Can someone please tell me how the Prevacid is supposed to work if I can only get one ounce of formula in my daughter Alison??? This day is horrible. She’s only had 2 ounces of formula since 11 PM last night. She is 10 weeks old and 8 lbs. We just started the Prevacid on Monday so I know I need to be patient but she is crying from hunger and refusing her bottle so I’m on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Not to mention the fact that she’s a twin and I have to spend all my time taking care of her so I feel like I’m neglecting my other daughter… Someone please tell me it gets better.

It does! Hang in there! It takes somewhere around 2 weeks for the prevacid to kick in fully, then you will probably notice a huge difference! Have you tried any Mylanta Cherry Supreme to help soothe her stomach? I know it has helped Micheal tremendously. Also I highly suggest baby wearing. I did this with Michael until we had things under control, it was the only way I could do anything else during my day. Things also get better when they start to sit up and crawl. She won’t be on her back so much! Do you have a baby swing? I used a swing and a Baby Neptune. That usually gave me about 30 minutes to pay a little more attention to my 3 year old. The forum is wonderful and you will no doubt get TONS of useful information. Like I said, hang in there it will get better!

Thanks, I’m wearing her as I type this! I would love to put her in the swing but it makes her throw up.

How much Mylanta do you give?

….it’s true that her dose of Prevacid should be followed in 30 minutes by a full meal, but try not to panic yet. My son was eating next to nothing when he first started Prevacid and it still worked for him. Alison is still getting some of the full effect of the medicine even if she isn’t eating much yet. As she begins to feel better she will begin to eat more and the medicine will work better and better. This is what happened with my little guy.

Are you thickening her formula? The added cereal would increase her meal size a little. You might try that at least for now.

I know what you mean about feeling like you are neglecting your other child. I don’t have twins but I have a 2 year-old and a 4 year-old who for the first few months of my son’s life they were basically on their own. They got fed and changed, but that was about it!! I felt terribly guilty, but what could I do? A baby with reflux is a big challenge. Thankfully, yes, it does get better!!

Hopefully Alison will be feeling better soon and you will be able to divide your time more evenly between the two of them. Until then is there anyone who can lend you a hand?

what about zantac or pepsid? do you have any of that? I’d give that, spacing it at least 2 hrs, if not more, from the prevacid doses…

I would check her prevacid dose and make sure it’s ‘high’ enough…

what formula is she on? are you breastfeeding?

Are you putting the prevacid in the formula? That works for zantac, but not usually for prevacid. Please disregard if you’re not.

Ok, gave her 1 ml Mylanta before the last bottle and she drank 3 ounces – yay! It’s all about the small victories. Can I give her that much before each bottle??

I try to give her Zantac too but I thought it couldn’t be within 4 hours of Prevacid dosing so I was having a problem fitting it in since I’m dosing 3x during the day.

Does the Mylanta interfere with either the Zantac or Prevacid?

you can even mix mylanta & zantac- but I wouldn’t give the mylanta near the prevacid…so ‘treat’ it like zantac…also, we always gave the zantac & PPI 2hrs seperate w/o any problems- my ped gi said it’s ok…you could try this if the 4hr timing isnt sorking- the PPI dose most likely is too low for you to be having all of this difficulty

If the swing makes her throw up, try a leap frog bouncy seat. It has toys that hang down, plays music, and has colorful lights with pictures that move in time with the music. This also keeps them at a pretty good angle. I used this a lot as well, especially while doing the dishes or cooking. I had it in the kitchen, I could talk and sing to him while I worked.

I have read here on the forum that you should use Cherry Supreme Mylanta because of an ingredient interaction. I am sure the link that Laura sent you will have that info.

BAbywearing saved our lives, and our arms…..our son hated the swing but loved the bouncey seat… Make sure to have her sleeping on an incline or in teh bouncey or something where she’s not flat. It took twelve days to really see concrete results from prevacid for us. Twelve looooooooong days.

I would seriously recommend looking into zegerid if you are having trouble with the scheduling of meds or with the effectiveness of the prevacid. Not all insurance covers it, but it can be given irregardless of when the baby has eaten or not eaten or what. In other words, you don’t have to time it AT ALL and yet it’s still effective. I am glad the Mylanta worked! It has saved us many times from insanity ! We were always told to give mylanta 2 hours away from prevacid though sometimes that was hard! I hope she is feeling better soon!
