InactiveWe are not ready to try this yet, but I have no doubt that Ben’s pediatrician is going to suggest a medication weaning when he goes for his 9 mo. check up. From what I remember with Claire, we dropped one of her doses and then started lowering the remaining dose until we were down to basically nothing.
Here’s my question: What’s the best way to go about this? I’ve seen some people on here drop doses every couple of weeks while others quit cold turkey and still others just start lowering the amount of each dose.
If babies metabolize the meds. quickly (which I assume it’s a bit slower as they get older), wouldn’t it make the most sense to keep giving them 3 doses a day and just lower the amount of each one? However, I can see the benefits of only have 1 or 2 doses to give a day. It would be nice to not feel like I’m constantly syphoning something into his mouth!
Anyway, just wondered what you all thought, so I have some idea of what to do when his pediatrician starts discussing it.

InactiveDr Phillips said to absolutely never quit cold turkey. this WILL result in acid rebound even if the child has outgrown the reflux. i would keep the three doses and lower them all. then i would proceed to cut a dose out. etc.
even our doctors website, who is into natural medicine, says not to quit PPI’s cold turkey (this is an example of an adult patient that wants to try natural way to prevent heartburn)
I am taking PPIs (Proton Pump Inhibitors: i.e., Nexium® Prilosec®, Prevacid®, Protonics®, Aciphex®. etc.)
can I stop taking them and immediately substitute a Natural pharmaceutical?
NO! YOU MUST WEAN OFF THESE MEDICATIONS SLOWLY TO AVOID REBOUND HEARTBURN OR REFLUX. Even missing one day of your PPI may precipitously cause severe rebound. I recommend you start taking the Chewable Digestive Enzymes with Probiotics for a few days before you begin cutting back on your pharmaceuticals. After a few days take the pharmaceutical every other day, then every third day, etc. I recommend two Chewable Digestive Enzymes with Probiotics three times a day with meals. As you are slowly cutting back on your pharmaceuticals you may have to take as many as 10-12 Chewable Digestive Enzymes with Probiotics daily. Since there are no side effects to this natural treatment please don’t hesitate to take additional tablets as you need them.

InactiveI dropped down by 1/2 for about 2-3 weeks and then once I saw no increase in symptoms I stopped the rest. I think I would start by dropping one dose, maybe the middle one to start with? At least then you will be covered at night and presumable Ben is more upright during the day.

InactiveWe did the lowering of each dose first, then cut out the evening dose and then the morning dose…good luck!
