InactiveHi all,
My daughter was diagnosed very young with MSPI and I breastfed for 13 months on an elimination diet. We finally weaned, and she failed another milk tolllerance test. For the past 8 months, I have been giving her Soy Similac 2 in a nuby cup. She has been so fussy with food that on many days she drinks a full 24 ounces. Last night I read on the label that Similac 2 is only recommended until 24 months, shich is a short 2 months away for us.
Questions for the group: (1) Should I start cutting back on the number of sippy cups per day? Maybe this will encourage her to eat more food? (2) What do we turn to for milk type beverage at 24 months? Our GI said soy milk shouldn’t be offered until 4 or 5 since it isn’t rich in the fatty acids for brain development???
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

KeymasterI can’t answer about the number of cups per day, but as far as other things to drink- there are different ‘milks’ – almond, soy, rice, even potato- I know the rice milk is enriched and fortified- you’ll have to check out the others-
and I also know you can add ‘good’ fats to her diet- not necessarily to the milk (or even to the milk, lol) but there’s flax oil, a mom here reported good things about avocado oil, there’s olive oil- you get the idea
– so there are ways to get the good fats…even fish oil…when you say fussy about food- what will she eat? maybe I/we can help from there…

InactiveThe first two years the infant’s brain grows rapidly and adequate fat intake is essential for normal neurological development. After age 2 this is less of an issue, although children of all ages need fat in their diets. I don’t remember the exact numbers…..maybe do some research or ask her doc how many grams of fat a two year old needs. I’m pretty sure it’s 30% of their diet, but I don’t remember how many calories that’s based on.
I was told that my one year old only needed 12 – 15 ounces of milk or formula a day, so maybe try reducing the amount of formula she’s getting in her sippy cup. Does she walk around with her cup, or do you give it to her only in her high chair? Sometimes allowing them to walk around the house with a sippy cup will cause some toddlers to use their cups like a bottle; a sort of comfort item, and then they drink so much that they have no appetite at meal times. Will she drink water in her cup instead of milk? I generally only give my kids milk at meal times, and water the rest of the day.
If she’s mspi I personally would have no problem keeping her on whatever formula is working for her. I’d just reduce the amount so she’ll have more of an appetite for other foods. Some moms here use Pediasure, so that’s something to consider, but you’d probably have to limit it also so that she begins to eat better.

Inactivei would also keep her on formula if that is what she is doing well on. and it couldnt hurt at all! she is getting the nutrients she needs. i think it just says to 24 month just so you know that they dont “need” it as much after that. my neice is on isomil 2 and she is 2 and a half years old!!! her mom said she isnt a good eater either, and feels better that she is getting her nutrients this way.
soo, i dont think its a big rush to get her off personaly 😉

InactiveI agree with them. Don’t follow just what the packaging says, trust your gut. I used Isomil mixed with whole milk until just recently and he’s 2-1/2 because it seemed to help keep his stools firmer, than just the milk alone. Maybe just decrease it a little to encourage hunger. Best of luck!
