I am looking for some input on my 2 1/2 year olds current situation. He has been on reflux meds continuously since 6 months. He last suffered from feeding problems at a year and a half and we switched doctors and his meds were increased to 15mg of Prevacid 2 times a day. Also Pepcid before lunch so we could make it through lunch and nap.
In October he was taken off the Pepcid to see how he would do. He ended up being miserable but we weren’t sure if it was from a cold, sinuses or what. He stopped napping and his behavior was atrocious and he would sit to eat, after a bite or two say he was done and scream to get down! We tried antibiotics thinking it was sinuses but I only could get 2 complete doses in him. So we put him back on the same does of Pepcid 1.5ml before lunch and he is much more pleasant and napping, but still aren’t sure if it was that or he was just better. Then after a hearty breakfast one day he threw up at the table. Now ever since at at least 2 meals a day, usually lunch and dinner, my poor lovey begins to scream at some point during the meal that he is going to throw up and to help him. He wants me to keep an eye on his mouth so it doesn’t throw up and keeps a bowl with him at each meal. He says it hurts in his mouth and his belly and last night at Christmas dinner he told us it tastes sour after the incident happened yet again.Three days ago I did call the GI doctor and they said he was at the max for the Prevacid but to give 2ml Pepcid 2 times a day- before lunch and before bed. I thought it would make more sense to do it before dinner since it is meal time he struggles with. The doctor (and my husband for that matter) seem to think he was tramatized from the vomiting incident. But I disagree. He complains about this and it happens suddenly, whether it is veggies, his favorite snack or a treat like a brownie. He is drinking a ton at meal times too. My husband says he probably is confusing a burp with the about to vomit feeling so I spend meal time rubbing his back and burping him in between swallows and there are no substantial burps.Oh also, he has begun to cough through out the day too.My question is- could the Prevacid not work anymore for him? I don’t want to put him through testing, he has been through way too much. And I would hate to mess around with his meds too but need to help him, he is in pain and I don’t want him to decide not to eat anymore. Also, does Pepcid ever make children more hyper or is it just the holidays? And I don’t know much about h pyloric, but my Grandfather and mother in law have suffered from that, could that have any connection.I truly appreciate any help and advice. I thought we were doing well and he would outgrow all of this now that my sweetie is going on 3!December 26, 2008 at 9:45 pm #59873AnonymousInactiveI personally think you’re med doses are low and could be upped.
At about 15 minths old Jedd was taking 5ml twice a day of Prilosec and he was very small for his age in height and weight due to FTT in his past.Even if the GI wants to try a med wean I woudln’t do it in the future, again, JMHO we won’t do it anymore. We have successfully weaned to an H2 blocker and will sit there for at least until Jedd is 3. He turned two in October. Also, are you workign with a Seepch Language Pathologist (adn SLP) or an Occupational Therapist who are trained to work with kiddos with feeding issues????I woudl go through you local school district and get them involvoed as soon as you can. You can also do private ST or OT through your ins. co. But hey will only cover so much before telling you that you are out of visit for the year, I.E. you’re at the cap and must go OOP for your service, VERY costly.Again, JMHO but it sounds liek the meds need to be upped to get some relief on board. Once that occurs you should be able to get him back to eating regularly. We were always told that unitl a child’s medical issues are resolved they will not eat very well.December 27, 2008 at 8:50 am #59881AnonymousInactiveThanks for your thoughts. He did receive OT for feeding and was releases last winter. The meds is what helped the most. We loved our OT but our son is extremely determined and not as agreeable as we hoped.
We will try to get through this weekend and tweek his schedule. If it continues I am calling gi on Monday about a med increase. I saw on Marci kids it could be upped substantially.I ran into an old friend last night and she spoke about how drinking aloe, which is natural and safe, can soothe and potentially cure the reflux for many people. Does anyone know about that?December 27, 2008 at 2:03 pm #59883AnonymousInactiveI know someoen from another board who is also here who does alternative med. with her DD. Her name is Leo I can’t remember her screen name here though. Hopefully she’ll pop by with help.
The thing with feeding issues is as long as the medical front is all okay (which you may not be yet) you have to be very coonsitent to have great success. It took time and we had to “let Jedd know who was boss” NO tforce feeidng at all we never did that. But he knew we expected him to eat foods off the spoon when we presented it to him and any behaviors that were not appropriate we not acceptable. It’s hard to explain it all here by typing but we did both a behavioural approach as well as times during the day where he was allowed to enjoy playing with food. That combination has worked great for us.December 29, 2008 at 9:00 pm #59922hellbenntKeymasterleo is kendramom (not sure of exact name!) but look through this link & you’ll see info she’s posted about probiotics & enzymes and you can PM her:
December 30, 2008 at 1:16 pm #59933AnonymousInactiveHi there,
i am sorry your little one is struggling with his foods and reflux. Your situation sounds so familiar. We struggled with vomiting and food refusal since birth. My dd vomiting issues got much better after we started her on plant based digestive nzymes and probiotics. I would say the enzymes helped her the most.We tried aloe vera for a while and did not see much improvement.I also went thorugh an elimnation diet process. This was very hard to do, but i see her now (a year later), i would do it all over again in a heart beat. She is a happier toddler and does not vomit or cries as much anymore. We still have food issues, but that has improved by 50%.have you considered food allergies/sensitivities maybe causing problems?i would start by adding digestive enzymes and eliminating milk, soy, wheat for a while and see if that helps a little.I have to eliminate almost every food from my dd’s diet before she started to do well. After a year off all those foods, we have re-introduced about 4 of them in a rotation diet schudule and she is doing well with them.hang in there and ask questions.LeoJanuary 2, 2009 at 8:58 pm #60030AnonymousInactiveThank you for sharing with me. It is funny because my oldest son was allergic to dairy, soy and eggs and has outgrown those allergies thankfully. He also had reflux but has been med free since 9 months. Now Liam was allergy tested at the young age of 6 months and of course nothing showed and I know that if it is gut related most likely nothing will come up anyway (my oldest’s dairy and soy were gut allergies that were never varified by the allergist but we knew enough to avoid them at all costs- he did have an epipen due to the egg).
Liam has not reacted to food like Spencer did except the fact he has reflux and DGE and it is worse. He is very moody and his behavior is very frustrating so I have thought that food could be playing a role but never really thought about it having such a profound affect on his reflux (except for foods that you are suppose to avoid on the reflux diet). Cutting dairy and soy out won’t be difficult since both boys drink rice milk. But the wheat won’t be fun. We did it once with Spencer and that was a pain, but I am willing to do it to help him. How long would he have to be wheat free before we could expect to see a difference? Liam does take acidophulus bifidus tablets daily but not the probiotics or enzymes. Can you tell my more about the digestive enzymes? I only know about them a little bit because my cousins son has CF.Thanks for all your help!January 2, 2009 at 9:05 pm #60031hellbenntKeymasterDigestive Enzymes & Probiotics:Interesting and informative posts for you by Sheri, MFPIx2:January 3, 2009 at 4:14 pm #60042AnonymousInactiveThank you again Laura.
