I have traveled on a plane with Ashtyn before but it was a very short flight & she was only a few months old. On 3/10, we are flying overseas. We are flying from Denver to Atlanta, then Atlanta to Paris. Then we are going to stay the night in Paris & then fly from Paris to Amman, Jordan to visit Zack’s family. We decided to stay in Paris just because that is a lot of flying for all of us. Also, ZAck’s brother, sister in law & nephew from Tulsa are meeting us in Atlanta & we are flying the rest of the way together. Luckily his nephew is almost 12. We bought one of those strollers called the sit n stroll:
It is pretty cool. It is FAA flight certified seat for kids up to 40 lbs. The wheels fold under into a compartment for a seat. You can use as a stroller with the flick of a small handle, the wheels pop out. Then the handle comes out just like luggage with wheels. It is also a certified car seat as wheel & can be used as a booster chair for eating.
Besides getting this & taking a backpack full of thisng to keep Ashtyn busy (colors, books, DVD’s) does anyone else have any ideas? It is a 3 hr trip to Atlanta. Hopefully she will sleep as it is during her nap time. Then we have a couple hour layover & then an 8 1/2 hr flight to Paris. Hopefully she will sleep on the plane. Then the next day when we fly to Amman that will be another 5 hours. I hate to assume she will sleep on the plane. This is because we were going to do a 12 hr car trip a while back & we left at night hoping that she would just sleep in the car all night. Well, she slept for 3 hours & then was up the rest of the night in the car. It is hard to entertain a toddler in the darkness of a car.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

That car seat/stroller thing looks really great! I haven’t traveled with Hailey yet, so I’m curious to see what others can offer. I’m planning a trip with just me and her this fall.

March 3, 2006 at 5:02 pm #2969AnonymousInactiveThat car seat stroller looks awesome – who makes that?

Ashtyn is one of those kids who Benedryl makes her wired & not tired.
I think the stroller is made by Travel Line. The cheapest place you can get it is ebay. I bought it brand new from a person that sells it in their ebay store. You don’t have to bid, it is a buy it now. They usually list several hundred for sell at a time. I bought it for $189.00 & that includes UPS shipping. Some people do have them sometimes that are used but I personally just prefer new. If you go to ebay you can just do a search for sit n stroll & it should take you to it.

I’ve read from parents that they wrap up a bunch of little gifts and if/when things get really bad, they take out a little present and have their toddler unwrap it- wrap things like what you’d bring anyway: small little toys, coloring pages and crayons, etc-
on the longer flights, like from paris to amman, the people are used to little ones and are more tolerant, I think. I imagine you’ll be walking around the plane a lot, pointing things out to Ashtyn, etc…
make sure to pack all meds you’d have at home bcse they might be difficult/different abroad…
If ashtyn is still light enough, and you still have your back-pack style carrier, you might want to bring it? Streets in foreign cities are sometimes hard to maneuver strollers on (?)…
your trips sounds so exciting!!!!

March 3, 2006 at 10:27 pm #2999AnonymousInactiveSherry – that sounds like so much fun!!! I’m with Laura on the little gifts. That worked wonders for Nate when we took him on his first “big” trip. He was about 2 at the time too and he would get so excited to open the gifts!!! Also take lots of snacks so she can eat whenever she is hungry. We did buy him one of the small magna doodles and that kept him busy for hours and I didn’t have to worry about him dropping crayons or coloring on things he shouldn’t!!! Hope you have a great trip!!!
March 3, 2006 at 10:45 pm #3004AnonymousInactivei’d suggest xanax!!!LOL!LOL!LOL!!!! if i took sylvia on a trip that long, i’m sure that we’d be given parachutes and directed to the nearest exit. i often say that i don’t have “public” children. fortunately, they seem to mellow out when they hit school. sorry i don’t have any REAL advice.
March 3, 2006 at 11:12 pm #3005AnonymousInactiveThanks ladies!
I like the little presents idea. I have actually saved the last 3-4 happy meal toys to wait & give to her on the plane. She does like her big magna doodle so maybe I will get the little one.
I already have a list of meds: Prevacid, Carafate, Mylanta, Tylenol, cold meds, etc…….I even made sure to get a few extra weeks worth of Prevacid samples from the GI in case for some reason we get delayed a few days for whatever reason coming back.
As far as a carrier, she is too big for it & she wouldn’t go for it anyway. She never was too much of a stroller kid even before she could walk. She was too used to being carried/worn. Once she learned to walk that was it. She will probably just walk everywhere. As far as the car seat/stroller that I talked about above, it has a built in shock like system which helps making a smooth ride. Besides, Amman is pretty modern with paved streets, sidewalks. Its nice because the weather is almost exactly what it is like here in the Denver area (60’s all week this week!).
I am taking plenty of snacks because who knows if she will even eat airplane food. I am not packing special food for her to eat over there but just snacks/food for the plane. I figured that if all else fails on her eating Zack’s moms cooking, there is a McDonalds just a few miles from their house.
I am so ecited for this trip. I will be meeting Zack’s family for the 1st time & we have been together for almost 10 years. The only person I know in his family is 1 brother & his wife & son who live in Tulsa. We are pretty close to them. So, it will be nice for us all to be together. Zack hasn’t seen his mom in like 13-14 years. I will also be meeting 2 sisters, another brother & one of his sisters husband & 3 other nephews. He has many cousins, aunts, etc as well that he has not seen since he was young so I am sure it will just be like a big party. They are really into family gatherings there. Luckily they all speak English except his mother even though I don’t expect them to speak English all the time. Luckily I am close to my sis in law from Oklahoma. She has met the family though as she has been with Zack’s brother almost 20 years.
Anyway, I will be gone from March 10-31. We will be gone for 3 weeks. It will be exciting.
The only bad thing is that Ashtyn came down with a cold 2 days ago but it isn’t a major cold so she should be fine within a week. Also, it is perfect timing as she just started cutting her 2 year molars also. Oh well!
March 4, 2006 at 1:15 am #3006AnonymousInactiveI know our Peds MD has RX a low dose of Phenergan for children whom get motion sickness. She has also RX it to children who are going on long trips such as yours just incase since you never know.
March 4, 2006 at 2:21 pm #3025hellbenntKeymasterYour trip sounds like so much fun! Nothing like a big family gathering (if you’re into that type of thing, which I am, lol!) ! I just love all the different foods and mediterranean foods are so good, especially the desserts, ooooh, I’m drooling here, LOL!

I can’t wait for the foods. Zack’s mom is old fashioned & is one of those moms that likes to cook all the time & is always trying to feed her kids. Zack was trying to lose a bit of weight before the trip so that when he gained weight on vacation he wouldn’t get too overweight (which he isn’t to begin with). But, he didn’t lose any. Oh well. I swear that guy worries more about his weight that I do! I can’t wait for the desserts also……I love it!!!!
By the way, hows the pregnancy going?
March 7, 2006 at 11:35 pm #3219hellbenntKeymasterI’m fine thanks! dreaming of those yummy, flakey-pastry, honey-dripping, crushed nut-filled desserts you’ll be eating
March 8, 2006 at 11:01 am #3271AnonymousInactivehey sherry! good luck, i am sure ashtyn will be a trooper! just wanted to throw in that there are also AWESOME olives in the middle east, i am sure your girlie will enjoy…(i remember she likes olives because it inspired me to try them with hannah. they make nice things for your fingers and to feed to mommy and daddy here.)
March 8, 2006 at 4:36 pm #3307AnonymousInactiveA co-worker just took his 3 year old on a flight to Taiwan and he said that a portable DVD was a lifesaver. And, or course, in true toddler fashion – his son watched the same DVD over and over and over and over again.
