Throwing up through nose, clogging airway?? Help

Does anyone elses baby throw up and it comes out there nose as well.. my little man does this and it clogs his airway and he stops breathing.. i had to call 911 the other day because i couldnt get him breathing again.. i use the nasal aspirator to suck it out but sometimes it dont really work.. im so scared that something bad is going to happen.. i really need help. Hes been to the doctor a million times, recently he seen a GI specialist and they ran a million test and everything came back normal except he has a milk/soy protein allergy.. so he has been on Elecare formula for 1 week and 3 days… He is still throwin up so much… does this formula maybe take a long time to work or is he goin to just keep puking and choking like this??? He is also on .7ml of zantac 3 times a day.. wich in my opinion duz nothing to help the puking… we tried prevaid and he couldnt tolerate it, it gave him stomach pains and diarea… Doctor recomended reglan, but after just one dose he screamed and screamed in pain and plus iv heard way to much bad stuff about reglan so i never gave it to him again… Im so scared he is goin to quit breathing for good .. but the doctors act like there is nothing left to do and im just over reacting and i need to just deal with it… Can anyone out there recomend anything or at least just tell me they had this same issue with the choking and that it will all be ok… oh and cereal isnt an option.. the doctors said absolutely NO cereal in the bottle this young… Please help.. i dont want something to happen to my little man… Any advice or stories are very much appreciated…

I’m so sorry you are going through this. I’m sure you must be terrified. My son did puke into his nasal passages quite a few times, but never enough to stop him from breathing.

As far as the formula. It can take quite awhile for the milk/soy proteins to clear his system, so yes, keep with it for a while. Most moms say they see a difference at around the 2 week mark. Is he throwing up more now that he is on the Elecare or is it about the same?

Also, you’re right about the Zantac doing nothing for the puking. And it really isn’t supposed to. It’s only to help with the acid pain, as are PPI’s. Does he seem to be in pain from the reflux? If so, I would look into putting him back on a PPI, as most moms seem to find that Zantac really doesn’t cut it. I know you said that you tried Prevacid, but have you given the other meds. a thought??? Prilosec or Zegerid?

Unfortunately, there’s not a whole lot you can do with the vomitting. Keep him elevated. Is his bed elevated? Also, thickening his formula might be a thought. Since you aren’t to do formula, you can try other methods like Thick It or Simply Thick. I never used them myself, so hopefully others will have something to add. Maybe it can help him keep the formula down better.

Hopefully the other moms will have some advice too. Hang in there. I know it’s tough.

I would ask for a swallow study- this is where they look at HOW baby is swallowing and if there’s any aspiration into the lungs- this is done by a speech pathologist, which sounds funny because it’s a baby, but that’s who runs the test

the main reason I say this is so you can know baby isn’t choking and getting it into his lungs- also they will look at HOW baby is swallowing and if there’s a problem with the suck/swallow you can get help and, more importantly, you can discuss thickeners- mentioned above- so, if dr doesn’t want cereal (which is not completely unreasonable), there are other options for thickening (Simply Thick) & the test/study can tell you EXACTLY how thick your baby needs his formula to be- the terms are ‘nectar’ and ‘honey’ – terms like that

When my dd, now 2, was a newborn she did the same thing, she didn’t stop breathing, but it was hard for her, and hard for me to watch. I can sympathize with you because the dr.’s don’t understand your fear or try to help you with it.

The best advice I can give is to keep your baby with you in the same room, if not the same bed(Depends on how you sleep), so that you can monitor and be there for him and suction his nose, or call 911 if needed. NEVER feel you can’t call for help, better safe than sorry. I still cosleep with my dd, it started out to monitor her, and now it’s just a “family bed”.Okay, it’s also still to monitor her too. I am a nervous nelly!

Make sure to put him to sleep on his side, buy the special sleepers for this. This was the ONLY advice the Dr. gave me when I voiced my fear of her suffocating from vomit.It sucks, but it is what it is.

If she has an allergy from milk, it is probably the milk in her system causing this (if you just recently took her off milk products). It will take a couple of weeks for it to leave. After about 6-8 weeks of no milk products the violent vomiting from her nose and mouth stopped, although she still had GER, but it did get better.

My dd did this many times. She would go nuts, b/c it’s so uncomfortable, that she would scream and hold her breath and turn blue until the episode passed. Do you think this may be what is happening wiht your little one? Are you sure that he’s not breathing? I’m just asking b/c even if his nasal airway is blocked, he should be able to breathe through his mouth. Either way, I know how scary it is. If it’s happening frequently, I would try to videotape an episode and take it right to the doctor. Sorry you’re going through it.

Hi I just wanted to let you know that it did take at least 10 days for the Neocate formula to make a difference for my dd, she was mspi as well with a horrible rash all over her face and neck. She did the exact same thing…puking through her nose and mouth as well. It was so scary for me too.

Are you tring to keep him upright as much as you can? I held my dd on my chest for a half hour every time she ate and she slept on a reflux pillow (when she would sleep…that is) and that helped a little. In the end it was the formula and losec/caracream combo that alleviated her symptoms.

It sounds like you have jerks for doctors…which must be sooo hard. We’ve been through our share of them as well.

I just bought a book called “colic solved” and it’s the first published thing I’ve ever read that has so many helpful points in it. It even has suggestions for dealing with doctors “without a clue”. Maybe you could look for it.

I’d agree that PPIs are the best approach as well. I think that the reflux/mspi pain makes our little ones so crazy that they end up puking sometimes just because they are so frantic trying to deal with it.

Oh I almost forgot, when my dd has those puking episodes I sometimes get so freaked out that it’s even hard for me to remember… (but luckily my husband is here to stay calm and remind me)…Just put your finger in her mouth!

If your son is anything like my dd he, probably gets so scared when the puke comes up that keeps his mouth shut, thrashing around trying desperately to breathe through his nose…so if you remind him that he can get air through his mouth he’ll probably gasp. Hope this helps.

How old is your son? My daughter is 3 months old, although she was 5 weeks early when she was born. She was vomitting a lot for awhile, but she hadn’t been for several weeks after we had her on an already thickened formula, which she was very fussy on) and now she is on Alimentum with rice cereal added. All of a sudden last Saturday two hours after she ate, she threw up. It was so thick that it did clog both nostrils and her throat. She turned purple and was thrashing around trying to breathe. I freaked out and luckily my husband was there and grabbed the nasal aspirator and got her nose cleaned out. It was the most horrifying experience of my life, so I really understand and feel your pain. We took her to urgent care to make sure nothing got into her lungs, and I have taken her to the ped several times since then, but they don’t have any answers. We are still trying to get her a referral to a GI specialist which our ped hasn’t wanted to do for some reason. He just wanted to give her Reglan, which I am also not comfortable with because of all the serious side effects. I wish I had an answer for you, but I thought you might feel better to know that it has happened to other babies. I sleep on the couch with my daughter in her car seat next to me so that I can keep a hand on her at night in case it happens when we aren’t awake. Maybe you could try a formula that is already thickened. Natalie was on Similac Sensitive RS. She did well on it for awhile, but then started to get really really fussy. There is also Enfamil AR. These formulas have rice starch added so that it is thick, but doesn’t have the extra calories of the actual cereal.
