering if I should just go back to liquid feedings. We saw a GI yesterday and he was diagnosed with severe silent reflux and is on 15mg solutabs which i break in half and give 2x daily so 7.5 mg 2x per day starting today. I wonder if it will soon be ok to stop thickening. He just can’t seem to tolerate cereal yet! He is only 8 weeks old. Has anyone else had this problem? I just feel like I cannot win with this situation. Without thickened feeds he’s bad. With cereal he’s really gassy! What GIVES?

Inactivemany babies cannot tolerate any grains until between the age of 1 and 2. they do not make an enzyme called “amalyse” (sp?) to digest grains properly.
there are other thickening options like simply thick you could try.

InactiveYou could also try thickening with baby food bananas. My OT suggested this to us and she said it’s something they do with the NICU babies who have reflux. Just an idea. We used to use 1/2 tsp per oz to start.

InactiveYour baby is definitley not unusual in not being able to handle cereal yet. That’s why the AAP doesn’t reccommend starting solids (including cereal) until six months. But don’t feel bad about it – many of us have tried thickening for our reflux babies and for some it works, for others it makes things worse.
Hopefully the Prevacid will make him feel much better soon.

InactiveIf thickening is causing him more distress I would try the other options to thicken. Or else just keep him upright as much as possible and elevate the bed. The Prevacid helped a lot with Adriana’ s actual refluxing (silent) even though it isn’t designed to do that.

InactiveI think it might be a bit too early for the cereal yet too. We had to keep Addy upright at ALL times until she was about 7 months. Her bed is still elevated now.

KeymasterI’ve never really understood thickening for silent reflux
–personally I’d try no thickening and see what happens?
is he aspirating? is that why you’re thickening?
does he need the extra calories?

InactiveYou can try thicken up, I get it @ the pharmacy. It’s $6.99 CDN.
Also, I was @ the dr’s the other week and they recommended YoBaby yogurt if your baby can handle it so that they do develop all that good bacteria in the gut.

InactiveOh, just saw that your baby is only a couple months old. I wouldn’t do cereal quite yet if u can get away with it…& when u do give it, try organic brown rice.
& nm about the yogurt either lol. The thicken up is great & we use infacol for gas. Works awesome.
