InactiveMy son has recently switched to Neocate and we finally have no blood in his poop. However, his reflux is terrible now. We tried rice and he’s definitely allergic/intolerant and then we tried simply thick and his stomach got really upset, he got really gassy, and he wouldn’t eat. Is there anything else to thicken with?
Has anyone had any success with Reglan? The Dr said that’s the only other option to help him out. The side effects look terrible and I’m really scared to try it. But, Chase can’t sleep and is so uncomfortable. He’s already taking 30 mg of Prevacid and Zantac in between doses. Any ideas?

Keymasterreglan has worked for those with known DGE (delayed gastric emptying). There is a test to determine if your child has this. Unless your child has had a test that shows DGE, I personally would not try reglan. Again, it has helped many who have had DGE diagnosed…
unfortuantely, if your son’s mspi/allergy was so severe that there was blood in his stool, my guess is that he has a very sensitive digestive system and that nothing other than something like simply thick would help
…you can try a soy-free brand of cereal like beechnut or a brand from a healthfood market- you can try milk & soy free oatmeal or barley- unfortunately it’s trial & error & my ‘educated’ guess is that he might not tolerate these either, but I guess the only way is to try?March 5, 2006 at 5:14 am #3057Anonymous
InactiveJust keep in mind that the Neocate will take a bit of time to work because the body needs to flush out all antibodies it had accumulated from previous formula.
You could try cereal… why are you saying no to rice? How long did you try it for? I am telling you because it takes some time for babies to adapt to new foods. Matthew always seemed like he was intolerant to whatever he tried, but then after a week or 10 days he would be fine. If i had not listened to my doctor, we would be eating nothing because he was so uncomfortable, with gas etc etc… adn it was just his body adjusting… I had no idea what it all meant and my ped asked me to stick to it and i did…

InactiveThais, I guess I can stick it out with the rice for a little while. His eczema came back on his face, his diaper area is red, and he has that really explosive gas again. But no blood yet. Did this happen to you and then eventually disappear?
Laura, thanks for the info on the reglan. I will definitely get that test done before trying it.

We had gas and a really really red bottom but we have never had excema… that may def be a sign then of something! What about trying some other cereals… some gluten free ones?

Keymasterjust make sure the cereals you try are milk and soy free…(not sure if gluten matters per se, but I do know that gerber brand has soy and I do know that beechnut is soy free…) also, like I said above, it is not unheard of for a baby to not be able to handle any grain for awhile, regardless of milk/soy/gluten/etc…

InactiveWhat form of Prevacid are you using? A compound? Solutabs? As always, I would recommend that you try to get a script for Zegerid, which goes to work much faster and can be given without regard to mealtime, and is reliably stable.

InactiveHe’s on solutabs right now. I asked about Zegerid but my ped GI doesn’t prescribe that. We have an appt with Dr. Kirschner for Apr 10th (you gave me her name) and will hopefully switch at that time. I’m going to also take in some info to our ped next week and see if she’ll prescribe it, but I’m doubtful.

InactiveHi Shannon,
It sounds like Chase (love the name was between that and Carter for the one on the way!) may be really sensitive to foods and thickeners, that Prevacid solutabs might really be affecting him from the aspertime, lactose, or flavoring that’s in them. I know he is small and it would be a really big pain, but I would ask for the capsules and just give the beads, so you could rule out any of the extra stuff in the med that could be bothering him.
Not sure if or how that would work, but I would be suspicious of the solutabs because you have eliminated everything else and he is still uncomfortable.
Hang in there!!!

InactiveThanks for the advice Ann Marie. My husband said we can try his capsules today, so I’m going to give it a try. I had not thought about that.
