InactiveWhen should I start weaning my 15 wk old baby from Zegerid? I know 9 mos for sure, but are there any other ages to try and see what happens? I thought once their sitting up you are supposed to try, but I can’t remember for sure.
Thank you, Shelby

InactiveSome have been lucky and been able to at 12 months some earlier but most around 2 years old. I think you will get a whole lot of different responses to this.

Keymasterwe were told/found that we could try after we realized that jonah didn’t need his dose increased w/ every weight gain-
for example- at 9months his dose hadn’t been increased for maybe a month (or so) & we ried to wean him off the prevacid, but it was a no-go…he remained on the same dose & we tried again at 12 months & it was sucessful (still needed zantac ‘as needed’)

InactiveHi Shelby,
I love the new picture of Justice. Cute.
With Myles I noticed that he quit throwing up (around 8.5 months) and I waited six more weeks and then began weaning him. He’s doing fine. With a refluxer who vomits you can probably use that as a gauge, but I imagine it would be more difficult with a silent refluxer. Probably letting them outgrow their dose would be the best way.
How’s Justice doing?

InactiveJustice is doing well. He is not sleeping as well as before, but I’m not sure if it is due to teething, reflux, or just normal baby stuff. I don’t really know what a normal baby is like. He is so happy so I truely feel blessed! I just wish I was getting more sleep, but I know there are other moms who are getting less than me so I am thankful. At least I’m not delirous (sp?) like I was with Luke my first refluxer.
Thanks Laura for the Dr. Sears link. Also aren’t you having another baby soon? If not you I know someone is. If it is you, when are you due?

InactiveI’m taking Aidan off his medicine when he turns one…I have known 3 people (my best friend and 2 cousins) who have little ones who had reflux WAY worse than Aidans and they came off at a year..

InactiveCongrats Laura. So, how is it going? Does this one have reflux too? By the way, do you know much about Reglan? Like why do so many peds recommend it?

Inactivei know im not laura but im awake and bored…
reglan is meant for DGE (delayed gastric emptying). unfortunately many
doctors dont know enough about how to treat reflux effectively and they
prescribe it-thinking it is “safer” than jumping to a PPI.PPI’s are actually much much safer than motility agents.
reglan crosses the blood brain barrier and can have many neurological
side effects. some babies experience twitching and seizures from
reglan.also, reglan does nothing to heal the esophogus-and that is the main
thing that many reflux babies need. PPI’s are much much safer and they help heal the esophogus.some babies with DGE might need a motility drug, but there are safer meds for that-you do not need to use reglan for DGE.

Keymasterthanks natalia
(I’m guessing that’s your name? I really love that name!)yes, what she said. lol!
reglan and zantac seem to be the first meds prescribed by peds, “Just Because.” It’s probably just what they were taught and that’s that. Jonah was even prescribed reglan in the nicu and they had DONE testing and they pretty much knew he didn’t have DGE. Personally, in retrospect, I think they gave it to him to cover their butts legally- he was having apnea episodes (stopped breathing) and rather than have a dead newborn on their hands, they figured the possible risks of reglan, and the help it MIGHT provide, sure outweighed the apnea episodes.
anyway, there’s a lot of bad hype about reglan, but it has worked wonders for some babies, with diagnosed/VERIFIED DGE, in small doses. as natalia wrote, there ARE other motility drugs out there such as bethanecol (sp?) and erythromyacin (sp?)…I feel that if a baby has been given the stomah emptying scan (this is not just an Upper GI- it’s a specific test looking for DGE) and doesn’t respond well to other drugs, then by all means trying reglan is worth it…
As for Ari: I truly feel he has mild mild reflux but, I also don’t know what a ‘normal’ baby is like, unfortunately…He winds up getting mylanta maybe once a day, if that. I guess you could say I’m ‘mylanta happy’ but I truly don’t think a ml here and there (no more than 2, total in a day) is going to harm him…It’s just that I hear him glerping (internal wet hiccup sound) and gasping and doing all the silent reflux stuff that Jonah did. However, when Jonah would exhibit any one of the syptoms I see Ari have, it would have set Jonah off howling /shrieking inconsolably for hours. With Ari, he lets out a yelp and cries for just a minute…BIG difference!
Ok, sorry for the interruption. Back to the regular programming

Inactivewhat does your ped gi say?

InactiveI personally don’t think there’s a magic age to start weaning or an age that they should be weaned at. Why do you think that you have to start weaning at 9 months? I would think it varies from baby to baby. I also don’t think it necessary to wean at a certain age just because other babies with worse reflux were weaned off the meds at that age. I would look at Justice’s symptoms, and when he seems to be doing well, and doesn’t seem that the reflux is an issue anymore, then I would talk to his doc about trying weaning. I say better to be a bit conservative then to wean prematurely and to have a problem. Glad to hear he’s a happy little guy.

InactiveI have been hopeing that Justice will outgrow this sooner than Luke did. My hope for posting this was that someone would say as soon your baby is sitting up they could outgrow it.
The truth is I need to just let go of all my expectitions and just let it be. I should have learned by now that it will happen when it happens. With my first son everyday I woke up thinking today will be the day. Bad idea!!!! Thank to everyone for their posts.

InactiveYeah, you don’t want to do that. I made myself nuts hoping against hope every day that Myles would stop throwing up. I guess acceptance really is half the battle.
