InactiveAre you taking all bottles away or jus weaning down bottles?? I would say go fromw 4-3-2-1 bottle per day by weeks if you get what I mean?? My one year old (oct 6) is taking noon bottle and bedtime bottle. We just recently took away a 9-10 am bottle, and soon I hope to take away noon bottle, but he struggle with milk from a sippy and he has weight issues, so I would say those are factors to consider.
If your son is taking good intake from sippy (mine is not) you are fine. I would say skip one bottle a day if possible and offer sippy cup more often and then just continue to take away as you can but just remember to keep intake up.With my first, it was harder on me than baby! My ped said you didn’t need to get rid of bottle until 15 mo, I know some on here have done up until 2 yrs. I think every child is sooooo different, but if he’s has taken to a cup well, you should be fine!We went from Neocate and goats milk to whole milk within about 10 days. My doc said it was fine b/c he was eating milk products. Don’t know what kind of formula you are on.October 20, 2007 at 9:19 pm #44515hellbennt
Keymasteryou might not like my opinion…
who cares about bottles? I mean the actual drinking from a bottle…I think our society is way too hung up on the whole sucking thing! so what if a 12month old drinks from a bottle? what if you were breastfeeding? I am still breastfeeding my 15 month old. It’s just one time a day (5am; I am way too lazy to go give him a bottle/sippy and he’ll go back to sleep until 7am, but I’m on the verge/cusp of weaning him not that I need to explain, lol) , but that could be seen as a bottle a day at 15 months old…and I breastfed jonah until 15 months (same scenario). My niece had a bottle a day until she was really ‘old’ (probably about 3yrs old ) so that’s ‘extreme.’ She’s almost 5yrs old now and FINE. No orthadontic issues, no other issues. I’m not sure I would tell anyone to let it go on as long as it did with her, but hey, to each their own!anyway my point is to do what you feel is right and to really think about why you’re deciding to have your baby give up the bottle at 12 months old…is it because the dr told you? because ‘they say?’ is it because friends & family are pressuring you? OR, is it that your baby isn’t showing as much interest in the bottle anymore and it’s a ‘natural’ process he’s going through?food for thought….ps: edited to add that I’m SO not ranting at YOU!!!!I just got on my soapbox, said my spiel, and hopped right off

InactiveI agree with Laura..
But if you really want to get rid of it.. I would SLOWLY wean as Erica mentioned. Too much too fast isnt good for them. My son is 16 mos. and just now starting to go to two bottles a day..and will take three if I offer it ! But I decided it was time to go to two when he didn’t beg me or whine if he didnt get his middle of the day one. I also think its time when they can drink an effecient amount of milk from a sippy…and Shane cant/wont.G’LUCK! And remember its no rush!October 21, 2007 at 1:01 pm #44527Anonymous
Inactiveok here is the thing he has like 5 bottles a day or somedays more
he just likes it that much i was working on taking away the morning one and it was working well till he got sick (cold) now he wants his bottle almost every 4-5 hrs nways i like the slowly approach and i guess one day he’ll be more interested in food than in bottles.October 21, 2007 at 1:09 pm #44528hellbennt
Keymasterby morning one if you mean the first one of the day, I would say that’s the hardest one to drop and I would save that one for last,
at least that’s MY experience. I actually found that it was easier, when I was down to 2x a day, to drop the before bed one rather than the 1rst one in the morning. again, I breastfeed, but I think it’s comparable…what I would do/did is to offer a dairy snack (if baby isn’t mspi!) at the time of a ‘milk feeding’ (ie breastfeeding or bottle)- so if I breastfed him 1st thing in the morning, I then gave breakfast and then after breakfast at the time for another ‘milk feeding’ I’d sit baby down for a snack of yogurt or cheese and some fruit, etc, and I ALWAYS have a sippy of water out & about & available to baby/toddler at all times…HTHOctober 21, 2007 at 6:50 pm #44542Anonymous
InactiveWe actually found that the nighttime bottle was the hardest for us to drop – and honestly, Owen STILL has a sippy cup of milk at bedtime so I guess that probably means he hasn’t really dropped it still. And he’s almost 3.
At 15 months we had him down to just morning and night bottles. We were worried about the morning one since we used to always give Owen a bottle right when he would wake up first thing. We were really nervous about changing that but thought that the easiest thing for us to do was to bring him downstairs and feed him breakfast instead – whether it was cereal, or egg yolks, or something else that he liked at that point. We had to make sure it was ready before going to get him, so we’d come down, prep the food, then grab him from the crib and bring him downstairs to eat his breakfast. First thing in the morning he was so hungry he didn’t really care which way he got to eat – just as long as he got something. So that went very smoothly. Solids were always so much easier for Owen though – I don’t think he was ever 100% comfortable with drinking from his bottle so it may have been easier for us than if he really likes drinking from bottles.
We still gave him his bedtime bottle until 18 months. Then we switched to a sippy and he seriously could have cared less – we were much more upset about it than he was!!!

Good luck!

InactiveAlana still has her bottle (well a straw cup) in the morning and at night. Even when sick she can’t go without the morning one…we can on occasion skip the afo/night one. I too would go for weaning the day ones first. When I dropped day bottles Alana was drinking a lot of water from a straw cup at the time and I made sure she had as many solids as she wanted. goodluck.
