InactiveNeed help to counter the bitter taste: Anyone know of a good trick to give a 4 month old baby a full dose of omeprazole (Prilosec, Zegrid) despite the very bitter taste?
I’ve tried to administer both the liquid pharmacy compound and Zegerid packets with Mylanta cherry supreme and our little guy keeps grimacing and spitting out most of every dose. Since he already has a feeding aversion brewing, I don’t want to traumatize him further by sticking really nasty tasting stuff in his mouth. And I especially don’t want him to associate a bitter taste with his bottle!
I’ve already tried mixing with a bit of molasses and caramel syrup, which helps (he doesn’t cry as hard) but he still spits this out.
Maybe someone has gone through this before and knows a better trick?
Best, Sonia

InactiveWe finally switched to Nexium 20mg per day because we couldn’t get around the awful taste problem for omeprazole, and the prevacid solutabs caused severe appetite suppression in our then-5-month old after a few weeks. Nexium doesn’t taste bad and you can get it in 10mg and 20mg powder packets that can be mixed with water or pedialyte and administered with an oral syringe or dropper. After a few months of using the powder packets (flavor is a yummy orange) we switched to the Nexium capsules which I break open and mix with applesauce or pedialyte. You administer just like any other PPI, on an empty stomach and 30+ mins before a meal.

InactiveAnd by the way, we also tried the buffer babies / caracream with both prevacid and prilosec, but our little guy didn’t like the flavor of that either. The caracream doesn’t fully mask the bitter taste of prilosec, although it does have a nice sweet caramel flavor when mixed with prevacid. You can use this with OTC prilosec or prevacid (without a prescription) and can order by going to this website: http://www.chocobase.com/
I’d highly recommend the Nexium if your insurance will cover this, it’s really worked wonders for us!

InactiveThanks everyone! My 10month old takes it alright but its my 2 yr old that does not like it. We got Zantac flavored today so we will see.. Thinking Zantac might not be enough though, but thats the only thing they can flavor so thought it was worth a try and better than nothing.
