InactiveGreat! Thanks. I will mention you and this board. Hopefully I will get a discount.

InactiveLori – I think you handled the nightwaking perfectly – and she must be so proud of herself! On the bed – I’d hold off as long as possible. And definitely don’t make the switch until you are really confident she’s thru this stage – cause in a bed she won’t call you – she’ll just show up! It will be harder for her to talk herself back to sleep with the temptation to just get up and out. I keep my kids in the crib either until they are too big for it (Andrew at 3 1/2) or climbing out (Jane at 18 months
) James is still in his at 2 1/2 with no plans to get out any time soon!May 10, 2006 at 1:47 pm #7813Anonymous
InactiveI agree. The longer they’re in the crib the better!!
Let’s contain them as long as we can!May 10, 2006 at 1:59 pm #7814Anonymous
InactiveWell I’m not going to be getting any mommy of the year awards over here. Last night at around 11:30 Sarah woke up again saying that she needs to go pee. I left her until she was screaming and hanging over the rail of the crib. Then I went in and tried to lay her back down, but she was screaming- “NO, NO mummy, I need to go pee”. The more I tried to lay her down the more hysterical she got. Finally I said, “No Sarah, you already went pee before you went to bed”. And she was screaming and crying, and said “But mummy I need to go pee. Hurry it’s going to come out”. Finally realizing this was going no where I matter of factly picked her up and took her to the bathroom and she was crying “mummy you made my pee pee come out in my pants” and sure enough when I took off her diaper it was soaked. I felt so awful I can’t even tell you… I left my daughter and made her pee herself. I still feel terrible. Then I put her back in bed and she said “mummy I want my night night music”, and I told her no it’s time to sleep and left the room. She was fine until morning. I really have no clue what to do.
AMBER- you mentioned that your daughter would wake up to go pee and you would take her. Did this only happen once a night or more often. How long before it stopped?
I really don’t know what to do. I had planned to leave her because she was faking it for attention, but now it’s become a “boy who cried wolf” situation, and I don’t know when she really has to go. I was thinking of maybe taking her once, but not talking to her or engaging her in any way, and then leaving her the other times assuming she’s faking it. But I’m really at a loss here. If she wasn’t saying she had to go then I wouldn’t think twice about leaving her, but I really don’t know what to do.
Any advice. It’s driving me crazy. Her bed is supposed to come tomorrow, but I’m thinking of trying to delay it until this is under control.

InactiveI can’t really address the pee issue but as for the night music, have
you considered getting her a Ocean Wonders Aquarium or Flutterby Dreams
Soother for her crib? She’d be able to turn it on herself at night if
she wanted (and the Flutterby has a ceiling light show) – might cut
down on calls out to you?May 10, 2006 at 2:22 pm #7820Anonymous
InactiveThanks for the suggestion, Karen. I have been thinking about it actually, but figured it would probably be a double edged sword- she’d be able to do it herself, but might actually end up fooling around with it and playing when she should be asleep. I actually have two right now- her old ocean wonders aquarium (which terrifies Hailey so is now unused) and Hailey’s dreamscapes soother (which is also unused). I think as far as the music goes, I’m just going to stick to my instincts and go tough love with that one, but as for the pee issue, I’m strumped!

InactiveMy friend with recovered reflux twins who are now 22 months still watch
their Dreamscapes soother (the story part) every night before bed. Yes,
they do sometimes put it on middle of night (and their music box to)
but not to the extent where it means they don’t sleep enough. My friend
keeps her monitor volume low so she doesn’t hear the crib toys if they
turn them on but loud enough she can hear them if they really need her.Does she drink water or milk right before bed?

InactiveShe does take a few sips of water after her bath. I’ve tried to stop it, but I don’t think it’s going to happen…she’s just so thirsty when she comes out.

InactiveLori,
Liza did the same thing…and it became the “boy crying wolf” for us, too. I put my foot down a few times and she wet her bed once and even pooped once in her bed. I, too felt horrible…just horrible. But, the truth of the matter is that the majority of the time she really didn’t have to go potty and was just trying to get attention, or use an excuse to get out of bed.
What finally worked for us was to let her go when she said she had to, but only once or twice. If she asked a third time, it was obvious she didn’t have to go. When I let her get up to go potty I would be very firm and matter of fact with her, not letting her engage me in any conversation. As soon as she was done, I’d march her back to bed and say good night. With Liza the problem was that everytime she went potty she’d get more hugs and kisses and “I love you’s” when she went back to bed. She loved that attention and it was driving her to keep asking to go. Once I cut that out and was more matter of fact and firm with her, she gradually cut out the potty trips. It was gradual, though. It didn’t happen overnight.
Right now you have that dilemna, does she have to go, or is she faking it? You’re never going to know for sure, so it may help to teach Sarah that she is allowed to go if she has to, but that it’s not going to get her any extra attention from you. That’s how we solved the problem with Liza. Also, limiting fluids after 6 pm, so you know she can’t have to pee that much helps.
BTW – Ellie’s not even potty trained yet and she has tried this little trick, figuring if it got Liza out of bed it’d work for her, too!
Little rascals!About the video monitors, you can have two in two different rooms if they are both on a different frequency. Ours both have different megahertz, (which means nothing to me), except that they don’t interfere with each other. Also, some systems come with one monitor and two cameras so you can have a camera in two different rooms and then switch channels on the monitor to view each room. Also, some have many more infra-red lights on them making night time viewing better. One of mine has great infra-red, the other not as good.
Good luck! I hope you solve the “potty issue” soon.

InactiveThanks Christine! I hope we figure things out too. I’m going to ask the ped about it on Friday when I take Hailey to get her ears checked. I figure that I have no choice but to let her go at least once- how can I make her pee in bed? But after that I don’t think so. Not sure if that’s the right thing to do.

InactiveLori – My daughter has always been extremely intelligent for her age, and unfortuntely I think also very manipulative. When she was getting up at night, it was mainly before midnight, and she would get up about 3-4 times to go to the toilet. Sometimes she would do something, but alot of the time she wouldnt. I think it was about 2 or 3 weeks before we stopped entertaining her and then another couple of weeks of being very business like before the wakings stopped. We went away on vacation when she was about 18 months old and she wouldnt sleep so we gave her some toys in her bed to sleep with. When we got home she wouldnt give them up, and then wanted more and more toys every night until she could hardly fit in her bed, and she would spend half the night playing with them. At that point i said “thats enough” and took all the toys out. She cried for the first couple of nights and then got over it.
One other thing I found is that her sleeping at night really improved when we cut out her daytime nap. She used to sleep for a couple of hours in the afternoon, and even though it was great for me, we paid for it at night when she wouldnt sleep.
She sleeps good now. Only wakes on the odd occasion if she has a nightmare or falls out of bed. She went through a period of waking really early so we gave her an alarm clock and she is not allowed to get up until it goes off
. These stages dont seem to last too long, hope she gets through it soon.

InactiveMy oldest listens to music as he falls asleep…always has. I actually like it b/c it’s “soothing” classical music and it kind of helps him relax. Aidan however, doesn’t like for me to sing to him, he likes it nice and quiet when he sleeps, he’ll even keep waking up if I try to sing to him!! Oh. austin woke up in the middles of the night forever. Now that he’s older he still act like that but now it’s in the form of “one more story, I REALLY want to read a book,..which sometimes delays bedtime for a good bit of time, but as soon as the music starts and I say goodnight, he drifts off. Everyone says potty training is the worst thing to deal with but I think gettimg them to sleep at night is much much harder.- I took him to build a bear last year and told him he could build a special friend who’d sleep with him at nigth and give him good dreams. He looked at me like I was the lamest person on earth! But he went ahead and built this dog, got him a falcons outfit, and He has slept with “dog” (we’re really creative on the stuffed animal names) since the day he got him!!!! (he makes me hide dog when friends come over..”not cool” he said, when did being “cool” matter to kindergartners??? lol)Aidansmom792006-5-10 22:35:55

InactiveJust thought I’d update that we switched Sarah to her “big girl bed” this weekend- bypassed the whole toddler bed thing since she’s so tall. Anyhow, she loves it! She was so matter of fact when we took the crib apart. She said, “Daddy took my crib down. Bye bye crib.” That was it. I was the one with tears in my eyes!! She’s had a pretty good time adjusting- a few snags here and there getting used to blankets and bedrails, but otherwise a lot better for her. Funny though, she refuses to use the pillow!s&h’s mum2006-5-24 21:32:27
