InactiveBrendan is 3 1/2 months now on Elecare and Prevacid 15 mgs split into 2 doses of 7.5 mgs each (he is 15 lbs, 14 ounces) and still having a terrible time with feedings and not sleeping. He only took 14 ounces yesterday and his local GI specialist says he should be taking a minimum of 24 ounces. Feeding him is like a rodeo – he arches, pushes off my lap, moves his head from one side to another, and cries. After 1/2 ounce or 1 ounce, I feel like I am forcing him to take more. He also continues to have trouble sleeping. His longest sleep is 3 hours in the Nap Nanny at night and then he is up the rest of the night and only sleeps on me during the day. He is gaining weight and growing normally which is a miracle, but also seems to make the GI specialists not take his situation seriously. We are taking him to Children’s Hosp of Philadelphia on Tuesday for an initial consult and I would appreciate any advice on how best to get the doctors to take his pain seriously. I truly believe that the Prevacid 15 mgs is not enough to help him and that he is in pain.I am also reseaching how to deal with sleeping after he outgrows the Nap Nanny. Has anyone had success with a sleeping device? If his meds were correct, do you think he should be able to sleep in his crib? He has never slept in the crib – most of his sleep has been on me.KarenReflux 2011-02-12 16:01:13 February 14, 2011 at 2:10 pm #67805hellbennt

InactiveIf feeding is a rodeo, the meds are likely not right. Either the dosage, the brand or the way it is being administered. PPIs can be tricky to get just right unless you are combining it with Caracream. Are you giving it on a empty stomach and feeding 20 minutes later? How long has he been on the Elecare?
As far as sleeping devices, I swear by the Fisher Prices Soothing Motions Glider.February 14, 2011 at 8:28 pm #67812Anonymous
InactiveThank you both so much for the replies. I believe the dosage of the Prevacid is not enough for him – we do give it on an empty stomach and wait 30 minutes and then feed. We have our appointment tomorrow Children’s Hosp of Philadelphia – hope this doctor will make some changes.

InactiveWhen did he start the Elecare, did his feedings get worse after that or have they always been this way? Sorry I feel like a walking promo but since it helped my son I’m going to recommend trying the Cherry-Vanilla flavor packets made by Neocate. Maybe they will send you a free sample. It isn’t magic but it has helped my son eat more b/c he prefers the taste more.

InactiveHe started Elecare at 2 months and he is now 3 1/2 months. The flavor packets are a good suggestion – maybe he doesn’t like the taste of Elecare? I was not sure how developed their taste is by this age.February 15, 2011 at 9:57 am #67816Anonymous
Inactive15 MG at 3.5 months does sound like the right amount. I wonder if the issue is that it is not getting in his system. It was for my son anyway. We had him all the way up to 30mg and things were still bad. I finally changed him over to Buffer Babies/Caracream. A week later I had a completely different kid 6 weeks later he went from the 2nd percentile in weight to 50th. Feeding issues ended. You can order it from http://www.refluxsolutions.com. Also, if he is super sentive with dairy, the solutabs might actually be making it worse. There is lactose in them.
